The Cross Slot Drill Down ® CROSS SLOT NORTH AMERICAN NEWS NOVEMBER 2012 Cross Slot – The World Leader in No-Till Technology Year Ahead Field Days 2013 We are planning to run field days in Alberta and North Dakota in the spring of 2013, likely to be late April/ early May. The Alberta field days will be held on Harvey Hollman’s property near Penhold and the North Dakota field days will be held at Kevin Larson’s Willow City farm. Additional information on venues and dates will be posted at a later stage, when we have had a chance to assess weather and ground conditions. Dust Bowl Story – Back from Exhaustion The recent PBS two part ‘Dust Bowl’ series is a poignant reminder of the risks associated with farming… No-Till Farmer magazine also commented on the series and asked the question “Could we see another Dust Bowl era in the US?” The dry conditions recently experienced in the South and Midwest states is also a good reminder how quickly mother nature can turn farm incomes from prosperity to poverty in a short period of time… It is worth re-iterating the key benefits of a true no-till farming practice and how these practices can help prevent further ‘dust bowl’ and erosion type scenarios. Dr John Baker recently wrote a note summarizing the key reason for scepticism about no-tillage is that very few people in North America are actually doing true no-tillage. The following captures some of the key points raised in the note. “Many believed that the main objective of notillage was to stop plowing. But stopping plowing is not nearly enough. It needs to be accompanied by a reduction in all forms of physical soil disturbance and the retention of crop residues so that they cover as much as possible of the soil surface.” “What is now needed is low-disturbance notillage, which does not have the downsides of either disc or tined openers. And it can be done, with openers that cause the minimal soil and residue disturbance that most disc openers are capable of, as well as all of the beneficial functions (such as double shooting and no ‘hairpinning’) of tined openers. Such openers do exist and their biological results have almost invariably been superior to both existing disc openers and existing tined openers (and certainly than conventional tillage). They focus on being biologically-friendly, which in the end is what maximises crop yields and sustainability and at the same time minimises soil erosion. It’s a classic “win-win”. Cross Slot does this. For a copy of the original note, please email me at [email protected]. Back From Exhaustion Video youtube link: http://youtu.be/Rpv9SwbJ-DU Red Deer Trade Show We attended the Red Deer Ag Show in early November. We teamed up with a group of other Australian (Agrowplow, Northstar Livestock Handling) and New Zealand (Gallagher, PGG Seeds, Rotowiper Weed Wipers, Kinghitter post drivers) companies and technologies on an outdoor site with 6,000 square feet. The show organizers promoted us as an Australasian feature. Unfortunately the weather conspired against us dumping several inches of snow and providing subzero temperatures during the 4 day event. Believe me it is no fun marketing outdoors in these conditions even with the luxury of a tent and heating. (See photos below). That aside we will be back next year and will continue with the joint site. Congratulations to Ray Schneider for winning the Cross Slot jacket from our draw at the Red Deer Trade Show. 2013 Tradeshows We will be attending and exhibiting at a number of trade shows over the winter months of 2013, see below: 8–10 January Manitoba-North Dakota ZeroTillage Farmers Association 23–25 January Minot Ag Expo, 5–7 February 12–13 February 17–19 March Workshop & Tradeshow Ramkota Hotel, Bismarck, ND North Dakota State Fair Grounds, Minot, ND A new 45 foot machine will be displayed outdoors Spokane Ag Expo Spokane WA Agri International Tradeshow Bismarck Civic Centre Bismarck ND Smoky River Agriculture Tradeshow Falher Regional Rec Center, Falher, AB A 40 foot Cross Slot will be displayed outdoors Know the Difference” Slot or No-Till it, s s o r C e s u n “You ca Cross Slot NO-TILLAGE SYSTEMS ® Intelligent Farmers” nt Farming for e g i l l e t n I “ Cross Slot Mud Scrapers – Rotoscraper Cross Slot is working with Mark Devloo, Somerset Manitoba on developing a mud scraper suitable for Cross Slot packer wheels including both ribbed and flat packers. Mark is the founder of Devloo Roto Mud Scrapers. The development work to date is very promising and this option is targeted to be available for spring seeding in 2013. The seeding was done using Kevin’s Cross Slot drill and focused on measured fertilizer applications. A brief summary of the results is as follows: Trial 1 N applied at seeding was 74 lbs/a, soils tests showed that residual in-ground N was 40lbs/a. The total range of N across 7 test plots went from 114lbs/a to 234lbs/a. Spring applications of N with UAN and streamer tips varied from 0lbs/a to 120lbs/a. In two plots Agrotain (a nitrogen stabilizer) was also used. Yields ranged from 83.4 bu/a (total N 114lbs) to 90.2 bu/a (total N 234lbs/a). Trial 2 N applied at seeding was 45 lbs/a, Harvey Hollman, Penhold, Alberta Farmer & Custom Seeder Harvey seeded approximately 3,000 acres last spring using his new 30 foot, 10 inch spacing Cross Slot drill. He seeded alfalfa at 10lbs per acre 1/2” deep and applied 3 gals per acre of liquid fertilizer. He was able to take off just over two tons per acre of dry feed. This was on two fields approximately 8 miles apart, both were seeded at the end of June and cut the second week of September. One field was silage stubble and the other was canola stubble worked once the fall before. Contact Harvey on 403 588 3913 or email him at [email protected]. soils tests showed that residual in-ground N was 40lbs/a. The total range of N across 10 test plots went from 85lbs/a - 235lbs/a. Spring applications of N with UAN and streamer tips varied from 0lbs/a - 150lbs/a. Agrotain was used on two plots. Yields ranged from 77.2 bu/a (total N 114lbs) to 89.3 bu/a (total N 234lbs/a). Trial 3 N applied at seeding was 17 lbs/a, soils tests showed that residual in-ground N was 40lbs/a. The total range of N across 12 test plots went from 57lbs/a to 297lbs/a. Spring applications of N with UAN and streamer tips varied from 0lbs/a to 240lbs/a. Agrotain was used on two plots. Yields ranged from 76.1 bu/a (total N 114lbs) to 83.7 bu/a (total N 234lbs/a). The highest yield of 90.2 bu/a came from a total N of 234 lbs with a 74lb application at seeding and a spring application of 120lbs. The lowest yield of 76.1 bu/a came in with a 17lb application at seeding and no further applications. Where Agrotain was used, the yields all came in at the middle of the trial ranges.
