Agawa Canyon
September 28 - October 7, 2017
This favorite Fall tour also features scenic Sault Ste Marie, Mackinac Island, Chicago & more!
Day 1
Des Moines, IA
Agawa Canyon has been one of our favorite fall destinations for years and this year’s tour combines great,
classic attractions and Mother Nature’s charm.
Day 2 CB, L, D
La Crosse, WI
Today, we will explore the home of the Mayos, the
founders of this world-renowned hospital. Mayowood,
a comfortably elegant residence, was home to three
generations of the Mayo family, and is surrounded by
spacious grounds and beautiful gardens. A filling, Dutch
style lunch is followed by driving past the Mayo Clinic,
which has been advancing medicine for over a hundred
years. Then, take an afternoon cruise on the Mississippi
to view gorgeous foliage from the river. Enjoy dinner at
an upscale steakhouse in La Crosse.
Day 6 CB, L
St. Ignace, MI
The Mackinaw City Ferry transports us back in time
as we travel to Mackinac Island. No automobiles are
allowed on the island, so a horse-drawn taxi takes us
through the charming island to our lunch at the Grand
Hotel, with its 700-foot long veranda.
Day 7 CB
Day 3 CB, L
Wausau, WI
Start off with a stop at Pickwick Mill one of the oldest
water powered gristmills in the country. Next, we will
have a chance to purchase some Wisconsin cheese
at Humbird Cheese. Today we’ll eat lunch among the
cobblestone-like walkways and 18th century street lamps
of Burnstad’s European Village in Tomah. Later, learn
about the #1 selling fruit crop of Wisconsin at Glacial
Lake Cranberries. This is a great time for a dessert of
cranberry ice cream or pie!
Day 4 CB, D
Sault Ste Marie, MI
The scenic North Woods and majestic white pines are
some of the natural wonders of Wisconsin that capture
our attention as we travel to our next destination. This
evening you will enjoy a leisurely cruise on
the St Mary’s River with dinner and experience
“locking through the Soo Locks.”
Day 5 CB, L
Sault Ste Marie, MI
Witness the jagged beauty of Agawa Canyon
as we travel by train along pristine northern lakes
and rivers and awesome granite rock formations. We pass through the rugged wilderness
to the floor of the canyon and enjoy a peaceful
lunch on board.
South Bend, IN
The history of transportation in America is on display
at the Studebaker National Museum. See vehicles
from the Studebaker’s Conestoga wagon to the last
Studebaker, a Bordeaux red 1964 Daytona two-door
hardtop.
Day 8 CB
Chicago, IL
Chicago, known for its excitement, high fashion, architecture, museums and art galleries, is at our beck and
call today. Our city tour this morning exposes us to
impressive sights such as the beautiful Michigan lakefront, the Chicago River and the spectacular downtown
skyline. We soar upward in the world’s fastest elevator
this morning to the top of Sears Tower (now officially,
Willis Tower), 103 stories tall, where the panoramic view
of Chicago and Lake Michigan surrounds us.
Day 9 CB
St. Louis, MO
As we head to Missouri we visit Springfield, Illinois,
home of Abraham Lincoln. Meticulously restored in
1988 and surrounded by a four-block historic site that
includes homes of his neighbors, this is indeed a page
out of history.
Day 10 CB, L
Home
On our way home we enjoy the memories of our travels,
from the resplendent fall foliage to the adventures of the
big city and the richness of the historic Midwest.
