SPECIAL UPCOMING CME EVENTS
Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital:
October 13 and 14, 2016 - Independent Practitioner Certification Scanning sessions: We will be offering two
four-hour scanning sessions on each of these days for those who wish to obtain scans towards CORE Independent
Practitioner status with the Canadian Emergency Ultrasound Society (www.ceus.ca). There will be many instructors,
ultrasound machines and models per session. Participants should expect to obtain up to 15 scans per area per
session towards certification. Pre-requisite is a CEUS approved introductory ultrasound course
(http://www.ceus.ca/ceus-certifications/course-offerings/). Cost for each session is $800 or $3200 for all 4
sessions. Completing your Independent Practitioner certification with CEUS (done all scans plus doing examination
series) qualifies for 25 RCPSC Section 3 OR 25 CCFP Mainpro C credits. These sessions count towards this goal.
October 15th - Internal Medicine / hospital medicine Introductory Ultrasound Course (through EDE 1 and
EDE 2). This course is designed for internists and hospitalists doing inpatient PoCUS. Course will teach basic
cardiac PoCUS for gross LV function, chamber dilation and pericardial effusion, thoracic PoCUS for pneumothorax,
pleural effusion, pneumonia, and pulmonary edema, abdominal PoCUS for ascites, IVC PoCUS for volume status and
procedural PoCUS for central line insertion, thoracentesis and paracentesis. Cost for this course is $1600 for
staff and $1200 for residents. 10 RCPSC Section 1 OR 10 CCFP Mainpro C credits.

October 16th - Scanning sessions for internal medicine / hospital medicine - Offering two, four-hour sessions
to gain further experience in PoCUS for internal medicine / hospital medicine in the indications taught at the above
introductory course. Pre-requisite is a prior intro course in these indications. Cost for each session is $800. Each
4 hour session qualifies for 4 RCPSC Section 1 credits OR 4 Mainpro C credits.
