CF knife edge seal flanges are compatible with those made by most other manufacturers based on the Conflat® range of
flanges. Our part numbers are based on the metric dimensions - Fxxx(OD in mm)- xxx(ID in mm). For example, 2.75 inch

Load-Lock doors mount to existing CF flanges on chamber with TAPPED mounting holes. The bolt must be inserted from the chamber
side, or studs can be used with nuts on the chamber side of the mounting flange. The door seals to the outer surface of the CF flange
with a Viton® O-ring in a groove on the door. The door opening (B) is the standard bore of the CF flange. For load-Lock doors with
windows, the window material is 7056 glass and is fitted into the door using conventional thin metal to glass bonding technology. Full
view of the respective size CF flange bore is maintained.

Pressure Burst Disc
Burst Discs have been used as a safety device to protect
vacuum systems against back fill over-pressure. They can
be used on any type of system where over-pressurization is
undesirable.
When over-pressure occurs, the thin diaphragm comes in
contact with the sharp edges of the housing and ruptures,
relieving the pressure in the system. Once ruptured, the unit
must be discarded and replaced.
The disc is designed to burst at a positive pressure
anywhere in the range from about 15 psig to 25 psig, with
rupture certain to occur before 25 psig.

W ide Range of Valve Types
Valves are required to control all UHV systems. They come in many different shapes and sizes, with a variety of specifications,
but all adhere to the basic principle of being able to make and break a leak tight seal many times.
There are several different types of material used to make the seal. The variances of materials used give the valves different
operational properties.
At Vacuum Generators we produce a wide variety of valves that can be broadly broken down into two different types.
All M etal Valves
These valve types use the plastic deformation of a softer metal pad by a harder metal seat, to make the seal.
and Elastomer Valves
This second type of valve uses the elastic properties of a range of elastomers (such as Viton or Chemraz) to make the seal.
The different materials used to make the leak-tight seal give the valve types different properties; such as leak Rate, bakeout
temperatures, valve lifetime, etc... When choosing a valve you need to take a number of things into account to achieve the best
price versus performance.
Both the All Metal and Elastomer valves are divided into smaller sub-sections. These differ from one another by features such as
shape, size, construction, and closure methods.
Quality and Longevity of the All M etal Valve Range.
The All Metal valve uses an accurately machined stainless steel knife edge to cut into a specially designed copper pad. The first
time that this seal is made, a high force is required to cut a groove into the copper pad. Subsequent closures then require less
sealing force as the seal is made by using the elastic deformation of the copper pad as it enters the groove cut into the seat.
Index marks on the outside of the valve indicate this sealing position clearly, so it can be repeated many times. This elastic
deformation and seal is infinitely achievable in theory. Work hardening of the copper surfaces, changes in the copper pad
structure due to bakeout, damage to the sealing surfaces, contamination, and uneven closure torques do in fact limit the seal
lifetime. With these limitations in mind, our valves have been designed so that it is possible for the user to service them. We
provide a wide range of repair kits, replacement pads, movement assemblies etc. Where a valve is beyond customer repair, it is
possible to have them factory serviced. We still repair valves that are over 25 years old! A fact that demonstrates the quality and
longevity of Vacuum Generators products.
Leak Valves
A superb leak valve providing excellent control and stability with precise leak rates. Minimum dead spaces allows the valve to be
used with efficient time, saving control in gas introduction systems. Different port configurations enable this valve to be used on
any existing system.

Ion Gauge Heads Range (VIG Series)
We have two ranges of gauge heads the VIG17 and the VIG22.
The VIG22 Series
The VIG22 series of heads (VIG22 and VIG24) use the some construction; they only differ by filament materials used. The
construction of the gauge features a ceramic feedthrough base with a highly insulated collector pin (remember that you are trying
to measure very low currents), the grid is made from very thin Molybdenum. It is made to be as large as possible (to maximise
the area of possible electron to molecule collisions) but also to have a very small surface area (to minimise the chance of
electrons colliding with and being collected by the grid). This design ensures that the electrons stay out in the field as long as
possible before being collected. The Collector wire is made from very thin Tungsten to minimise the risk of x-ray formation whilst
still allowing the collection of +ve ions.
The VIG17 Series
The VIG17 series of heads (VIG17 and VIG18) have the same construction as the VIG22 series. Again a ceramic feedthrough
base is used but with an even more highly insulated collector pin than the 22 series (remember you are trying to measure even
lower currents here). The grid is made from very thin Molybdenum and is made to be as large as possible (to maximise area of
possible electron/ molecule collision area) but also to have an even smaller surface area than the 22 series (to minimise the
chance of electrons being collected by the grid). The grid also has a top and bottom which ensures that the field produced is as
uniform as possible (no end effects). The Collector wire is even thinner Tungsten to further minimise the risk of x-ray formation
whilst still allowing the collection of +ve ions.

This range of gas baffle shutters has been specifically designed for deposition applications where protection of
viewports from coating by evaporants or against process gases is im portant. The shutters are m ounted on doublesided flanges and fit between the viewport and the cham ber flange; they are available for viewports in the size range
DN35 to DN150 (2¾ inch to 8 inch OD flanges)
The gas baffle shutters in sizes DN64 to DN150 incorporate a labyrinth design of shielding around the edge of the
shutter flap creating an enclosed design that prevents gas reaching the viewport. This type of shutter significantly
reduces coating of viewports and RHEED screens in system using cracker cells or in CBE. The DN35 shutter is a
basic flap design.
Gas Baffle shutters feature a m agnetic coupling for the actuator; this elim inates the risks of leaks associated with
bellows-sealed actuators and greatly enhances the vacuum integrity and reliability of the device. The external m agnet
assem bly need not be rem oved for bakeout up to 250EC; higher bakeout tem peratures can be achieved with the
external m agnets rem oved since m agnets are not em ployed within the vacuum envelope.
The flap design of the shutter provides a clear and unobstructed view into the vacuum cham ber. The linear m otion
actuator m inim ises the num ber of m oving parts and this, com bined with a design that reduces the risk of seizure
caused by deposited m aterials, provides m axim um reliability. A locking screw perm its the shutter to be locked into
any position.

High Precision Leak Valves

Excellent stability and precision control
The motorised version of the LVM precision leak valve opens up a range of
possibilities for system pressure control. The motor and gearbox arrangement gives extremely precise adjustment; this allows
sophisticated control of system pressure or gas mixing when used in conjunction with suitable pressure measurement and control
electronics. The motorised version of the valve should provide much finer resolution of pressure control than that indicated by the
typical performance curves for the manual version of the LVM that are given on page 109 of the main 2002 catalogue.
The motorised valve is supplied with the stepper motor and gearbox fitted; open and closed limit switches are also provided.
When used for automated pressure control, it is recommended that an additional shut-off valve is fitted in the inlet system to
allow complete isolation of the gas inlet from the vacuum chamber.
The valve is suitable for both open loop and closed loop control situations. For open loop control a suitable stepper motor
controller is required. Closed loop control requires the integration of a pressure measurement gauge controller (typically an
ionisation gauge ) and a pressure controller. VG Scienta have designed, tested and entirely recommend the combination of the
ZIGC3 ionisation gauge controller and the ZLVMPFC pressure flow controller to be used in conjunction with the motorised LVM
valve.

The PRP series of angle valves employ a novel, patented, seat seal arrangement which allows repeated operation and bakeout at high
temperature (up to 230EC) without the associated risk of the seat seal O-ring sticking. The complete valve including the pneumatic actuator and
limit switch assembly is fully bakeable without dismantling.
These valves are ideal for applications where a fully bakeable automatic shut off valve is required.
Examples include loadlock pumping on UHV systems, differential pumping lines for electron and
ion guns, and deposition systems where the valve can be operated hot (heater tape or bakeout
jacket) to minimise process gas or by-product condensation.
The pneumatic cylinder is single acting and requires a maximum inlet pressure of 4bar to operate
the valve. The cylinder assembly incorporates open and closed limit switches as standard; a
visual position indicator is also provided. The complete actuator mechanism is demountable and
can be removed and replaced with the valve body remaining bolted to the vacuum system.

Supplied with a plain (un-graduated) handwheel which includes a position lock. This handwheel has a vee
groove for easy motorisation with an offset motor.
RD6L Extended Life
The RD6 is an extended life version of the standard RD6 drive. A modified mechanical arrangement results in approximately 10 times the cycle
life (30 million revolutions) compared to the standard unit.
RD7
As RD6 above, except the rotational shaft is longer (256mm instead of 100mm) and the handwheel has 1.0º graduations. Special versions of the
RD7 have incorporated items such as extended bearing housings to support longer shaft lengths.

Three options are available giving Z translation of 150, 300 and 500mm. The X-Y translation
system gives precision motion of up to ±25mm (vector sum). Note that the X-Y travel is limited
by the probe diameter
The Centiax is particularly suitable for use with devices such as high power cryostats and
custom-designed sample holders.

Construction
The Centiax is of modular construction which supports a range of travel options. The Z-module uses three simultaneously-driven
lead screws to provide stable parallel motion.
In the basic manual version the Z-motion is applied via a hexagonal drive nut, giving a linear motion of 4mm per revolution. The
use of the optional hand wheel drive gives a linear motion of 0.4mm per revolution of the handwheel. Use of the stepper motor Zdrive allows much smaller incremental motions.
The XY stage uses high quality cross roller bearings that allow smooth operation under the highest load conditions.

Conventional Wobble sticks (Series WS20).
A very simple version of the wobble stick consisting of a single edge w elded bellows w hich is mounted on
the atmosphere side of the mounting flange. This allow s movement in all planes, both in and out, and
angular. A single shaft running through the bellow s has a handle on the atmosphere side and an M 3 tapped
hole in the vacuum system.
WS20 has 20mm linear travel and 15° (±7.5°)
angular movement. It is bakeable to 450°C.
Universal Wobble sticks (New Series WS)
The next range uses 2 sizes of edge w elded bellow s and incorporates a stiffer
actuating shaft for increased rigidity. A large bellow s allow s for shaft angular
movement in and out of the vacuum system. The longer the travel, the more bellows
are required. A ball and socket allow s angular movement.
The shaft has a 5mm diameter x 8.0mm deep hole in the end. This has 2 x M 3 locking
grub screw s and is designed to take items such as the ESCA sample transfer forks
(W STPS and W STPL).

Coaxial Pincer Grip Wobble sticks (New Series WS-PG)
Three different sizes of edge w elded bellow s are used. A large single bellow s allow s for shaft angular
movement; smaller bellow s allows for shaft movement in and out of the vacuum system; and a third
miniature bellow s allow s pincer movement. The longer the travel, the greater the number of bellow s required.
A spring loaded button on the operating handle actuates the moving jaw part of the pincer. There is a second
spring incorporated under the moving jaw to provide clamping force. The jaw opens from fully closed to
about 1.6mm fully opened, handling samples up to 1.5mm thick.
The complete jaw assembly is also set on a rotating (detent) assembly. This can be rotated (relative to the
linear movement axis) to one of 4 preset 90° positions by nudging it on a convenient point inside the
chamber. W ith a little bit of practice rotation is easily achieved. If this form of rotation is envisaged, a pin
should be mounted inside the vacuum chamber to allow the w obble stick to be pressed against it. The pincer
jaw capacity allow s a 14mm diameter sample of maximum thickness 1.5mm to be handled.

The new range of Hollow W obble Sticks is based on the existing
Universal W S series, so all angular and linear m ovem ents rem ain the
sam e. However, the additional benefit of the Hollow W obble Stick is
that it has a 3.6m m diam eter hole through the centre of the wobble
shaft. This allows a range of sm all tools or im plem ents, e.g. vacuum screw-drivers, to be introduced directly into the

Strong m agnetic coupling is assured by the use of rare earth m agnetics arranged so as to provide m axim um coupling
strength. The external m agnet arrangem ent is rem ovable for system bakeout ensuring that the m agnetic strength is
not degraded during the bake; perm anent m agnets are not used inside the vacuum envelope of the wobble stick.

The new range of Magnetic Linear and Rotary Drives has been designed for applications where a greater degree of
accuracy and repeatability is required in sam ple transfer, either between vacuum cham bers, or when transferring
from one m anipulation device to another.
The device uses a m agnetic coupling to actuate the linear and rotary m otions. Unlike the MLRM transfer probe, the
MLRD device has an independent shaft for the rotary m otion. This, together with the bearing arrangem ent, gives
precise, concentric, 360EC continuous rotation of the secondary (inner) shaft, even when the MLRD device is fully
extended.
