Spring flings and history things
Local historian and artist Steve Stark recently gave an art presentation about Smith Stimmel, who served
as a bodyguard to President Lincoln. History unfolds before your eyes as he draws historic moments and
people in charcoal and shares the stories behind it all. Above left: Steve Stark and resident Don Johnson
visit after the program. Above right: Steve gives resident and friend Cec Ellis a hug, making sure not to
get any charcoal on her.

Out and about
On a recent bus tour, Ronald
Ramsey, History of Architecture
professor at North Dakota State
University, dove deep into the
history of local homes, churches,
and buildings. Resident Ray
Green and Karen Stoker, who is a
Touchmark volunteer and the owner
of the HoDo, surprised the group
with a ukulele duet as the group
stopped for treats at the Hotel
Donaldson.

“I love my job! It is my social outlet. I enjoy the work I can do at the front desk and
chatting with my friends, the residents, who are the finest. I have been in the workforce
for 50 years, and Touchmark is the greatest working team I have ever worked with …
always ready to help, always ready with a smile.”

Unleash the power of
aging—and celebrate
“The flower, the sky, your
beloved, can only be found in
the present moment.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist
monk, teacher, author, poet, and
peace activist
“Unleash the power of
aging” is the theme for Older
Americans Month, which is
May 2013. I could not help but
do a happy dance when I first
read this theme and realized
how much it represents the
programs and services of
Touchmark across the USA
and in Canada.
In every community, we
celebrate the power, wisdom,
life experience, and joy that
Touchmark residents bring to
their community and to all of
us who have the privilege to
work with them and support
their dreams and goals for this
new chapter in a life well lived.
May is a month of
celebrations: Mother’s Day,
Memorial Day, graduations
for children, grandchildren,
and even some Touchmark
residents, to name a
few. While some of these
celebrations may seem to
center around younger
adults during this month, we
focus on the celebrations of
residents, team members,
and the community at large.
There are plans for proms,
trips, festivals, weddings—and
much more! Please check out
our Event Highlights in this
issue for just a sampling of
these celebrations and then
look over the complete Full
Life calendar. There’s lots to
celebrate!
To be part of the planning and
celebrating, contact AnneMarie Fitz, Life Enrichment/
Wellness director, for
opportunities to share your
talents, strengths, and skills
with the Touchmark team.
You’ll find individual and
group celebrations, and all
celebrate the diversity among
residents, families, and team
members.
