In our classroom, we are learning about using reasoning strategies and fact families to solve math
problems, with help from the PBS KIDS® series Odd Squad.
Fill a grab bag for fact-family fun:
Gather a collection of 10–20 small, common objects (such
as coins, blocks, balls). To help children understand how
to use fact families to solve math problems, follow these
steps:
•Ask your child to count the items and put them in a bag.
•Next have your child grab several items out of the bag and
count them.
•Then, help your child use fact families to figure out how
many objects are left in the bag:
• Say: “You put [10] items in the bag and grabbed [3]
items out of the bag.” On a piece of paper, write the
equation 3 + ___ = 10.

Help your child learn more about
using fact families to solve math
problems in fun and easy ways at
home. To help your child learn and
use new words, repeat these words
often as you talk about and explore
these mathematical practices:
•rearrange
•fact families
(a set of related math facts such
as 5 + 3 = 8 and 8 – 5 = 3)
• Then say: “We can rearrange these same numbers to make a subtraction equation to figure out the
answer.” Write: 10 – 3 = ___.
• Help your child solve the subtraction equation to figure out how many items are left in the bag.
• Check to see if the answer is correct by counting the items left in the bag.
Repeat this activity often over the next few days or weeks to help your child develop understanding of how
to use fact families to solve math problems.
Play an online game together:

As you play Catch the Centigurps, prompt your child to use the fact family strategy to figure out how
many more centigurps he or she needs to reach each gift.
