Read the following passage and answer the given questions: (53=15)
News becomes rapidly obsolete. Sometimes people walk mile or two to get
the latest edition of newspaper, but would not bother to buy yesterday's
newspaper even if it is easily available. Why is a report of an earthquake in
this morning's newspaper important and newsy? But the same piece of news
two days later is no longer topical. It is now history clarifying the difference
between news and history not only elucidates how news becomes
superannuated, but also helps explain why we are attracted to the news in the
first place. A number of differences between news and history are apparent.
History, for one thing, is only about people or events that directly impinge
of the lives of people; the movements of the earliest ice glaciers belong more
to the study of geology than history. In addition, some insist that historical
accounts include inferences to peoples' intentions and reasons in addition to
their behavior. While news too is primarily concerned with the actions of the
people, motives are often immaterial to news story.
In fact, news need not concern people at all: its news when a hen in Nebraska
lays three purple eggs even if this occurrence has no significant consequence
for anyone. News, we noted, is nominal, but history ranges over series of
events. In addition, historical recital associates events in a narrative style
which differs markedly from news reports. Historical facts never speak for
themselves for they need to be embedded in some historical context. History
is not simply chronicle, not simply a matter of accurately ordering events.
History is about the past while single news deals with the present.

Read the passage and answer the questions.
(5×3= 15)
Devotion to ancestors is one of the key percepts that enables us to understand
the basis of Nepali Hindu social organization. According to the Nepali
definition of a family, the family is not only the abode of the living but also
of the dead, and those who are to come in the future; or in the other words
the home is the dwelling place of not only the living members but also of
forefathers who have passed away and those who are yet to come. A man,
thus, has a special obligation to his ancestors. So when the father or the
mother passes away a Nepali Hindu mourns the death by wearing white
garments, and abstaining from meat and liquor for a whole year. He also
offers rice-cakes, fruits and flowers to the departed throughout the year. Then

after the completion of the year he assumes a normal life. Even while leading
a normal life he has to make offerings to his ancestors twice a year; once
during the death anniversary and the other during the swara sarad, which
falls in the month of September-October. On both these occasions one offers
food and water to the deceased souls in the family. The offering during the
Shraddha Ceremony is for the pitris; and is known as the pitri-yasna. The
pirti-yajna constitutes one of the five great sacrifices that a house holder
performs in his life. The other yajnas being: deva-yajna, buta-yajna, niriyajna, and rishi-yajna that is the sacrifices to the gods, spirits, guests and

Read the passage and answer the questions given below.
(5×3= 15)
A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising
the pups and set about nailing it to a post on his yard. As he was driving the
last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the
eyes of a little boy. “Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”
“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck,
“These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.” The
boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he
pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. “I’ve got thirtynine cents. Is that enough to take a look?” “Sure,” said the farmer. And with
that he let out a whistle, “Here, Dolly!” he called.
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little
balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His
eyes danced with delight.
As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something
else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this one
noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward
manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch
up. “I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer
knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He
will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”
With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and
began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace
running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
(5×3=15)
Hiking - most of us remember our first overnight hike at summer camp or a
campout with friends- the experience meant walking, blisters, swimming in
a cool stream, cooking food that tasted better than any 5-star hotel, and then
sleeping in absolute silence under a blanket of stars .memories bring back
strange sounds in the night, leaving the camp to find a “private” place, telling
ghost stories by firelight, and making friends with people you hardly knew.
This month, we share a primer on hiking and backpacking so that you may
consider adding it to your list of activities. Just to whet your interest, you
may be surprised to know a person weighing 135 pounds, hiking with a 20pound backpack for 4 hours at 3 and half mph will expend 1,358 calories,
while a person weighing 150 pounds, carrying the same backpack for 4 hours
at 2mph, will burn 1,200 calories.
The American Hiking Society lists many benefits to hiking. They state that
hiking can stem heart disease, decrease hypertension by dilating blood
vessels, decrease cholesterol levels while increasing HDL(the good
cholesterol), decrease weight by burning calories, etc.
We need to be very careful before we go for hiking. There’s no perfect list
as different trips require different equipment and gear. If you have diabetes,
essentials for any hike would include extra clothing, food and water.
Depending on the hike, you may carry a map in a water proof container,
compass, flash light with extra batteries, matches in a water-tight case, etc.
thus hiking is a terrific exercise.

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. (15)
It's 10:35 a.m. and there are 389 media people in Belfast, most, it would
seem, in Europa Hotel, and all are looking for a war.
For the first time 12 years of covering the world's conflicts and especially
the trouble in Northern Ireland, I have been forced to question seriously the
objectivity of some of my colleagues. There have been reports of
photographers paying youth to throw rocks and bottles at passing army
vehicles. One US TV crew is said to have such an incident filmed. In the
lowers Falls a TV crew were seen by police inciting rioters to do damage on
a building site, and in another incident a TV crew was seen directing rioters
to create action which was then filmed. The very presence of the
photographers and TV crews on street corners in Belfast seems to include
youths to throw things at passing security vehicles. Last said I didn't want
them to do anything, I was informed that some foreign journalists always
paid him. This was substantiated by colleagues, many of whom received
similar approaches.
