MOUNT CARMEL
CATHOLIC COLLEGE FOR GIRLS
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Carers
Students in years 10 and 11 are preparing for the Spring term GCSE
Examinations. We are again reminded, that as a community we need to work
together as Governors, parents and teachers in supporting students to reach
their full potential and achieve the examination results they deserve.
Encouraging
Positive
Affirmations
As we come to the end of this term it is a good opportunity for us to reflect on
the many successes we have enjoyed. The building continues to take shape.
The main teaching block has been completely refurbished and for the first
time we have all the Science facilities on one floor. Work is progressing on the
other phases and our contractors are confident that the whole project will be
complete in the summer 2013.
At the end of the term we say farewell to Ms Walsh and Ms Murdock. They
are both moving on to new challenges. We would like to say a very big thank
you for the work they have done in their time at the College. We would also
like to say farewell to Mr Holmes, Mr Miah and Ms Fekete-Toth and thank
them for the contribution they have made to the college.
I have no doubt that 2013 will present many challenges but I am confident
that we will be able to rise to each challenge.
Students return to college on Monday 7th January at 8.40am
Yours Sincerely
Supporting
Wellbeing &
Awareness
On behalf of the Governors and staff I would like to wish you all a very happy
and peaceful Christmas and I look forward to the New Year.

a speed networking session where
students met engineers, bakers, medics etc. and a
careers match computer task.”
Here are some student comments about the days event;
“it was fun, helpful and I really enjoyed myself.”
“I enjoyed listening to the professionals explaining how they got
there and why they like their job.”
“it has encouraged me to take Science to another level.”
“it was helpful because I learnt a lot about what I want to do in
the future.”
“the visit opened my mind up and showed me that there are
other things in life. It influenced me a lot.”
“I liked the part where we found out what Science job suited us
the best.”
“it was very interesting and I would like to do it again.”

PUFFIN LIVE
EVENT
The following students attended the
prestigious Michelle Paver Puffin
Virtually Live Event (a live interactive
webcast). Michelle Paver shared
details about her new book series Gods & Warriors. Students were part of the live theatre audience
and the event was streamed live online via www.puffinvirtuallylive.co.uk for a global audience to
watch. The students had great
fun asking Michelle lots of
questions. Signed copies of
Gods and Warriors available in
the LRC.
ARCHWAY LIBRARY LINK
At Mount Carmel we want to encourage students to read
more by making reading fun and pleasurable. Reading for
pleasure promotes self confidence and self awareness. To
ensure quality assurance throughout the BSF and to continue
to promote the cross curricular literacy drive, all Yr 7 students
visit Archway library once a month during English lessons.
There is also a temporary library space in BS1 where students
can work in a safe and stimulating environment. The temporary library space currently has a book stock of 1500 fiction
titles inclusive of all genres with at least 10 new titles added
on a weekly basis. Eclipse.net is the new library resource programme used at the college. It is fun and user friendly and a
great resource for students to log and track their reading history. Eclipse.net can also recommend what students may like
to read based on the data stored on their personal profile.

STUDENT BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET BY BRIAN SELNICK
“I have read this book lots of times. My favourite character is Hugo because he is so
sneaky. My favourite bit in the book is when Hugo finds out the truth about the old
man and his father. The illustrations make the story more interesting and bring the
whole thing to life.” Katie Hughes 7EB
GODS AND WARRIORS BY MICHELLE PAVER
“Interesting blend of mystery, history and myths. Once you start reading you just
can’t put this hardback down! You’ll grow to love the realistic relationships between
the most opposite of characters. I recommend you read this gorgeous book and
discover the tales of Hylas, Pirra, Spirit and a whole range of others!” Ellie Bailey 9EB
PEGASUS BY KATE O’HEARNE
“This fantastic trilogy authored by the very talented Kate O’Hearn brings heart
warming, hair raising and on occasion tear jerking moments throughout its chapters.
The collision of Roman myths and the modern adventure creates such a novel that is
almost impossible to put down. Recommended for anyone craving adventure, romance, angst , family drama and of course Pegasus!” Megan Jones 9AF
SPY GIRL—OUT OF SHADOWS BY CAROL HODGES
“I loved reading this book because its adventurous and I love adventure stories. I
really liked the different characters especially Suki Smith, McGregor, Assio and
Jazmin. My favourite part of the book was the secret spy mission. Read this book
because its fun and you can find out if the secret spy mission was successful or not.”
Drew Bannerman 9AF
THE WORST THING ABOUT MY SISTER —JACQUELINE WILSON
“This is a story about two sisters, Mary and Melissa and they fight a lot. Marty is a
tomboy and Melissa is a girly girl. One day an incident happens which is a matter of
life and death. What I like about this book is how they cope together. I can relate it
to my life when I fight with my sister. This book has helped me to be more friendly
towards my sister. I highly recommend this book and I give it 10 out of 10.”

ENTERPRISE
Mount Carmel raised £250 at the
enterprise activity event 'Bring the Outdoors in' during Global
Entrepreneurship Week in aid of Youngminds.
http://www.youngminds.org.uk is the UK's leading charity
committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental
health of children and young people in schools and sharing the
message ‘NO HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH’
The activity challenged students to envisage and create a design
template that represents ‘bringing the outdoors in’.
Student designs were outstanding and Bernie Yates, Head of Widening
Participation at Central St Martins was extremely
impressed with the innovative design ideas presented at a Dragons
Den style event. The winning designs were printed onto tea towels,
aprons and bags and sold during Global Entrepreneurship
Week 12th – 16th November.
Antonia Campione, Cansel Gok, Lucy Ntalani Mahilu, Natasha
Gallo, Jamie Leigh Stone, Maurissa Gyamfi, Georgia Ryan and
Angelika Wroblewska were chosen as finalists and spent a day
with Ms Arbuckle and print tutors in the professional Print
workshop at Saint Martins, transferring the designs onto
fabric. Large silk screens were used for this process and
approximately one hundred tea towels, bags and aprons were
printed. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day. For the second
time Mount Carmel has been awarded the prestigious High
Impact award 2012 for this activity. The first time it was awarded in 2010 for the ‘THINK IT, BELIEVE IT, DO IT—
HENNA HANDS EVENT’. http://www.gew.org.
Staff at Mount Carmel strive to instil the message that Enterprise across the curriculum is a powerful tool for
young people, giving them opportunities to share their creativity and innovation with the college and local
community. Enterprise learning at Mount Carmel is about our young women having the opportunity to develop skills that meet their needs and that nurture and enhance their intrinsic drive for self-expression.
Ms Collins & Ms Arbuckle
Message from Ms Haynes—Vice Principal
“I am so proud of the students who took part in the Global Entrepreneurship week event, in partnership with the
Global Generators, Central St Martin University and Mount Carmel. A special thank you to Ms Collins and Ms Arbuckle for
coordinating all the events and activities, without their hard work this would not have been such a successful
event.”
GLOBAL GENERATION
PROGRAMME
Well done Mount Carmel Global Generators Liz
Ebengo 10MA, Rima Begum 11EP, Gabrielle
Harding 11AF, Melanie Deb 11AF for their
commitment and enthusiasm at the Angel Honey Club Event at Edward Cullinan’s Architects in
Angel Islington on 22nd November. The generators shared their wisdom about the ecological
importance of bees in our urban societies and served delicious samples of honey collected by
the generator bee keepers from the Kings Cross Skip
Garden Honey Club. The students networked with confidence alongside other honey club
member representatives from Eurostar, Guardian News & Media, OMD and Phaidon Publishing and Argent. It
was great to see past students Kara, Toyosi and Lilienne and to listen to them share their continual positive
experiences, strengths and self awareness they have gained from being Global Generator
Programme Ambassadors. Ms Collins & Ms Arbuckle

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY
YOUNG VOICE EVENT
For the past two years the Young Voice Event has taken place in the LRC centre space. This event celebrates the multi-cultural diversity of the college community. Students are asked to write a poem that is
reflective of ‘what celebrating black
history means to them’. This year the event
took place in the temporary library space in
BS1 on Wednesday 24th October during
lunchtime. Students’ were videoed reciting a
personal representation through poetry,
expressing a message they wanted to share
with the college community, describing
‘what black history means to them’.
Celebrating Black History at Mount Carmel is
a great opportunity for students to share
their many gifts and talents.
A big thank you to the following
students who took part! Ms Collins

“Black history month is a celebration
which acknowledges people and events
in the history of African diaspora. Mount
Carmel is a rich, diverse community and
we have students and staff from all over
the world. This makes our school a special and unique place; we learn about
different cultures and share the many
talents our community has to offer.
We encourage students to speak to
family and friends who either came to
this country during the Windrush or who
had first-hand experience of welcoming
the immigrants of the 1950s.”
The quality of the entries for the Young
Voice competition this year were
extremely high, which made it very
difficult to choose one winner. Therefore I
decided to choose one entry from key
stage 3 and one from key stage 4.
Congratulations to Doyin and Chloe, the
creativity and content of your Submissions
were superb!”

ART
YEAR 7 ART TRIP
Forty Yr 7 students visited Tate Modern on Tuesday 3 rd July to see the
Edvard Munch exhibition (Mrs Heath’s groups, who have studied
‘Expressionism’) or the Surrealist paintings (Mr Pantelides’ groups).
Throughout the day students sketched, analysed and evaluated
paintings.
ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY CLUBS
Art club is held every Wednesday after school giving many students the
opportunity to utilise the new Art facilities. Students can use this time
& space to complete homework, classwork or to just come along and
get creative.
OLYMPIC TORCH
Three Year 7 students, Cassie Asenso, Khadejhia Vassell and Melanie
Ramirez, made a replica of the 2012 Olympic torch at Art Club for the
college Sports Day. It was paraded during the Sports Day opening
ceremony.
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
Photography club is on every Thursday after school. This club has been
run by a photographer called Natalie from the Cubitt Gallery. Natalie
has taught students how to create studio lighting and take portrait and
macro photographs. Students selected work for an exhibition held in
the old building main entrance during July.
GCSE Art Exhibition 2012
The GCSE 2012 Art exhibition
was a proud moment for the
students whose work was seen
by parents/carers, teachers,
invited guests and friends. This
exhibition was a culmination of
all the coursework and exam
work produced over the last 2
years, and it was an opportunity for the students to see the results of all their hard work. The
exhibition was also seen by many of the other students in the college, who were inspired by the artwork. A selection of this work
was exhibited at the offices of Pinsent Masons during July.
AGAINST VIOLENCE AND ABUSE EXHIBITION
Five GCSE students Lyric Coote, Taitum Curpanen-Roberts, Michaela
Hutchinson, Greta Precaj and Gabrielle Earlington-Barrow had their
art work selected by the curator and exhibited at the Together Our
Space Gallery in Old Street in April and May 2012.
The art work was created for an exhibition with an organisation
called ‘AVA’ (Against Violence and Abuse). AVA is a UK charity working to end all forms of violence against
women and girls. Mrs Heath

ART
ART TRIP TO WESTMINSTER ABBEY
The Art department arranged an
educational visit to Westminster Abbey for
students to take part in an Icon workshop.
The students had a tour of the Abbey and
learnt about the history of the building.
They then learnt about 'Icons' and their
religious, spiritual and artistic significance.
They then took part in a practical workshop
where they were taught how to 'write'
their own icon, and were able to use gold leaf and egg-tempera paint to make their own icon.
ISLINGTON MUSEUM GALLERY EXHIBITION
Between March and May 2012, students Nisha Kaur, Mary Oladele, Nafi John, Sena Wogormebu and Sasha
Zyryanova from Mount Carmel had Art work exhibited at Islington Museum Gallery, as part of a collaborative
exhibition of work with 5 other Islington schools and colleges.
Mount Carmel students, Rima Begum and Rebecca Erdis also
curated the exhibition with some students from City and Islington
College and the Cubitt Gallery.
CITY HALL ART EXHIBITION
City Hall hosted an exhibition during Nov 2011 of pictures created
by current and previous GCSE Art students at Mount Carmel,
depicting their representations of violence against women, gender
stereotypes and emotional conflict. Three Year 11 students, Rachel
O'Toole-Hawkins, Ashlie Prempeh and Rebecca De Freitas
Mendonca had their work exhibited. This was organised to
mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence
against Women on 25th November. This exhibition idea
emanated from a 10-week project exploring these issues
through art and popular culture. This project was run
at Mount Carmel in partnership with Cambridge Education
and Goldsmiths College. Mrs Heath

MUSIC
The build up to Christmas is fast approaching in
the Music Department. We kicked off the term
with ‘The Big Sing Liturgy Thing’ trip for Year 7 which was a day of
music and fun worshipping God. This was extremely successful and we
look forward to returning next year.
At the moment, the Music Department are preparing for lots of
Christmas performances and the Choir are working very hard to

prepare for these. We will be performing for the doctor’s party at the
Whittington Hospital and High Gate retirement home, bringing festive
cheer to the local community. The Choir will also be taking part in the
Christmas pop up concert in the N1 centre in Islington on 13 th Dec at
12.00pm and we would be delighted to have your support. The biggest
event in the music department’s calendar is the Annual Christmas
Carol concert which takes place on 14th December at 6.30 in St
Gabriel’s Church. The Mount Carmel Choir join St Joseph’s primary school
and St Aloysius Choir for an evening of celebration and festive song.

PLATFORM ARTS
CENTRE
November 2012, Year 10 GCSE Art students went to Platform Arts Centre
for some experimental drawing workshops.
Students were given protective clothing to wear and the drawings were
created by students using the space around themselves on a massive
sheet of white paper on the floor. Students used a range of different
materials and experimented with creating large-scale drawings using
different techniques, such as drawing with their left hands, not looking at
their drawings but just at the person or object they were drawing and
drawing in the dark using lamps on their heads! The students created
some interesting results and the workshops were both educational and a
lot of fun. Mrs Heath

DRAMA
SHAKESPEARE SCHOOL
FESTIVAL
On the 7th November Year 9 and 10
students from the college were star performers at
the Pleasance Theatre in Islington with their production of 'Macbeth'. This was part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival, a nationwide
annual event that celebrates the plays written by
William Shakespeare. This year Mount
Carmel collaborated with Duncombe Primary
School who were also taking part in the festival,
and each school's performance contained students
from the other school.
The festival organisers praised the quality of our
students acting with A particular mention made to
Megan Kendrick for the way in which she tackled
such a complex character in Macbeth. They also
praised the students commitment to the piece, especially the scenes involving the witches which they
thought were inventive, atmospheric and eerie. The
attitude from each student involved was amazing
and they approached this difficult play with confidence and focus. The whole experience was enjoyed by all involved and left them with a fresh enthusiasm and love for Shakespeare. The brave cast
went on to perform a further 3 times to their peers
at school.
Year 9 – Old Vic School’s Club
For the 4th year running we have been successful in our bid to be a part of the Old Vic Schools Club. A selected
group of Year 9 students are given the opportunity to see each play performed at the Old Vic for the current
season and also receive a 2 hour practical workshop in school that explores the characters and themes of the
play beforehand. So far this year, the students have taken part in one workshop and have been to see the play
Hedda Gabler, which they all thoroughly enjoyed.
Barbican Box
In early November Mr Jackson took part in an intensive 2 day CPD course for a project called the Barbican
Box. This will involve one Year 9 class in the new year who will be exploring the contents of a suitcase to solve
the mystery of who it belongs to, which will lead to them devising their own performance piece to be shown
at the Barbican Centre later in the year. This is the first time that we have been involved in this project and it
will be very exciting to see where the students take it.
Also, as part of the project, the chosen class will get to see a theatre performance for free at the Barbican
Centre in January.
10
DRAMA
Friends of Almeida
In early December, the Friends of Almeida Touring Company came in to
perform to a year 7 class. The performance was followed up with some
workshop activities that looked at some of the characters and themes of the
piece.
Workshops
As a school we are part of a partnership with the Almeida Theatre who work
predominately with our Year 10 and 11 students. As an introduction to this
partnership, the new Year 10 students were given 2
workshops from theatre practitioners, one on body language and the other
on voice. The students came away from these with new ideas about how to
develop their performance skills further and explore how they play
characters in performance.
In the Spring Term the students will take part in a 10 week residency with the Almeida which will end with
them performing an original drama piece on the Almeida stage itself, to an invited audience.
Donmar Warehouse Project
On Tuesday 27th November, the Year 10 GCSE Drama class took part in
the launch day for a theatre project in association with The Donmar
Warehouse theatre in the West End. The day consisted of 3 workshops
followed by a performance of the play The Promise, by Aleksei Arbuzov, in
the evening. The Drama class have now got the challenge of coming up
with an original performance piece of their own based on the themes
from The Promise, that they will perform at Trafalgar Studios in January.
Visit to City and Islington College
On Thursday 29th November, the year 10 GCSE Drama students became critical advisors for a group of A
Level Drama students at City and Islington College. Our students watched the A Level devised performance pieces and fed back about what they enjoyed, but also anything that did not make sense or they
felt needed a bit more development. The A Level students found this very helpful and took the comments
on board in order to make their pieces even stronger for their A2 exam. The Mount Carmel students
found the experience very exciting as this is the next level of Drama after GCSE, so they left the college
feeling that they had something to aspire to. Links between the Drama departments are being strengthened and further visits will take place next year.
Islington Borough Drama Project
As part of an initiative developed by the borough of Islington, a group of 3 students in year 10 have been
attending bi-weekly sessions educating them about areas of domestic violence, arranged marriages and
violence towards women of all ages. In January
these students will recruit another 5 or 6 students
and they will form a small theatre company. The
aim will be for them to devise a performance piece
developed from what they have learnt. The hope is
that the finished performance can be taken in to
other schools in the borough in order to raise
awareness of the issues.

MFL
At Mount Carmel College we
pride ourselves on the quality
of teaching and learning in the
Language Department.
Language learning at Mount Carmel
is fun! Lessons are delivered using a variety of methods including songs, games and ICT, plus the more traditional skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. We use e.g. songs in our lessons which we strongly
believe is a great and enjoyable tool for the pupils to learn foreign languages.
We also offer plenty of opportunities for pupils to experience French and Spanish cultures in the lessons and
after school. The French and Spanish assistants play a crucial role in helping students develop language competencies and confidence in a relaxed and supportive learning environment.
We run a club on Mondays and Wednesdays after school for KS4 students. The purpose of this is to prepare
them for their exams. Mr Kaddouri
MFL –TURKISH CLUB
Turkish club runs every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 till 5:00 every week.
The Tuesday club is set as a homework club aimed at students who wish to complete homework and or class
work. The Wednesday club is run by the Turkish BPSA which is aimed at students wanting to complete their
GCSE Turkish. The clubs were also held throughout the last academic year, these clubs were aimed at students who wanted to sit their AS level in Turkish resulting in 92% of passes and 70% grades A – C. A lunch
time club is also set up for students as a drop in session for the girls who wish to catch up with work or just a
general chat about school.
TURKISH COFFEE MORNING
A big thank you for the Turkish speaking parents who attended the year 11 progression
presentation.
The parents found this presentation very helpful and easy to understand as it was translated in to Turkish.
The presentation Included information such as applications to sixth form colleges and the range and level of
courses available. There will be on going coffee mornings held to meet the needs of the parents and students. Ms Sevinc

PE is a compulsory part of the curriculum which contributes to good health. Therefore it is essential that all students
bring their full, correct PE kit to every lesson. If your daughter is ill or injured, she must still bring her PE kit with a
note. Students may be given an alternative role within the lesson (i.e. coach / official) however they are only excused at
the discretion of the Head of PE on submission of a medical note. Pupils who fail to bring their PE kit will
be loaned clean spare kit: 1 x no kit = reminder
2 x no PE kit = detention
3x no PE kit = exclusion
Detentions take place on Tuesdays 3.10 – 3.20pm in PE department . Also, please ensure that your daughter’s PE kit is clearly labelled so that lost property can be reunited with its owner.

MATHS—MYBANK IN A BOX
MyBnk has continued running its savings operations since September of this current
school year.
We however, had its official annual launch
on Tuesday 6th November, 2012 at
12:15pm in our operations room, M4. On
hand to facilitate the official opening were
senior management and other teaching
staff and a team of MyBnk consultants to
the college including Sharan Jaswal and
Hannah Jones.
Other visitors who attended included: The
Mayor of Islington, Councillor Jilani
Chowdhury, Ronke Lawal, CEO of Islington
Chambers of Commerce John S. Gilbert,
Managing Director, Senior
Country Officer for Benelux and Nordic
Region at JP Morgan.
The opening was a big success as students
turned up at the bank to make deposits,
open new accounts and also to get more
information about the bank. 15 new
accounts were created in the session and some students had to be encouraged to return on the next
opening of the bank, in order to open their accounts, due to time allotted for this event.
The visitors were amazed at the manner in which the MyBnkers conducted themselves and the level
of enthusiasm they displayed. Since the start of the autumn term, we have saved more than £400. Our
customer base is now over 100 savers from across all year groups in the school. MyBnk continues to
encourage students to save weekly and collect termly and promotes a culture for saving, whether
small amounts or otherwise so as to continue to build their financial awareness. Mr Garfield
