INTRODUCTION:
“Hidden Treasure –
Analogy of the Pearl”
This will be a lesson about a certain hidden treasure – the
pearl. The analogy of the pearl will help us to understand
our “net worth” or “value” in God’s kingdom. After we’ve
entrusted the “irritations of life” to God and allowed Him
to pick us up out of the “MUD” [Mostly Unfulfilled
Desires] of life, then God’s “hidden treasure” within us is
revealed. And much like the pearl developed in an oyster,
we emerge as a precious treasure with significant value.
This lesson was born from my question to the Father,
“Why is it so hard for most of us to obey You?” The
Father’s answer: “Because my daughters don’t recognize
how much I value them in spite of their mistakes or failures
in life.” Help them understand how much I really love
them and how much I value them and want to bless
them!!!
So, this is my attempt to do just that!
I invite you to
take this journey with me to discover how the analogy of
the pearl can apply to our life in Christ Jesus and help us
understand the process of developing our value in this
Christian Walk.
4
I’ve included a “Pause” section at the end of each
chapter.
This
“Pause”
is
for
your
personal
prayer/reflection on the analogy discussed. I hope that
you will use these “Pause” moments to allow God to
uncover the “hidden treasure” within you!

Chapter I
Protection
The Pearl:
A pearl is created by the protective reaction of an oyster
or mussel to the inadvertent or intentional introduction of a
foreign body into its organism.
This reaction creates
concentric layers of a substance called “nacre” which
surrounds the “foreign body” to slowly form the pearl,
layer-by-layer.
The Analogy:
Just as the oyster has a protective reaction, God wants to
be that protective action in our lives when the “irritants of
life” come our way. He wants us to turn to Him in difficult
times so He can surround us with His love, His grace, and
His everlasting mercy, which ultimately develops our
character in Him, layer by layer. The “irritants of life”
should turn us towards God so He can fully develop the
“treasure” that He’s placed inside of each of us.
Scripture References & Meditation:

Romans 5:1-5 - Therefore, having been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom also we have access by faith into this grace
6
in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations,
knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and
perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope
does not disappoint, because the love of God has been
poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given
to us.

Romans 8:18-19 - For I consider that the sufferings of this
present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory
which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation
of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of
God.

2 Corinthians 4:7 - But we have this treasure in earthen
vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God
and not of us.

James 1:2-5 - My brethren, count it all joy when you fall
into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith
produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work,
that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If
any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to
all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to
him.
7
As you read these verses, meditate on how God can be
glorified and bring true victory even in the midst of your
own trials and tribulations.
Let Him be the protective
reaction that covers you and protects you from the
“foreign” things that try to invade your life. His protection
builds “layers upon layers of faith” in us when we truly
learn to trust Him.
PAUSE: Write a brief prayer asking the Father to be your
protective agent when the storms of life come your way!
Read and meditate upon Psalm 91.
8
Chapter II
Power of the Holy Spirit
The Pearl:
Now let’s look at another aspect in the development of
the pearl. The substance, nacre, is made up of calcium
carbonate in the shape of tiny crystals called Aragonite.
Aragonite crystals are held together with a glue-like
protein. Nacre plays a vital role in the pearl’s luster (or
glow).
The Analogy:
In the spirit, we can compare “Nacre” to the end product
of what God wants to develop in us. As we allow God to
shape us, we develop the fruit of the Spirit, which in a sense
is “held together” or developed in us by the power of the
Holy Spirit. Just as nacre is vital in the development of the
pearl’s luster, the Holy Spirit is vital in the development of
the fruit of the Spirit in us. By allowing the power of the
Holy Spirit to “hold us together,” the luster or “radiance”
that God wants to reveal in the earth is developed in us.
Our obedience to God’s Word and our submission to the
Holy Spirit helps to develop the light of Jesus shining from
within
us
through
the
fruit
of
the
Spirit.
9
Scripture Reference & Meditation:

Galatians 5:22-25 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. Against such there is no law.
And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also
walk in the Spirit.
Meditate on the various characteristics of the fruit of the
Spirit. Think about how this fruit is developing in your
life. Are you allowing the radiance of each fruit to shine
through and let others see the light of Jesus in you? Which
fruit seems to be lacking or need more development in your
life?
Also read & meditate on Galatians 5:16-26 – take
note of the differences between the lust of the flesh and the
fruit of the Spirit.
PAUSE: Write a prayer asking God to show you what fruit
needs more development in your life and what lust(s) of the
flesh needs to be removed from your life. “Listen for HIS
voice!” Be prepared to make the necessary adjustments as
the Holy Spirit directs.
10
Chapter III
Reflecting the Light
The Pearl:
In continuing in the story of the pearl, we find that nacre
layers are thin, translucent and reflect light, thus creating
the pearl’s distinctive luster.
In other words luster is
caused by the reflection on the surface of the pearl and the
passage of light through layers of nacre that appear to make
the pearl glow from within.
The Analogy:
Now doesn’t that sound a lot like what God expects from
us. He expects us to allow the work of Jesus at the cross to
permeate our hearts and minds so that our lives will be a
reflection of His great love for us. The Holy Spirit works
from within and the more we submit to His promptings and
guidance, the more we radiate (or reflect the light on the
outside) as evidence of God’s unconditional love in this
world. Once we learn to trust and obey God’s Word, the
less worldly we become. God’s Word begins to illuminate
from within us; and the more consistent we become in
walking in the Spirit, the more distinctive our luster and the
more refined and valuable we become in God’s kingdom.
11
Scripture References & Meditation:

Psalm 119:105-106 - Your word is a lamp to my feet and a
light to my path. I have sworn and confirmed that I will
keep Your righteous judgments.

Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city
that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a
lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it
gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so
shine before men, that they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven.”

1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of
Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
As you read the scripture references, spend a little extra
time meditating on Matthew 5:14-16. Ask yourself, “Am I
really letting my light shine before men so that they will
glorify my Heavenly Father?”
PAUSE: Write a prayer asking for the light of Jesus to
shine in and through you more and more each day.
12
Chapter IV
Holy Spirit – “Our Helper”
The Pearl:
One
interesting
thing
we
can
note
about
the
development of the pearl is that a very healthy oyster has a
helper, a tiny pea crab which lives unharmed within,
sharing the debris which the oyster sucks in and ultimately
keeping it clean to allow the development of the pearl
inside.
The Analogy:
Our Helper is the Holy Spirit who lives within us and is
there to help “keep us clean and pure within.” When we
take in the “debris of life,” the Holy Spirit is continuously
speaking to our spirit man to cleanse and purify us. He is
constantly calling us to develop a state of Holiness. And
when we let Him have His way, He cleanses us from the
inside out! He is able to take away any sin, bitterness,
resentment, despair, gloom or sorrow that may try to
overtake us.
Our bodies were created to become the
dwelling place of the Holy Spirit when we receive Jesus
Christ as our Savior. The Holy Spirit dwells within us to
help us walk in the newness of life – holy and righteous
unto the Lord!
13
Scripture References & Meditation:

Isaiah 52:1-2 - Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O
Zion; Put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the
holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean shall no
longer come to you. Shake yourself from the dust, arise; Sit
down, O Jerusalem! Loose yourself from the bonds of your
neck, O captive daughter of Zion!

Romans 5:6-9 - For when we were still without strength, in
due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a
righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man
someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates
His own love toward us, in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now
been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath
through Him.

1 Corinthians 6:17-20 - But he who is joined to the Lord is
one spirit with Him. Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that
a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual
immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know
that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in
you, whom you have from God, and you are not your
14
own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify
God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 - Do not be unequally yoked
together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has
righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has
light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with
Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For
you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I
will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their
God, and they shall be My people.” Therefore “Come out
from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not
touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.” “I will be a
Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters,
says the LORD Almighty.”
While meditating on these scriptures, focus on the thought
of being the “temple of the Holy Ghost or the “temple of
the living God.” What does this mean to you and how does
it affect the way you see yourself? Do you need to take
better care of your temple?
15
PAUSE:
Write a prayer asking God to help you
understand how your body is the “temple of the Holy
Spirit” and ask for the wisdom and strength to make
sure that your “temple” is fit and ready for the indwelling
of the Holy Spirit.
16
Chapter V
Contentment – Riding the Tides of Life
The Pearl:
Tending oysters to harvest pearls is a continuous
process.
The best pearls come from contented oysters.
Pearl farms tend to the pearls and minimize the stress on
the oysters, moving them while the tides and temperatures
are moderately stable and cleaning them from marine
parasites.
The Analogy:
Tending to our soul by spending time in God’s Word and in
His presence through prayer and meditation is a
continuous process. Our walk of obedience is part of that
daily process whereby we are constantly changing as we
learn to submit to Our Heavenly Father. He is available to
“minimize” our stress. He cares for us and wants our lives
to be void of the “worldly parasites” of SIN. As women, we
have many things that come into our lives and try to dictate
who we are. However, as daughters of the Most High God,
we don’t have to settle or conform to the standards or the
expectations of the world or anyone else, for that matter.
We can claim the promises of God and know that we are
special and valuable in His eyes; and that’s what really
17
matters. We do not have to be in bondage to sin or the
condemnation that it brings with it! We find that we are
more content in this world when we allow the Holy Spirit,
Our Comforter and Guide, to stabilize us through the
various “tides of life!”
Scripture References & Meditation:

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your
reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you
may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect
will of God.

2 Corinthians 3:15-18 - But even to this day, when Moses
is read, a veil lies on their heart.
16
Nevertheless when one
turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is
the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a
mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into
the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of
the Lord.
18

Philippians 4:11-13 - Not that I speak in regard to need,
for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I
know how to be abased, and I know how to abound.
Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full
and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can
do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Meditate on these scripture references, particularly
Philippians 4:11-13. While meditating on these scripture
references, reflect on what God is requiring of you at this
time in your life. Are you “tending” to the things of God so
that you can get rid of the parasites and stresses in your
life? Are you allowing God to transform your life into one
of peace and contentment?
PAUSE: Write a prayer asking God to help you become
content in all things and begin to truly experience His peace
that surpasses all understanding.
19
Chapter VI
The Process of Development
The Pearl:
Generally, pearl development takes about two years, and
the longer a pearl has to develop, the thicker the nacre, and
the higher quality of the pearl. But there is a limit to what
is practical - a pearl can be allowed to develop an extra
year, but then the size is not feasible in the pearl market.
The Analogy:
Sometimes it seems that we will never come out of or be
released from a particular situation; but we must continue
submitting to the One who is able to strengthen us and keep
us from falling so that we can develop into the brilliant
hidden treasure that God has prepared and already
destined for us to become. However, as in the case of a
pearl, if we take too long in the process, we become of no
real value because many times we are in rebellion when we
take too long to do what God has called us to do and be
who He has called us to be. Rebellion is not a good place
to be when you are a child of the King! We have to learn to
trust and depend on God’s timing – we do not want to get
ahead of Him or lag too far behind Him. His timing in our
lives is perfect if we just submit and allow Him to do what
20
He wants to do in and to us – “uncover our hidden
treasure!”
Scripture References & Meditation:

Romans 6:1-2 - What shall we say then? Shall we continue
in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall
we who died to sin live any longer in it?

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 - Therefore we do not lose heart.
Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward
man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction,
which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more
exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look
at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not
seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the
things which are not seen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 - Concerning this thing I pleaded
with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And
He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My
strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most
gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power
of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in
infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in
21
distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I
am strong.
As you meditate on the scriptures, ask yourself whether you
are in a situation that seems to be taking too long or
pressing you harder than you want to be pressed.
Just
remember that it is part of the process and the sooner you
learn to yield to the Holy Spirit the quicker the process.
So just stay in “the process” and watch the beauty of His
Holiness revealed in you.
PAUSE:
Write a prayer asking God to reveal to you
exactly where you should be in the process.
Then, be
prepared to obey…even if He says, “It’s time to move on!”
22
Chapter VII
Consequences of Worldly Living
The Pearl:
Final note about the oyster: The closer to the equator,
the duller the pearls become – they tend to be yellowish
and lack luster.
The Analogy:
In this comparison, the equator could represent the earthly
pleasures of this world.
And so it is in our lives, the
worldlier we become or remain, the duller we are as
Christians – our lights lack luster!!! We must remember
that God says that we are in the world, but not of the world.
He has called us out to be a peculiar people. It’s okay if
we are considered to be “different.” It is in our “divine
heritage” to be “different.” Our walk as Christians is
supposed to be unusual to the world because we are
surrendered to One whose thoughts and ways are higher
than that of the world. I John 4:4 -5 assures us, “You are
of God, little children, and have overcome them, because
He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world,
and the world hears them.” So, let’s purpose not be so
closely connected to worldly things that our light begins to
23
dim and lack luster! The world needs our light to shine
into the darkness.
Scripture References & Meditation:
Romans 6:15-16 - What then? Shall we sin because we are
not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not
know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey,
you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin
leading to death, or of obedience leading to
righteousness?

Galatians 5:13 - For you, brethren, have been called to
liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the
flesh, but through love serve one another.

2 Peter 2:19-20 - While they promise them liberty, they
themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person
is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. For if,
after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through
the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are
again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is
worse for them than the beginning.

Matthew 5:14 - “You are the light of the world. A city that
is set on a hill cannot be hidden…”
24
Meditate on these scripture references and especially reflect
on Matthew 5:14. As you meditate, think about how we
were meant to shine our light (ultimately His light within
us) into the dark places of this world.
Is your spiritual
light a little dim or is it totally non-existent? Is it lacking
the “luster” that God intended for you to shine into the
darkness of this world?
PAUSE: Write a prayer asking God to help you rekindle
or ignite the fire within that will set your light ablaze.
Think about who needs to see His light shining in you!
25
CONCLUSION
Now that we’ve compared the development of a pearl to
the development of God’s hidden treasures within us, let’s
complete a brief mental exercise that will exhibit God’s
desire to release the hidden treasure within us. God wants
us to experience the fullness of His love and He wants to
unlock the hidden treasure within us by setting us free from
sin and the things that have us in bondage and hinder us
from becoming “the pearls” that He desires us to become.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son - John 3:16. Take a moment to think of the
sin or the thing that is keeping you from being all you want
to be and all God wants you to be in Him for His kingdom.
Imagine a pearl that has been covered in mud and the
mud has been allowed to harden. All you see is this piece
of “rock;” you don’t even know that there is “hidden
treasure” beneath all that dirt! But imagine dipping it into
some red-colored water to wash away the dirt; and
suddenly you discover the “hidden treasure” of a beautiful
pearl! The water represents “Jesus blood” and the “rock”
represents the irritants of life – the “MUD” that we allow to
cover our lives, and the sins that try to keep us
26
bound…some of us have hardened our hearts with
unforgiveness or bitterness, and some of us have just
allowed too much of the world to get in/on us through
gossip,
lies,
backbiting,
jealousy,
hatred,
sexual
sins/various perversions, addictions, and other things that
we know is not of God.
Some may be as simple as
laziness or procrastination, but you know what that thing is.
This is your opportunity to “draw the line…allow God to
truly dip/wash you in the precious blood of His Son…and
make a change.” The blood doesn’t just cover our sin, it
takes away our sin! When God sees us through the blood
of the Crucified Lamb (Jesus), He no longer sees our
sin…He sees the righteousness of His Beloved Son, Jesus
Christ! God wants us to recognize our value in Christ
Jesus…He wants us to be made whole…and He wants us to
be able to help someone else see their value in Christ Jesus
to become whole!
Scripture References & Meditation:

2 Corinthians 4:5-7 - For we do not preach ourselves, but
Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for
Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to
shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give
the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
27
Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels,
that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of
us.

Matthew 13:43-46 - Then the righteous will shine forth as
the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to
hear, let him hear!
The Parable of the Hidden Treasure - “Again, the
kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which
a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells
all that he has and buys that field.
The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price - “Again, the
kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful
pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price,
went and sold all that he had and bought it.
What is the “Mud” in your life that has caused you to be
like that “rock” with the hidden treasure? What needs to be
washed away so you can expose the “hidden treasure”
within you? Have you recognized or acknowledged “the
pearl” that God wants to develop in you?
28
PAUSE: Take a moment and meditate on who God says
you are and look at your life right now! Does it measure up
to the “treasure” or “pearl” that He says you are to become?
Write a prayer asking God to help you yield to the Holy
Spirit so that you can become the person HE created you to
be.
29
THE CHALLENGE
Now is the time to confess it with your mouth – open
your heart and your mouth and confess those things that
have been revealed! Ask God to change your heart and
help you learn to walk in the real “newness of life.” (If any
man be in Christ, he is a new creature; behold old things
are passed away, and all things are made new. II
Corinthians 5:17) God loves you unconditionally and He
wants you to KNOW that you are His special treasure.
Begin today…see yourself the way God sees you and
accept His precious gift by being the best “you” that HE
created you to be!
If you have never accepted Jesus as your Savior, just
imagine Jesus washing you in “His Precious Blood” and
say this prayer: Heavenly Father, I ask you to come into
my heart and save me. I repent of my sins and ask that the
blood of Jesus wash and make me whole. Here and now, I
accept Jesus as my Savior and I pray that you will help me
to make Him LORD of my life! I confess with my mouth
and believe in my heart that Jesus is Your Son who You
sent to save me, and that He died and rose again so that I
30
might have the right to eternal life. Thank You Father for
Your Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. I receive the gift of
salvation today! In His precious name I pray, Amen!
AWESOME! Now, continue in the challenge by
purposing to study God’s Word and learn about the
character of Jesus. If you stay with it, you will begin to see
the hidden treasure that God wants you to become. He first
wants us to recognize our value in Christ individually, and
then like a strand of pearls, he wants to join us together for
edifying one another and building His kingdom.
Like a
strand of pearls, when we are linked together [with one
mind/one purpose], we are so very beautiful. Older women
are supposed to teach the younger women, but sometimes it
seems that everyone has their own issues that they are
dealing with and no one has the time or energy to teach
anyone…well, God is calling us to HIS standard…it’s time
for us to exercise the power we have in our lives and over
the lives of our loved ones. Women have the power of
influence and it’s time that we use it to bring unity into the
Body of Christ…with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can
reconcile and restore our families; we can reclaim a
generation of children; and we can leave the legacy of a
blessed inheritance for the next generation.
31
If you truly understand what God is saying to you in this
message and you want to become that hidden treasure, I ask
that you make a covenant with God to seek first His
kingdom and His righteousness through Jesus Christ.
There really is no other way to truly understand and know
the value that you hold in the heart of God! If you do not
feel you are ready or worthy to accept this challenge, then
remain in prayer that God will help you to know that you
are His and He loves you and is ready to receive you as His
own…to forgive you of your sins and cleanse you from all
unrighteousness (See 1 John 1:8-10). You have value in
Him and you are valuable to Him. In God’s Kingdom, you
are a “pearl” – one of great value to the King of kings and
Lord of lords! He loves you with an everlasting love! (See
Jeremiah 31:3)
Open your heart and your mind today, and let God
develop the “pearl” in you so you can shine His light into
the world and help develop other “pearls” in His Kingdom!

Analogy of the Pearl
is an
extension of a Bible Study that God gave Jackie several years
ago.
It was written and taught to help God’s daughters
understand and learn to embrace “their value” as defined by God.
Because Jackie hopes that the message of this Bible Study will
create an increased desire in God’s daughters to walk in purity
and discover the victory in allowing the Holy Spirit to uncover
the hidden treasure within them, she has decided to put it in print
to share with as many as possible. Jackie believes that we are all
valuable in God’s eyes and it’s time for His daughters to arise
from every trial and tribulation and begin to walk in the Spirit,
embrace God’s love, and shine the light of His glory to those
living in darkness as they discover the value of God’s hidden
treasure in their own lives.
