From Confrontation to
Coopetition: 40 Years of
US–China Relations |
Take Your LinkedIn
Profile to the Next
Level |
February 21st 1972, a raw winter
day, President Nixon and a handful
of government officials flew on an
unnamed Boeing 707 flight, landing at Beijing Capital International Airport. The city was
deeply bogged down in the torturous Cultural Revolution;
anti-imperialist slogans were everywhere. No one could
possibly know that Nixon’s one week visit would change
the world for the next 40 years. What happened during the
President’s weeklong trip? What is the standing relationship
between the U.S. and China today? And how does this relationship continue to shape the world? We invite you to join
us as two U.S. Ambassadors, a global business leader, and
the President of the US-China National Committee speak
about the past, present and future of US-China Relations.
Moderator: Stephen A. Orlins President of the National Committee
on US-China Relations
Speakers: Stephen Roach Chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia
Jeffrey Shafer Former Vice Chairman of Citi Global
Banking and Senior Asia Pacific Officer in New York
Ambassador Winston Lord U.S. Ambassador to China
(1985-1989) Ambassador Nicholas Platt U.S. Ambassador to
Zambia (1982-1984), the Philippines (1987-1991) and
Pakistan(1991-1992)
LinkedIn is an exceptional
networking tool; a source for
finding the right job; and a
powerful way to advertise your business.
With more than 135 million registered users
in over 200 countries, LinkedIn is a way of
effectively marketing a brand—you! If you
want to take it to the next level, join us for
a hands-on workshop led by Mark Lipson,
an advertising professional with 15+ years
experience. Start from scratch or print-out
your current LinkedIn profile and Mark will
give you tips on how to maximize it, while
showing you some before and after results.
Long before social media was considered “en
vogue”, Mark Lipson helped global advertisers build their brands’ reputations in the
U.S. via conversational marketing and social
media programs. He has worked with these
brands to engage with consumers on Yahoo!,
MySpace, and most recently on LinkedIn.
He is excited to share how you too can leverage LinkedIn to your fullest advantage by
thinking of yourself as your own brand and
by positioning yourself for success.

With the arrival of another June comes another Penn Club
Anniversary! Our Clubhouse opened its doors on June 16,
1994. After eighteen years of operations, the Penn Club
has become a fixture on 44th Street, as well as in the
world of private social clubs. Throughout our lifespan,
we have provided services and social opportunities
to discerning members of the entire University of
Pennsylvania community. Our fine Clubhouse, with its
comfortable rooms, outstanding food and beverage
operations, diverse program offerings and state-of-the-art
fitness center is recognized around the world as a model
of accommodating excellence. Among out accolades are
our distinction as a Platinum Club of America and our
designation as a New York City Landmark. This is due to the
vision of the University of Pennsylvania, the enthusiasm
and dedication of our membership, the spirit and integrity
of our devoted staff, and the supportive encouragement of
our Boards and Committees. As members of a world class
Club, you have much to be proud of.

Over the years, our membership has stabilized. As a result,
the Penn Club has remained strong during the challenges
of the lingering financial issues. While this is truly a good
thing, we cannot just rest on our laurels. A Club as young
as ours must be devoted to the ongoing growth and
development of its membership. We have a well focused
dedicated Membership Committee, as well as a bright
and hard-working professional Membership Marketing
Department. It is thanks to their efforts that the Penn Cub
membership numbers are as strong as they are. At the
The Private Oasis: Landscape Architecture
and Gardens |
Tuesday, June 5th, 7:00 p.m. Whether a home is
a great place to live often depends on what lies
beyond its walls. The landscape — when it has
a well thought out shape and characters — gives
a home much of its character and satisfaction.
In The Private Oasis, two of New York’s leading
landscape architects, Edmund Hollander and
Maryanne Connelly, guide readers through a
series of remarkable landscapes and gardens, explaining how to apply their techniques, no matter what the size of the property.
Their experience covers a wide range of scales, including estates and gardens
across the East Coast.
After receiving his undergraduate degree at Vassar College, Ed Hollander studied
Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the President of
Edmund Hollander Design, a firm with offices in NYC and Sag Harbor. He has
taught at the Graduate School of the Fine Arts at Penn.
Maryanne Connelly graduated with a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture from
Penn. She has taught at the Pratt Institute and the New York Botanical Gardens.
$35 per member and $50 per guest plus tax and service charge by Tuesday, May

same time, it must always be kept in mind that the growth
and stability of any club membership is the primary responsibility of the existing membership. We count on you
to introduce new members to the Penn Club as often as
you are able to. You are the ones who recognize the great
potential members in your circle of friends and associates,
and you are the ones who can bring them to our doors.
Once inside, you know they will not be disappointed.
One category of membership that sometimes gets overlooked is our Associate Membership. This category is made
up of individuals who did not go to the University of Pennsylvania. Instead, they are friends and acquaintances of
our current Penn members who are deemed to be a good
fit with our membership community. They are introduced
and sponsored for membership by you, and they represent
a small but vital portion of our membership. Their quality
and integrity serve to enhance the overall ambiance of our
membership, and their usage of our facilities gives even
greater strength to our overall operations. Please contact
our Membership Marketing Department to learn more
about this very important segment of our membership
opportunities.
My staff and I continue to be excited to be a part of your
Penn Club life. Its status as a Platinum Club of America is
a source of great pride to us all. Your comfort, safety and
enjoyment are of top importance to us. We are eager to welcome you often to your home-away-from-home in New York.

The Face-to-Face Book: A Guide to
Real World Social Marketing |
Tuesday, June 26th, 7:00 p.m. Social media is hot
and getting hotter. Companies are scrambling
to embrace Facebook, Twitter, and other online
social networking sites. But the facts suggest the
opportunity to engage in social marketing is far
bigger — and many are blinded to this larger opportunity by the shiny allure of today’s newest tools
and technologies. Human beings are hardwired to
share, and what they are motivated to share in the
real world is different from what they do online. The overwhelming
amount of word-of-mouth still takes place offline, a fact that is often
overlooked. In his forthcoming book, The Face-to-Face Book, Ed Keller
(C ’77, ASC ’79) and co-author Brad Fay share concrete strategies and
case studies for how companies, both large and small, can create “total
social” brands, tapping all the levers that unleash conversations to drive
your business success. Come here Ed talk about his book, and about
how word-of-mouth works in the real world.

European Football Championship
in the Grill Room |
June 8th – July 1st. Who will you root for? The UEFA Euro-
pean Football Championship is an international competition
staged every four years to determine the top national team on
the continent. It is considered the second biggest international tournament in the sport (after the World Cup). The competition consists of a qualifying phase with all eligible nations
drawn into groups, followed by playoffs and a final tournament consisting of
16 surviving nations. Germany has won "the Euros" three times — the most
by any country — while France and Spain (the defending champion) have
claimed the title two times each. Stop by the Grill Room between June 8th
and July 1st to see which European nation will claim victory.
Scentfully Yours: An Exploration of
Fragrance |
Tuesday, July 10th, 7:00 p.m. Sue Phillips, fragrance expert and
founder of Scenterprises, will take you on a perfume-filled
journey to learn about the magic and mystery behind scents.
Undoubtedly, this will be an educational and “scentertaining”
event. Take Phillips fun quiz and your answers will reveal if
you love light refreshing citrus notes; feminine, alluring florals;
sensual spicy orientals; or warm, woodsy powdery blends. Then
receive a sample of your preferred aroma at the fraction of a
cost. Our sense of smell is tied into memory, emotion and taste — this is
sure to be an event you will savor forever!
Phillips works behind the scenes for iconic fragrance brands like
Tiffany’s & Co and Burberry. She recently appeared at Saks Fifth
Avenue and Lord & Taylor for Mother’s Day and guided many to
experience new beautiful blends.

Grow Your Business |
Wednesday, July 18th, 7:00 p.m. Roll up
your sleeves for an interactive, mini
strategy session with Wharton alum
Kaihan Krippendorff. Bring your strategy
challenges and throw your standard
approaches out the door! Krippendorff has
just published his fourth book, Outthink
the Competition: How a New Generation of Strategists Sees Options Others
Ignore, and will be at the Penn Club to share its insights and processes.
A former McKinsey consultant, Krippendorff has emerged as a sought
after speaker and consultant, helping Microsoft, L’Oreal, Symantec, and
numerous fast-growing mid-market companies develop growth strategies.
Outthink the Competition profiles the next generation business strategists:
the “Outthinkers.” These people are entrepreneurs and corporate leaders
with a new playbook who understand that competition is undergoing
a fundamental paradigm shift and that during such revolutions,
outthinkers beat traditionalists. Krippendorff earned MBAs from Columbia Business School and London
Business School, a BSE in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania’s
Wharton School, and a BSE in engineering from the University of
Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering. He writes one of the most popular

Why did you choose to attend Penn (if Penn alum)? I fell in love with Penn
at an early age. My uncle, Martin Wolfe, was a Professor of Economic

childhood. I am old enough that I still cringe when I hear it referred to as
UPenn.
Were you named after anyone? No.
If you were a crayon, what color would you be? GT silver.
What book are you currently reading? Wagner’s Ring: Turning the Sky Round
Currently Single/Married with Kids? Married to Gail Byeff
(spousal member of the Penn Club), with 2 children, David
and Stephen.
Hobbies: Golf, Skiing, Fishing, Opera, and Driving my
Porsche.
In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? I treat patients
with blood disorders and cancer, and I direct the George Bray Cancer
Center of the Hospital of Central Connecticut.
Where do you like to vacation? At our home on Lake Winnipesaukee and
around Europe.
What do you often do at the Penn Club? My wife and I stay at the Penn
Club very frequently when we are in New York. We like to go to the
opera, a Broadway show, or visit our children. We have enjoyed many
dinners at the clubhouse, including a number of theater evenings and
holidays, such as Mother’s Day brunch. We’ve also had receptions for our
sons’ graduations at the Club.
Favorite part of Penn Club history: I was struck by the mural in the Grill
Room depicting the 1982 victory over Harvard that gave Penn its second
Ivy League football title. My wife and I were at that game, and I wonder
how many members of the Penn Club know what game it depicts.
