School Awards - South Gloucestershire Council

Time4Reading
School Awards
SECONDARY
Foreward
We are delighted to introduce the Time 4 Reading School Awards as part of our South
Gloucestershire Year of Reading campaign.
We know that reading is good for us and there have been a number of recent national reports
which confirm the importance and value of reading. Being able to read underpins education and
accelerates our chances of success; however, reading is also especially important because it can
contribute so much more to our lives – reading provides pleasure, enjoyment and inspiration as
well as helping us to understand the world and experience worlds other than our own.
The Time 4 Reading campaign is to encourage people of all ages in South Gloucestershire to
make time for reading. As part of this campaign, your school is invited to participate in the Time
4 Reading school awards. The Time 4 Reading awards are available to all primary and secondary
schools in South Gloucestershire.
This booklet explains how schools can get involved in the awards and promote the pleasure and
enjoyment of reading as well as all the other benefits which reading can bring.
We look forward to following the success of the Time 4 Reading school awards.

Library projects and
campaigns that you
can take part in
The Concorde Book Award
The Concorde Book Award, supported by The Bristol Post, is a literary award for secondary
school students aged 11-13 in South Gloucestershire and is organised by librarians from South
Gloucestershire secondary schools and public libraries.
The scheme encourages young people to experience the pleasure and social benefits of reading in
groups, as well as encouraging them to keep reading during their teens.
The Concorde Book Award is unusual amongst similar schemes involving children and young
people all the way through from choosing the longlist and the winner to giving presentations at
the annual award ceremony and designing the promotional materials. Since its launch in 2007,
hundreds of young people have taken part in the scheme via their school or public libraries. The
Post has been a media partner for the Awards, helping to promote the scheme and contributing to
the final award ceremony, since 2013.
The scheme begins with students nominating books to form a longlist, from which a panel of
South Gloucestershire librarians select a shortlist of six high quality fiction books that are also wide
ranging in interest. Young people are then encouraged to join a reading group, whether at school
or in a local library, to read the six books and talk about each one with other group members,
between the start of the new school year in September and the following March. Young people
can also take part through their local public library if they are not in a reading group.
Readers vote for their favourite title before World Book Day and the winner is announced at a ‘red
carpet’ event at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. More than 150 people attended the 2015 event
which included presentations by reading groups and a guest author where Gillian Cross collected
the award for her dystopian novel ‘After Tomorrow’.

Volunteering in public libraries
‘Volunteering has made a difference as it has enabled me to learn from new experiences for example
I have gained confidence in talking to new people, it has gave me a chance to get involved with the
community as well as the skills as working as part of a team. I feel that it has been a worthwhile
experience and would love to do it again.’ (Shelby, Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer, aged 17)

During the summer each year we look for enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to work as part of the
team running the national Summer Reading Challenge for children aged 4 -12. Volunteers spend
their time engaging with children who are working their way through the Challenge, participating in
a range of fun activities with them and encouraging them with their reading.
It is a great opportunity to develop skills in communication, team working, and creative projects
during the summer whilst having some fun and making new friends or working towards a
volunteering award.
UWE and Public Libraries Partnership
To encourage everyone to make better use of local libraries, South Gloucestershire Library Service
and The University of the West of England (UWE) have joined together to make it easier for the
public and students to access local libraries.
Members of public libraries aged 16 and over can now use their Library Active card at four of UWE’s
campus libraries during staffed hours (Bower Ashton, Frenchay, Glenside and St. Matthias); they are
able to borrow five items and have access to specialist print journals and support from university
library staff.
For more information about library services for children and their families contact your local library
or visit www.southglos.gov.uk/libraries
