Colour? Music? I was asked to answer three relatively easy questions... Most people probably wouldn’t have any trouble expressing what their favourite flower, colour, and music is. However, after several days of agonizing over this, I came to the conclusion that was like asking me which of my friends do I prefer better? So I have to say, I love each for their unique and special qualities. What brings you joy? Joy, for me, is making others happy. What is your favourite thing about working at Hospice? As for my position at the Hospice, the most wondrous and inspiring part is the overwhelming, never ceasing, generosity of people. ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Virtue Pick - Purposefulness Purposefulness is being aware that each of us is here for a reason. We value our lives by discovering the part we are uniquely meant to play. We discern our intention and focus on it mindfully. We visualize it happening. We set goals and achieve them step by step, resisting distractions. We give each task single-minded concentration and excellence. We invest our full enthusiasm into even the simplest job. In the flow of our lives, there are many turns and unexpected events. Within it all, there are lessons to be learned and gifts to receive. Purposefulness is trusting the journey. “Our calling is where our deepest gladness and the world’s hunger meet.” Frederick Buechner I discern my true calling. I create a clear vision for this time in my life. I set goals for achieving my purpose. I concentrate fully on what I am doing. I enjoy giving excellence to each task. I find the opportunity in every experience. I am thankful for the gift of purposefulness. It gives my life true value. ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ HOSPICE LIBRARY – A BOOK REVIEW The Hospice library is an up to date and comprehensive resource for clients and volunteers Opening Heaven’s Door: What the Dying May be Trying to Tell Us About Where They’re Going, Patricia Pearson – “This book is full of well-researched and very reasonable evidence for the mysterious life beyond what we know and scientifically can prove…For those who like to question the nature of life and unexplainable phenomena there is much here to be explored.” – The Vancouver Sun When Death Speaks: Listen, Learn and Love, Stephen Lloyd Garrett – “A timely and important book made more necessary with every passing day by the Aging of the Planet, and the fact that modern man lives more and more removed from natural things like dying.” - Moses Znaimer (Founder, President & CEO, ZoomerMedia) The Half-Empty Heart, Alan Downs, Ph.D. – “Frustrated. Irritable. Discouraged. Fed up. These are among the feelings experienced by millions of people suffering from low-grade depression. The Half-Empty Heart is a powerful and practical book that explains how the condition takes hold - and presents simple yet profound ways to overcome it. Using anecdotes from his private practice as well as quizzes, checklists, exercises, and a complete five-week plan for achieving lasting results, the author, shines light into the dark corners of this isolating and debilitating condition. You can feel good again.” It’s Barbecue Season! We can help you and you can help Hospice. This year we are introducing you to a new and great fundraiser that will not only fill your freezer with top quality BC produced products from Two Rivers Specialty Meats but will also support the work of hospice in our community. Two Rivers is a purveyor of fine local meats that are free of antibiotics, hormones and chemical feed additives. All money raised through this fundraiser will stay local and be used to provide free programs and services for people at one of the most vulnerable times of their life - facing a terminal illness, caregiving a loved one who is dying and grieving the loss of a loved one. So we invite you to "Help Hospice Help Others" by placing an order today. We are offering three options that we hope will suit everyone's needs. Please help us by telling your friends, families, co-workers or fellow volunteers about this great opportunity. We have three great options that we hope will suit everyone’s needs. With all the renovations, including painting, and reconfiguring the layout of the store, staff and volunteers alike have been busy, busy, busy. As well, the donations have been just pouring in so it’s been a challenge to keep up. A few days ago we had a work party after closing time to help get caught up. There were twelve of us, some even staying as late as 9:00 pm. It was a great crew and it really helped clear out the back log. I was going to snap a few pictures but with all the hustle and bustle I totally forgot. I want to thank everyone who helped out that night. And I also want to thank everyone else who’s been hanging in there and adapting to all the changes. I know it’s not always easy but both Connie and I and all the staff at both stores and from Hospice House sincerely appreciate it… If you haven’t been in lately to the Bowen Store stop by and see what’s happening here… with the additional space we have lots of furniture on display and also expanded our clothing department. Thanks again to ALL our Hospice Volunteers! Your time and effort is so greatly appreciated. ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Words of Wisdom “True listening is another way of bringing stillness into the relationship. When you truly listen to someone, the dimension of stillness arises and becomes an essential part of the relationship. But true listening is a rare skill. Usually, the greater part of a person’s attention is taken up by their thinking. At best, they may be evaluating your words or preparing the next thing to say. Or they may not be listening at all, lost in their own things. True listening goes far beyond auditory perception. It is the arising of alert attention, a space of presence in which the words are being received. The words now become secondary. They may be meaningful or they may not make sense. Far more important than what you are listening to is the act of listening itself, the space of conscious presence that arises as you listen. That space is a unifying field of awareness in which you meet the other person without the separative barriers created by conceptual thinking. And now the other person is no longer “other”. In that space, you are joined together as one awareness, one consciousness.” ~ Eckhart Tolle, Stillness Speaks
