the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, April 4th.
There were more than 80 teams present each
consisting of ten students. Team members
representing St. Dom’s were senior Robert Shelly,
juniors Luca Ke, Jason Zhao, Matt McLean, Julian

Sophomore Cam Palmer, and 8th graders Elliana
Smith and Ben Kase. Every student scored in the
double digits. Weber Meng was in the top 35 of all
the students in the State as well as the top 11th
junior in the State. The team finished 3rd in Class D
for the season and 3rd in Class D for the State

Robotics Team
The robotics team enjoyed a successful competition
season. The season began on January 7, 2017,
when teams competing in the FIRST Robotic
Competition received the rules, guidelines, and
goals of the first event to be held in Bridgewater,
Massachusetts. The “Saint Dominators Team
6224” had six weeks to design, build and test their
creation. At the competition in March, the Saint
Dominators participated in 12 matches over a twoday period. Each competition (over 90 for the
weekend!) is made up of 3 BLUE Robots versus 3
RED Robots in what is called an “Alliance.” Team
6224 from St. Dom’s matched up with 42 other
teams in these 3-team “Alliances” to score points by
shooting “fuel-balls” into a boiler to make steam, or
placing gears into the airship rotor system and
finally to “climb-aboard” the airship when readied
for “take-off.” Team 6224 finished 22 out of 42
teams.
Matt McLean ’18, Matt Roeser ’18, and Nick Welsh
’19 shared the driving responsibilities during the
matches while Connor Samson ’17, Josh Fortin ’18,
and Elliot Hachey ’17, manned the pilot and loading
stations. Julian Rogers ’18 and Weber Meng ’18
kept the computer(s) running, and Maggie Kase ’18
and Izzy Luce ’20 scouted other teams during the
matches. Behind the scenes, Joe Pan ’19 and
Daniel Huang ’18 jumped in wherever needed.
Three weeks later they participated in the FIRST
competition Pine-Tree event held at the Colisee.
There the team once again met challenges in the
dynamic STEM environment, finishing in the top 20
of 40 teams. There are 2-3 potential competitions
over the summer in Maine that the team hopes to
compete in as we get ready for the next challenge,
starting January 7, 2018.

competition season and photos, please click here.

be a hero?”
Next, they’ll compete against school winners from
St Brigid, St John's, Holy Cross, and Durham on
April 27 at 6 PM at the Auburn campus.
Player and Coach of the Year
The Maine Sunday Telegram name Kristina
Cornelio the Girls Hockey Player of the Year. The
paper wrote, “A sophomore forward, Cornelio had
55 goals and 29 assists to the Saints to and
undefeated season and their second straight state
championship. She stood out in a team of
standouts…”
The paper also named Paul Gosselin, the Girls’
Varsity Hockey Coach, the Coach of the Year.
Gosselin led the Saints 40-2 over the last two
seasons capped this year with a 10-2 win over
Falmouth in the state final.
St. Dom’s Welcomes New
Girls’ Varsity Soccer Coach
Saint Dominic Academy is pleased to announce that
Alessandro Pappalardo will be our new varsity
girls’ soccer coach. Pappalardo brings a wealth of
knowledge from his experience as a professional
soccer player and as a coach.
Pappalardo was trained at some of the elite soccer
academies in Europe before
making his professional
debut with Pro Vercelli.
After a couple of years with
Pro Vercelli, Pappalardo
continued his career in
Switzerland, where he
played professionally for
seven seasons, followed by
stints in Giana, Italy and Luxembourg.
What’s Next…
Currently, Pappalardo plays for the Portland
Phoenix of the PDL while coaching elite boys and
girls teams for Global Premier Soccer. He also
served as an assistant men’s coach at Bates College
this past season.
We are excited about the advanced technical and
tactical knowledge that Alessandro brings as well as
his enthusiasm for the game of soccer and working
with kids. He will begin his work at St. Dom’s with
a girls’ soccer summer program culminating in a
week-long day camp.
