BCMA Weekly Instructional Agenda for 02/17/14-02/21/14
This Wednesday, 02/19/14, is an Early Dismissal Day! All students will need to be picked up
at 1:00 pm when school gets out, and there will be NO after school activities.
Report Cards for the 4th Six Weeks will go home this Friday, 02/21/14!
Yearbook News – The 2013-2014 yearbook is now for sale. The cost for this hardback book – a memory
book of the first year of Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan – is $35. You may order your book
online at this web address: http://jostensyearbooks.com/?REF=A01124983 Books may also be ordered
on campus during lunch in the cafeteria this week every day except Friday. If you wish to pay with a
credit card, please order online; if you choose to use cash, please order on campus.
This week in Science:
Unit 8: Simple Machines: In this unit, students investigate how inclined planes and pulleys can be
used.
02/17/2014- Monday
Six types of simple machines. Complete each section of the chart with a drawing and a definition and an
example of the simple machine. Notes /Foldables
H.W - Throughout a day at home or in school, identify five simple machines that you use. Now choose
one machine and draw a diagram of that machine in use. Describe how the machine operates. Indicate
whether it is a lever, wedge, pulley, inclined plane, screw, or
wheel and axle
02/18/2014- Tuesday
KEY CONCEPTS :3
EXPLORE part 1 –Lab Students construct an inclined plane using a board and a stack of books. For a
weight they use a bag of marbles. Students test to see whether it is easier to pull a bag of marbles up an
inclined plane as opposed to straight up from the ground. Students also test how different weights of
marbles affect the force needed to lift them up. OR Gizmo – Ants on a slant Gizmo
H.W Simple machines puzzle
02/19/2014 – Wednesday
EARLY RELEASE
Brain pop – Pulley and inclined plane.
H.W Reading Science A
02/20/2014- Thursday.
KEY CONCEPTS : 1-4
Explore Part II: Using a simple pulley how do pulley systems work to reduce the amount of force
required to lift a load?
H.W 5 Assessment Questions – Gizmo. Create: Plan a research paper that describes how a specific
simple or compound machine (other than the two studied in this lesson) is constructed, functions, and
affects the force required to lift a load
02/21/2014- Friday
KEY CONCEPTS : 1-4
Fundamental Questions. Review
1.How do pulleys differ from inclined planes?
2. Is there a connection between the distance the load travels and the change in force required to move
a load when using an inclined plane or a pulley? How could you test this question?/ PMA questions
review.
H.W -STANFORD EXAM –NOTES.
Key Concepts




Key Concept 1: Inclined planes and pulleys are simple machines that have few or no moving
parts.
Key Concept 2: Inclined planes and pulleys reduce the amount of force that must be exerted
and/or change the direction of force exerted on an object in order to move it. An object's mass
is related to the amount of force needed to move it.
Key Concept 3: An inclined plane is a simple ramp. It decreases the amount of force that is
exerted to lift an object. As an inclined plane increases in length, the amount of force necessary
to move an object a certain height decreases.
Key Concept 4: A pulley system consists of a rope attached to a wheel and a load. Pulleys
distribute the weight of the load over different sections of the rope. They reduce the force
needed to lift the load by increasing the distance the load is moved.
Fundamental questions
1. How do inclined planes work to change the amount of force required to move an object?
2. How do pulley systems work to reduce the amount of force required to lift a load?
3. How are inclined planes and pulley systems examples of simple machines?
4. How is an object’s mass related to the amount of force needed to move it?
