NEW HORIZONS COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL FREE VOLUNTARY PREKINDERGARTEN MARCH NEWSLETTER FINE MOTOR: During the month of March your child will be working on their fine motor skills by practicing cutting shapes, painting at the easel, book making and practicing writing their first and last names. GROSS MOTOR: We will be fine tuning our gross motor skills by skipping, hopping, kicking a ball and walking on a line. LANGUAGE: During our circle time we will encourage class participation with open-ended questions to help encourage comprehension and story recall. The class will also review the positional words they have learned. This month we will also be working on our rhyming words through music and reading. As we get ready for Kindergarten we will continue with our Letter recognition and reviewing our lower case letters. We will also be introducing Famous Authors during our circle and center time. We hope to have some fun with the introduction of compound words this month. Look for some funny combinations in the classroom. MATHEMATICS: As part of our Math experience we will be discussing the terms “alike and different”. The class will be sorting and putting animals and objects in order by different attributes. Our shape of the month is the Rhombus. Our Pre K students will be introduced to the clock and how to tell time. SOCIAL/SCIENCE: In our social studies we will continue discussing the weather. Our focus for this month is “Windy Weather”. We will be asking, Is it “ A Lion or A Lamb” kind of weather? As part of our Social Studies our Pre K students will be exploring the continent of Australia, using our globes and maps. In Science we will be discussing life in the forest and the types of trees you might find. LANGUAGE: Language development will include memory recall with stories. During circle time we will encourage class participation with open-ended questions and story recall. The colors for the month are green, yellow and blue. The children will continue to review positional words. We will focus on the letters P, R, T. As part of our language enrichment the students will be introduced to different musical instruments and the sounds they make. MATHEMATICS: Students will be sorting by different attributes - size, color and shape. The class will work on recognizing the differences between - tall, taller, tallest, big, bigger and biggest. The shapes for the month are the Rhombus and Rectangle. We will continue reviewing our numbers 1-10, money and our phone numbers. SOCIAL/SCIENCE: March is the perfect month to discuss windy weather. In our science units will introduce plants and things that grow, rain forest and forest animals and where they live. Our three’s will being doing a special unit on Pets. Although we would love to have them share their pets we are unable to accommodate any live animals in our classrooms but we will be encouraging the students to bring in pictures of their pets. We will continue to strengthen and refine their gross motor skills by hopping, bouncing a ball and balancing on one foot. LANGUAGE: Language development will include memory recall using flannel stories and books we have read. We will continue to encourage the use of expanded vocabulary. The color for the month is green. Our Toddlers will be introduced to the words soft and hard and be able to feel and experience the difference. MATHEMATICS: The students will be working on sorting by animals which will go along with our jungle theme. As part of our math unit the students will continue to review the #’s 1.2.3.4.5. The shape for the month is the Rhombus (diamond). SOCIAL/SCIENCE: March is the perfect month to discuss windy weather. March is also community helper month, the students will be learning about the different jobs in our community and using our dress up clothes in housekeeping. Statements will be done on a request only basis. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR FUND RAISER We will be looking for volunteers for our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. February 28th—March 4th The scholastic book fair is for only one week and only for limited times in the morning and after school. Shopping times are: 3:00 pm-6:00 pm • Special events: Wholesome Tummies March 2nd – 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm REGISTRATION FOR THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR. Registration deadline for all students already attending New Horizons was February 25th, Pre–K parents who are interested in Kindergarten at New Horizons should contact the office and get an Elementary Packet for the fall. Parent contracts have been distributed to all in-house students. Please see your child’s teacher if you have not received your contract. Placement will be guaranteed only for those students who have completed the parent contract and paid the non refundable registration fee by February 25th. Voluntary Pre K Vouchers: (For students who will turn 4 on or before September 1st, 2011). VPK vouchers are due by Friday April 29th. MARCH 9th Class Pictures are a great way to remember your child’s classmates, and we know you’ll be sure to send your child with a special smile on. Unfortunately, we are unable to schedule re-takes, so it’s important that your child attend on the designated day. Preschoolers whose schedule does not include the day of the photo session should switch a day of attendance that week so he or she can be included in the picture. Please look for the order forms to come home in the near future. Summer Session Summer Session for our Preschool students is just around the corner, and many of you are already making plans for activities for the summer. Our 8-week program from June 13th - August 5th provides a summer filled with friends and fun. Registration forms will be going home April 8th.
