Fiscal Year 2009 (July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009)
Illustrations by Joan Chiverton
O
n a breezy Saturday in April, HHT Board and Directors’ Council members travelled to Queens to
visit all five of the Trust’s sites in that borough. We were greeted with stories of the most remarkable
people, who told us about their roles in shaping the quintessentially American values of freedom and
opportunity that we often take for granted. One of them stood up to the most powerful politician in town and
won his case; another received a chilling death threat after speaking against slavery in the U.S. Senate. Standing
on his shoulders is a third, an African-American whose success lights the lives of people around the world. And
next to him is a tiny woman whose large voice spoke boldly for the education of poor women, especially African
Americans. Supporting them all were heroically hardworking farmers, who fueled the American economy.
These men and women are, of course, some of the people who built and lived in the five historic houses
we visited—John Bowne, Rufus King, Louis Latimer, Mary King Murray, and the families of the Queens County
Farm Museum. Now in its 21st year, with 23 sites spread across all five boroughs, the Historic House Trust
is enormously proud to be able to tell such seminal histories in the precious and beautiful sites where they
occurred. It’s an enormous team effort, succeeding only with the unqualified support of the City of New York,
which owns the sites, and the local nonprofit organizations that independently operate them.
We are also indebted to our many donors, whose generosity enables the Trust’s professional staff
to support the historic sites’ varied needs. After 20 years of vigilant and diligent work, we can report with
confidence that the houses are in sound physical shape. Increasingly the Trust is turning its attention to
strengthening the organizations that run the sites, and enhancing the educational programs that are central
to their missions. We also know that many of them are important cultural and open-space resources in otherwise
underserved neighborhoods, and we want to highlight and build on those values. We invite you to join the HHT
team and family with your support, which will reach communities from one end of the five boroughs to the other.
