Beginning Beekeeping II
(LLC 5229)
This is the second of two classes offered
in the spring and summer for any person
interested in learning about beekeeping. The
classes are designed to provide students
with a comprehensive understanding of what
it takes to be a successful beekeeper in
today’s challenging environment. No previous
experience with honey bees is necessary,
but those with some experience will benefit.
Classes are held at the Weitendorf Agricultural
Education Center where a teaching apiary
is maintained. The class is presented as
a combination of classroom presentations
and hands-on experience in the apiary.
Topics covered will include: understanding
queens and the brood nest, managing for
honey production, processing honey, swarm
prevention and management, disease and pest
management, fall and winter management.

In the 19th century, the Irish were at the
bottom rung of the social ladder and highly
discriminated against, forcing them into low
wage menial labor and perpetual poverty.
But when the Civil War began, they saw an
opportunity to prove themselves as worthy
citizens of their adopted country and joined in
droves to fight for both sides. In this seminar,
topics that will be covered are Irish immigration,
Irish regiments that served during the war in
both the North and South, famous and not-sofamous men (and women) who fought for both
sides during the war, the New York City draft
riots, regimental flags carried into battle and
monuments erected to those brave men. There
will also be on display some of the equipment,
uniforms, and personal items that soldiers
would have carried with them into the army.

customs, how long did this period in history

you think). Was mourning the same for the
North as it was for the South? Was a wealthy

Designed for individuals with little or no
commercial driving experience, this program
includes everything you need to receive a
Commercial Driver’s License. You will receive
a Department of Transportation physical,
Commercial Driver’s License learner’s permit
and endorsement preparation. Department of
Transportation rules and regulations, log books,
instruction in map reading and trip planning,
and complete vehicle training to prepare you
for an entry level position in the trucking
industry. In addition, the program includes the
Secretary of State administered Class A road
test. The program can be completed in four
weeks by attending full time, Monday through
Friday, 8a.m.-4:30p.m., or a special evening
session beginning June 5, 2017. Each student
is required to complete 30 hours of home study
during the program. Students are required to

distribution center for the Midwest in the last
decade. Local warehouses and distribution
centers offer numerous job openings for trained
industrial truck drivers. The powered industrial
truck, commonly referred to as the forklift, is
used in every distribution center, major retail

Glen have partnered to offer a training course in
the home healthcare field. The Department of
Labor projects tremendous growth of 49% in the
field due to the aging Baby Boomer population.
Senior care is provided in a variety of settings
including private homes, small group homes, or
large care communities. Topics include arranging
transportation to doctor visits and other outings,
helping with daily personal tasks like dressing
and bathing, light housekeeping and laundry,
learn to move clients in and out of bed and help
them to stand or walk, how to use a gait belt,
organizing client schedule, shop for groceries and
meal preparation and providing companionship
to the client. The home health field offers parttime and full-time opportunities. Work shifts can
be as short as three hours or as long as 24

Join the challenge! Become a member of an all-girl engineering team that will design and build
a variety of solar powered model cars in this three-day camp. This challenging camp will provide
girls in GRADES 6-8 the opportunity to learn about solar energy and engineering.

This S.T.E.M.-focused challenge will introduce students to concepts in solar/photovoltaic (PV)
cells, gear drive and pulley drive systems, along with design and troubleshooting techniques used
by engineers. Each day projects will grow in complexity as the teams design, build, and test solar
car kits. On the final day of camp teams will compete in a solar powered car race to see which
team can design and build the fastest, energy efficient car.

Medical Technology

This course is designed to explore the
many opportunities available to students
pursuing a degree in veterinary technology.
Careers including small animal medicine,
large animal medicine, research, exotics,
wildlife rehabilitation, and education will be
overviewed. Field trips to various facilities that
employ technicians are included in the course
curriculum. Please note, ending times for class

confusing. Join this highly interactive class
designed especially for high school students.
Get to know what you like to do, and how
to earn a living doing it. In this class you
will spend time engaging in activities that
are core essentials to each of the six major
business career groups and six major career
personality types. You will also be given
exercises that focus on the 17 basic job
skills that ALL business professionals must
have to be successful. You will be introduced
to many resources that can help you continue
to move forward, long after the class has
ended. This class will help you explore your
options and focus on a goal.

3-D Literacy Camp –
The Foundation for Innovation (LLC 5168)
This camp will give high school students
an opportunity to explore the skills and
technology needed to create and print 3-D
pieces. Students will print a simple project
of their own as they are introduced to the
elements of 3-D literacy; 3-D printing, 3-D
CAD, and 3-D programming in this handson camp. This camp will also feature the
JJC Makerlab where students will have the
opportunity to learn about additional 3-D
technologies such as a laser cutter and mini
milling machine.

Kids College Culinary Camp
(LLC 3600)
This camp is for high school age students
who want to learn how to prepare and present
artful meals. They will learn safe knife skills,
how to roast, grill and braise meats, and
pastry techniques from a certified executive
pastry chef. The cost is less than $12 per
instructional hour which is a great price for
learning cooking from our award-winning
certified chefs.

Specifically designed for teenagers, this
highly interactive, fun class is designed to
give adolescents the social skills necessary

media etiquette and being a gracious guest.

the SAT test and recommends success
strategies for teens. Students take a preand post-assessments that address the

test-taking strategies. Textbook and other
class materials are included in the class fee.
