ETHIOPIA
LD^ICEF seeks to overcome the neglect of the educational needs of
children in the war and drought'Stric^eri regions o/Borena, Ogaden, Bale
and Eastern Hararghe, where 348,000 refugees and over 874,000 droughtaffccted people live. A tiuo-part assistance programme will cover (1) training
of teachers for war'traumatized and emergency-stricken children, and (2)
provision of classroom equipment and materials for 22 primary schools.
SOMALIA
Because of the civil war, destruction of schools and a long-neglected
school system, most children have received little or no formal education.
50,000 primary school children will benefit from the expansion of U^lCEFs
basic education services, through (1) the rehabilitation and reopening of 90
primary schools, (2) providing 150 primary schools with newly collected and
printed textbooks, and emergency standard education tyts, and (3) tram ing
500 primary school teachers and educational administrators. Special efforts
will also be made to meet the needs of children in especially difficult
circumstances, such as street children, orphans, and war'traumatized children.
SUDAN.
This W^ICEF project will provide basic education and stability to
approximately 50,000 primary'level pupils in displacement camps, where
two-thirds of children are out of school. In some locations the enrollment rate
is less than one percent, with enrollment of girls less than half that of boys.
In emergency areas, teachers are unpaid, and children are traumatized and
malnourished. Rehabilitation and construction of new classrooms, and
provision o/educatio?ial supplies, school latrines, handpumps and storage
tan^s are all part of this programme.
