CITY OF WATERLOO’S STORMWATER CREDIT PROGRAM VOLUME CALCULATIONS CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF A CYLINDER SHAPED RAIN BARREL OR CISTERN 1. Measure the radius in metres (m). The radius is the distance from the center of the circle to any one point on the edge. Ex: radius = 0.3 m 2. Multiply the radius by itself. Ex: 0.3 m x 0.3 m = 0.09 square metres (m2) 3. Multiply that number by pi (3.14) to find the base area in square metres Ex: 0.09 m2 x 3.14 = 0.2826 m2 4. Measure the height in metres Ex: height = 0.9 m 5. Multiply the base area by the height to find volume in cubic metres (m3) Ex: 0.2826 m2 x 0.9 m = 0.25 m3 6. Multiply the volume in cubic metres by 1000 to find the volume in litres (L). (1 cubic metre of water equals 1000 litres) Ex: 0.25 m3 x 1000 (L/m3) = 250 L The rain barrel can hold approximately 250 litres (L) of water. Measure the width of the barrel in metres (m) Ex: width = 1.5 m 2. Measure the length of the barrel in metres (m) Ex: length = 0.9 m 3. Measure the height of the barrel in metres (m) Ex: height = 1 m 4. Multiply the width by the length by the height to find the volume in cubic metres (m3) Ex: 1.5 m x 0.9 m x 1 m = 1.35m3 5. Multiply the volume in cubic metres (m3) by 1000 to find the volume in litres (L). (1 cubic metre of water equals to 1000 litres) Ex: 1.35m3 x 1000 (L/m3) = 1350 L The rain barrel can hold approximately 1350 litres (L) of water. Note: A typical rain barrel holds 200 litres (L) of water. Cisterns typically hold between 350-5,200 litres (L) of water. Page 2 of 5 Waterloo City Centre | 100 Regina St. S., Waterloo, Ont. At a height of 4-5 feet tall, wrap the tape measure around the trunk and record the circumference in inches Ex: Circumference = 50 inches (See Note below) 2. Divide the circumference by pi (3.14) to get the diameter Ex: 50 in / 3.14 = 15.9 This tree has a DBH of 15.9 Note: Avoid branches and forks in the tree. If the fork begins below the 4.5 feet mark, then measure each fork individually. If the fork begins above the 4.5 feet mark, measure the tree as a whole. Provide the length and width of the paved area. 2. If the paved area is not a perfect square… Approximate the area as a square or rectangular and measure the dimensions. Note: The above steps also apply for measuring the surface area of a green roof Page 4 of 5 Waterloo City Centre | 100 Regina St. S., Waterloo, Ont. If the infiltration gallery is a rectangular shape… Provide the length, width, and depth 2. If the infiltration gallery is a cylindrical shape… Provide the diameter and depth Note: If your infiltration gallery was installed at the time the house was built, under the “Installed By” section of the application, select “Homebuilder”. If you do not know the dimensions for any other reason, please contact the City of Waterloo for further help. Page 5 of 5 Waterloo City Centre | 100 Regina St. S., Waterloo, Ont.
