Volunteerism at it’s best
Alberta Warren was honored with a very special celebration on October 19th. She reached her
goal of crocheting 5000 baby hat that are donated to St. Luke's hospital.. Alberta has been putting her talents at work since 2007 and now 5000 babies have a special keepsake from her and
St. Luke's.
Alberta keeps a weekly tally count every week of where her numbers are. As she was getting
close to #5000 she knew she wanted to make that one special. # 5000 was white adorned with
silver specks and trimmed in gold. (She actually made 2 one to keep and one to share.) That
special hat got a special delivery to the hospital so staff could help track where it ended up.
On September 14th we got an email with a video sharing the staff placing that special hat on
this sweet little one. Knowing we had a special party planned on the 19th we waited to show
that video to Alberta. What she did not know was that little Colton Branscomb and his parents
Tyson & Jessie from Solon, IA decided to share in her special day. Alberta got to meet Colton
who was proudly wearing his hat.
Alberta should be an inspiration to us all. Just because you live in a Nursing home doesn’t mean
you can’t still make a difference through volunteering. Alberta proves that age nor disability should
not hold you back. Thank you Alberta for being an inspiration to us all.. Alberta is busy on her
way to 6000;….5100 done and 900 to go.
Please try to keep door
codes quiet and do not
alert residents of the
code. This is in place
for to keep your loved
ones safe and protected.
This will prevent us
from having to
continuously change

Happy Fall!
Our expansion project
has begun. We have completed
our land survey and soil site testing for the areas where we will be
building. We are anxiously waiting to hear the official date of
ground breaking, and only the
Iowa weather will be the deciding
factor on whether we break
ground yet this year, or early
spring next year.
As we reported at the
Annual Meeting, we have not had
to do a “bricks and mortar”
fundraising campaign since the
1993 addition of our East wing.
All three neighborhoods have
been updated and remodeled in
the past few years, without having to ask the community for
financial contributions.
In this season of giving, I am
grateful that we have the support
of our community as we begin
this expansion. We are asking for
you to consider how much Cedar
Manor means to our community,
and the services we will be able
to continue to provide with our
improved space.
If you are able,
please consider donating to our
expansion project. While our
Board of Directors is committed
to seeing this project through, the
more support we receive
from our community, eases our
burden and loan obligation. Donations are tax-deductible, and
there are many sponsorship and
memorial opportunities available.
Contact me, or any of our Board
members for more information
or to make your donation.
Our community needs Cedar
Manor, and we need you!

The Winter Blues & Holiday Depression
Although we often hear that
the holidays are the “most wonderful time
of the year” for many it can be the hardest, especially for the elderly. It is not
uncommon during this time to detect a
change in your loved one’s mood. There
are a number of reasons that we see an
increase in depressive symptoms during
the holiday and winter months. For many,
the holidays bring memories of earlier
times and for some, happier times. The
holidays may serve as a reminder of the
loss of spouse, close friend or family
member, loss of children, loss of independence and traditions upon moving
into a nursing home, and changes in their
holiday routine. Along with these memories, some may also suffer from seasonal
affective disorder commonly referred to
as seasonal depression or “winter blues.”
This is depression that follows a seasonal
pattern, meaning that throughout the rest
of the year no depression may be present
but with changes in the weather depression appears. Other common causes of
depression include: physical problems,
memory loss, lack of exercise, vitamin
deficiencies, improper diet, among various other reasons.
The first step in treating a
loved one’s depression is detection. Some
of the signs/ symptoms include: irritable
mood, decreased attendance at activities
and meals, becoming overly concerned
with health problems, crying spells, feelings of worthlessness or sadness, anxiety,
loss of appetite, weight loss, decrease in
care of personal hygiene, increase fatigue
or difficulty concentrating, obsessive
thoughts about death or dying, and difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much .
Once depression is detected
there are a number of treatment options
available to help with symptomology.
These treatment plans are tailored to the
individual and can include anything from
increases in visitations, medical interventions, or light therapy. It is important
that symptoms are not overlooked. Other
helpful things you can do include: spending a great deal of time with your loved
one, involved your loved one in a range
of activities, create new traditions and
memories, take time to reflect and talk
Transportation
ers are responsible for loading
and unloading, so a capable
family member/friend needs to
be able to accompany residents
on their trips and get the resident into the building/office.
We appreciate our families’
patience with billing as we
We are extremely grateful to
our Board of Directors for the
purchase of our medical transportation van. It was put to
immediate use in helping to get
our residents to their appointments. As a reminder, our drivVolume 1, Issue 1
about the fun you have had together and
cherish the positive memories, minimize
overwhelming situations, and encourage
limiting alcohol consumptions (alcohol is
a depressant and can often make symptoms worse). The most important thing
we can all do is take time to listen to our
loved ones and make them feel as important as we all know they are in our
lives.
The holidays are meant to be a
happy time filled with family and celebration. We want all of our residents to be
able to enjoy these season and live the
happiest lives possible. If you should see
an increase in depression symptoms in
your loved one or any other reasons for
concern please let the nursing staff at
Cedar Manor of your concerns. You may
also contact Latasha Cardenas, LMSW in
the Social Services department. We wish
all of you the happiest of holidays and a
wonderful new year.
monitor our new transportation

appointment. Effective January
1st, 2016, our transportation
charges will change to $25/hr
