Reading – In our classroom, we are very excited with all the progress students are
demonstrating in reading. The morning group continues to convey enthusiasm and
dedication, as they move through each lesson in Empower Reading. Summarizing events
and ideas presented in a fictional text will continue to be our focus, for both the morning
and afternoon groups.
Writing – The month of November was spent practicing proper paragraph form.
November seemed to fly by and we did not have an opportunity yet to begin our fictional
narratives, and therefore this month students are eager to begin brainstorming and
organizing their ideas for their winter story. They will begin to develop their first draft,
by organizing ideas into several linked paragraphs!
Oral Communication – Our Oral Communication goal this month is to communicate
ideas and information with clarity, using effective vocal skills and nonverbal cues.
Media Literacy - This month students will continue to identify elements of specific
media forms.
(i.e., Media Form: TV talk show; Elements: host, studio audience, guests, commercial breaks)
Mathematics –
Last month, the morning group worked on various hands-on math activities to develop a
greater understanding of counting money amounts and rounding numbers. In December,
students will work on the strand of Geometry and Spatial Sense. They will identify and
sort 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes, identify and sort quadrilaterals, identify
benchmark angles and create 3-D figures using concrete materials.
As a final activity for patterning, students in the afternoon had an amazingly fun time
creating patterns, as they made their very own “English Trifles!” It was a yummy and
rewarding treat after spending many weeks identifying, extending and creating patterns.
In December, students in the afternoon will also work on the strand Geometry and
Spatial Sense. They will identify and sort different types of quadrilaterals, identify,
measure and construct angles, and identify scalene, isosceles and equilateral triangles
according to angle and side properties, and identify and sort 3-D shapes, according to
shape of faces, number of edges and vertices.

The Happiest of Holidays!
