VBS Backyard Bible Campers Serve Neighbors this Summer
Second-Ponce de Leon’s 2014 Vacation
Bible School welcomed more than 100
children to experience “God’s Backyard
Bible Camp Under the Stars.” Thanks to the
efforts of dedicated volunteers and helpers,
children spent the week having a blast
serving Jesus. Our preschool and elementary
campers participated in service projects each
day that included:
Preschool:
Monday – making visors and door hangers
to give to friends
Tuesday – creating treats for local firefighters
and cards for our neighbors at CampbellStone Retirement Center
Wednesday – visiting with firefighters and giving them their treats
Thursday – cleaning Children’s Ministry classrooms
Elementary:
Monday – writing letters to missionaries
Tuesday – creating snack bags for BCM
Wednesday – painting birdhouses for our neighbors at CampbellStone Retirement Center
Thursday – writing thank you cards for VBS volunteers
In addition to their daily service projects, our VBS campers
collected $980.60 to support Buckhead Christian Ministry. During a daily competition between
the boys and the girls, campers brought their change that will be used to help provide emergency
and housing assistance to individuals and families in crisis. (See page 3 for details about how you
can bring items for BCM’s food drive.) After the girls were proclaimed the contest winners,
Minister of Missions and Students Ryan Wilson graciously received a pie in the face from camper
Aubrey Lumpkin.
Lindsey Richardson, Minister to Families with Children, extends a big thank you to all the
VBS volunteers and to those who donated supplies for our decorations and crafts. The Children’s
Ministry also expresses gratitude to our entire church family for their efforts and prayers. (See
page 2 for more VBS photos and a volunteer listing.)

T
he Second-Ponce de Leon Ridgecrest Lodge celebrates
50 years of ministry this year. In 1958, SPdL Pastor
Dr. Monroe F. Swilley Jr. proposed having a cottage at
Ridgecrest, the Baptist Conference center in North Carolina.
In 1961, the church bought the lot and the lodge was finished
and dedicated in fall 1964. The facility cost $38,000. The
lodge hosted a young adult Sunday School class as its first guests.
The Ridgecrest Lodge boasts magnificent views of the
mountains from its screened porch. The lodge has 10 rooms
with a bath for each. The bunk room contains double-decker
beds for larger groups. The large combination kitchen and
dining area provide room for guests to cook and enjoy their
meals. They can fellowship and relax around the living area’s
stone fireplace.
The area around the Conference Center provides many
things to do while at Ridgecrest. The town of Black Mountain is
nearby with shopping and great places to eat. The city of
Asheville, The Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Biltmore House
offer varied attractions within a short distance.
In honor of the Ridgecrest Lodge, the Heritage Window
(next to the Sanctuary Building elevator) focuses on a display
containing photos, postcards and newspaper articles about the
lodge and Ridgecrest put together by Church Historian John
Roma. Come by and see this unique part of Second-Ponce’s
history.
If you would like to stay at our historic church lodge, please
contact Mary Ann Hall (404.591.4381 or [email protected]).

Second-Ponce de Leon volunteers will hand

around the Peachtree Road Race route will
close around 5:30 on Friday morning. The
wheelchair race begins at 6:45 a.m. The
footrace starts at 7:30 a.m.

briefly
7/4 ~ Holiday Closings. The Church Office and Family Life Center will
be closed for the Independence Day holiday on Friday, July 4.
7/5 ~ Recycling Center Open. Bring your recycling to Second-Ponce de
Leon on Saturday, July 5, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Second-Ponce serves as
a Community Recycling Center for Keep Atlanta Beautiful on the first
Saturday of every month in our lower parking lot. We accept electronics;
paper for onsite, secure shredding; Styrofoam; metals; latex paint; and
single-stream for residents without recycling services. Now, we accept
textiles (including clothes, shoes, accessories and linens). Most items are
free to drop off, but some small fees apply to paint and other specific
items. Items may only be brought during designated times.
Church Builders Trip. The SPdL Church Builders group will be taking
their annual trip to Bowden, Ga. to help frame a new church building the
week of July 20. This mission trip is a combination of hard work, fun
and fellowship with a dedicated crew of Second-Ponce members and
other churches. If you’re interested in joining this group, please contact
Maggie Roberts ([email protected]) or Drew Kelly (drewkellyatl@
bellsouth.net).
7/24 ~ Senior Adult Peach Trip. Come to beautiful Warm Springs for
a generous buffet lunch at the Bulloch House restaurant on Thursday,
July 24. Then, we’ll take a short drive over to Woodbury to visit the
Carroll Farms peach shed. The bus will depart Second-Ponce at 9 a.m.
and return by 4 p.m. Cost is $20 and deadline to sign up is Thursday,
July 17. Contact Vicki McCaskey (404.591.4344 or [email protected])
with questions or to sign up.
Pray for Youth Summer Camp. Please be in prayer for our youth – and
their chaperones – who will be attending summer camp. Our youth will
be away at Passportchoices at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., from
Sunday, July 13–Friday, July 18. Please be in prayer for the group as
they seek to build bonds with one another and explore their relationship
with God.
Volunteers Needed for Park Avenue Baptist Church Camp. Park
Avenue Baptist Church in Grant Park needs volunteers for a Literacy
Camp it is hosting from Tuesday, July 15–Friday, July 18. The youth
workers that usually staff the camp had to cancel, so Park Avenue needs
20 volunteers each day. The greatest need is for volunteers to help out
Wednesday through Friday. “This is a really great week for kids in our
neighborhood,” says Jen Lyon, “please help us make it happen!” Jen and
her husband, Trey, serve as CBF partner-funded field personnel in their
roles with Park Avenue. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Jen
([email protected]).
New Class for Young Adults. If you’re a returning college student, a
recent college grad or a young professional under 30, come meet with
Senior Pastor Dr. Dock Hollingsworth and Terri Bunch for a new young
adult Sunday School Class. We’ll start on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in room
A227–228 (that’s just underneath the Sanctuary near the Music Suite)
with conversation and fellowship.
