S P A Z I O NO 3 • MAY/JUNE 2006 Cortona New Valdichiana Est Hospital Australia Commonwealth Games 2006 Ancona State-of-the-Art Sport Hall New Valdichiana Est Hospital The new Valdichiana Est hospital complex situated in Fratta Santa Caterina, in the commune of Cortona, has been designed by Prof. Arch. Ettore Zambelli, Professor of Design of Building Elements and Technology of Building Elements at the Building Engineering-Architectural School of the Politecnico of Milan and Chairman of the Building Engineering-Architecture and Building CCS (Study Course Boards) of the Politecnico of Milan. Considered to be one of the greatest expert in technological design, his current research projects focus on dry stratified building techniques and the advantages afforded by this method in terms of building process efficiency and environmental compatibility. New Valdichiana Est Hospital Spazio Mondo conducted an interview with the Prof. Arch. Moreover, the wealth of knowledge, technical data, application Ettore Zambelli, who designed the complex. examples and practical tips coming from the manufacturers is Is there a correlation between dry stratified construction and resilient rubber flooring? extremely valuable, both as a contribution to technical culture in general and as a design tool for immediate application. There is an evident and significant correlation; for instance, the general paradigm of the light-weight character of the dry system which is juxtaposed with the thin layer of the rubber flooring. There is a certain affinity in the character of reversibility and recyclability that tends to be exalted to the highest degree in a dry stratified construction, and can also be observed in rubber floors. Finally, I know that rubber floors are suitable for In terms of energy saving and environmental compatibility, how would you rate the resilient flooring? As mentioned, in addition to optimal hygienic, environmental characteristics, and maintainability, the resilient flooring has a major advantage since it can be recycled, thus making for additional energy savings at the end of their life cycle. dry installation and stratification techniques. THE DRY STRATIFIED BUILDING TECHNOLOGY The Dry Stratified Technology is an alternative to traditional wet construction systems of the block-on-block type or formwork and filling type and, in more general terms, an hybrid version of these two, i.e., the brick-and-concrete system. If we analyze the European standards on energy savings in building construction, or assess the energy efficiency of both newly erected and existing buildings, created on a 90% basis with wet brick-concrete techniques, we readily become aware of the need for new solutions, in conjunction with European examples, whose goal is to construct buildings that are truly sustainable and energy efficient. The dry stratified building technique, also referred to as S/R (Struttura-Rivestimento = Cover Structure), minimizes the use of materials, enables the design process to focus on quality requirements and high energy saving performances. It uses industry derived, certified top quality products and permits an unrestricted freedom of expression from the architectural and aesthetic viewpoints. “Well-established building techniques, consecrated by tradition, are being replaced by building methods and materials that are constantly evolving, in an incessant process of innovation” Considering the design project for the Valdichiana hospital, which considerations prompted you to choose rubber? I chose rubber due to its compactness, acoustical benefits, wear resistance properties and its aesthetic qualities. My previous experience with the Versilia hospital also evidenced the chromatic and “signage” potential of rubber, which is easily adaptable, with maximum versatility, to the graphic and chromatic intentions of the designer. The new sport hall of Ancona, inaugurated February 9 of 2005, is adjacent to the 8 lanes athletic track “Italo Conti”, which itself is located next to a training track with changing room and tribune. This is one of the major permanent buildings for track & field in City of Ancona State-of-the-Art Indoor Track Italy. The structure has 1600 seats, a central straightaway and a 6 lanes track. It can be defined as a versatile installation due to its ability to host sport competitions at a regional, national and international level and also social events. The sport hall was designed by Roberto Buccione, former Italian athlete who now works as a sport facility engineer. The objective here is to create a link between the new indoor facility and the existing outdoor track by transforming the sport park into a real sport citadel; a functional and specialized complex with a great sporting value. THE OVAL AND INDOOR ATHLETIC TAKE OFF BOARDS The parterre of the structure is a 6 lanes track that can be used in a multi-purpose manner. It contains an inside take off lanes for long and triple jump, an 8 lanes straightaway, and take off lanes for pole vault and high jump. The total oval extends a width of 5,92 m. The straight track lanes are 1,17 m wide with a dividing stripe of 5 cm; after the 60 meters finish there is a 25 m deceleration area. Hydraulic Banked Track The sport hall can host indoor Track & Field competitions at an international level and is characterised by an hydraulic dynamic system which allows the two curves to rise in order to transform the flat turns into banked curves. This system allows you to have a very high speed track for competitions when fully banked. It can also be set at any elevation for training purposes while still can be used on a day to day basis as a multipurpose space when flat. The most significant technological element of the track is the under carriage structure, made of stratified wood panels and steel metal supports, which helps to maintain a uniform response of the dynamic impulses of the athletes. The panels are attached to the metal support which prevents undesirable deformations. In reference to the curves, the under carriage structure is equipped with an oleodynamic mechanism which allows it to rise while providing maximum flexibility in terms of usability; the maximum inclination of the curves is 10°40. By totally reclining the mobile part of the track, the later becomes usable in a multi functional way. This system allows multiple positions: it can be set at any elevation for training purposes or competitions. The track can be fully banked to flat in only 3 minutes ARCHITECT Roberto Buccione SURFACE Sportflex Super X Performance All track & Field equipment MOMOYAMA GAKUIN UNIVERSITY N E W S SOCCER The Best Turf Pitch in Japan Spazio Mondo interviewed Professor Ko, manager of the soccer club.
