FRIEDRICH HÖLDERLIN, DER ISTER Hoelderlin´s Danube river

FRIEDRICH HÖLDERLIN, DER ISTER
Hoelderlin´s Danube river hymn presents the river as a connection between his beloved suevian
region and idealized classical Greece - „Istros“ is the greek name for the lower Danube. Thus the
river flows over five foldout three-page etchings as a stream of poetry and water, carrying verses
and symbols and figures. The etchings accompany Hoelderlin´s poem which has been handset,
fitting to their immense size, in classical, huge 28p Bauer Bodoni type.
Concept, handsetting, etchings and printing on Velin d´Arches mould paper 270g: Eckhard Froeschlin. 52 pages, 50 x 33 cm (etchings in total 50 x 99 cm). Handbound by Roger Green, leather
with embossed spine and graphic label, box. 18 copies, 2009.
