THIS WEEK AT FPC WORSHIP SCHEDULE May 17, 2015 Gospel Lesson: John 17:13-19 page 880 New Testament Lesson: 1 John 5:1-13 pages 991-992 Sermon “God Gave Us Eternal Life” The Rev. Joel T. Moore Associate Pastor During the Praise and Worship Service the congregation will be singing the following praise songs: “Firm Foundation,” “Victory Chant,” “As The Deer,” “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” and “This Is Amazing Grace.” The special music will be “This Is Amazing Grace” sung by the Praise Team. During the Traditional Service the congregation will sing the following hymns: “Come, Thou Almighty King” and “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine!.” The Introit will be “The One is Blest” from Andro Hart’s psalter The CL Psalms of David. The anthem will be “Eternal Life” music by Olive Dungan, text by St. Francis of Assisi. The Children’s Choir will be singing “All of My Praise,” by R. E. Schram. “This Is Amazing Grace” Phil Wickham was born on April 5, 1984. He hails from San Diego, California. He’s been busy the last few years releasing 7 LPs, his latest being “Ascension.” Philip was raised in a Christian home, the second of three children (brother Evan, sister Jillian), and after feeling the need to “make his faith his own” he began leading worship for his youth group at 13 years old. He graduated from Calvary Christian School in Vista, California. Wickham’s father is currently a worship leader, and both of his parents were at one time members of Jesus movement band Parable. His older brother Evan Wickham is also a musician who used to serve at Calvary Chapel in Vista, and now currently serves at Solid Rock Church-Westside, Portland, OR. His parents, John and Lisa, encouraged Wickham to learn popular praise songs and to write his own. Wickham began his full-time music career by touring California and recording his first album. On November 2, 2008, Wickham married his longtime girlfriend, Mallory Plotnik. They have one daughter, Penelope Maye Wickham. “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine!” It might seem unlikely that a blind writer of hymns living in a slum and a wealthy woman living in a mansion would have anything in common –– but Fanny Crosby, the blind hymn writer, was a humble woman with a number of distinguished friends. Grover Cleveland, who later became President of the United States, met Fanny Crosby as a young man, and they became lifelong friends. The friend in the mansion was Phoebe Knapp, the daughter of a Methodist evangelist. When she was just sixteen years old, Phoebe married Joseph Fairchild Knapp, a young man who went on to found the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. The Knapps worshiped at the John Street Methodist Church in lower Manhattan, which is where Fanny Crosby also worshiped –– and so a friendship was born. Phoebe, the wealthy matron, often invited Fanny, the blind hymn writer, to her palatial home. Phoebe enjoyed music, and had a music room furnished with a collection of musical instruments. During one of Fanny's visits, Phoebe invited her to the music room, where Phoebe sat down at the keyboard and played a tune that she had written. "What does that say," she asked? Fanny clapped her hands in delight and said, "That says, 'Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!'" And so a hymn was born. During her lifetime, Fanny Crosby wrote eight thousand hymns, many of which became famous –– but "Blessed Assurance" just might be the most famous of all. ––Copyright2008, Richard Niell Donovan SUNDAY, May 17: Praise and Worship Service, 9:00 a.m.; Sunday School, 10:00 a.m.; Traditional Worship Service, 11:00 a.m. MONDAY, May 18: Angel Academy, 9:00 a.m.; Stewardship Committee, 5:15 p.m., CR TUESDAY, May 19: Church Staff Meeting, 8:45 a.m., CR; Session Meeting, 5:15 p.m., Rm. 210 WEDNESDAY, May 20: MBS, 6:45 a.m., Rm. 210; Angel Academy, 9:00 a.m.,; Sr. High Lunch, 12:37 p.m., YC; Praise Team Rehearsal, 5:15 p.m.; Chancel Choir, 6:30 p.m.; THURSDAY, May 21: WID, 10:30 p.m., CR; METS Lunch & Game Day, 11:45, Commons SUNDAY, May 24: Pentecost: Sunday School, 10:00 a.m.; Combined Worship Service, 11:00 a.m., with Communion. HOUSE OF FAITH: First Presbyterian Church, for the fourth year in a row, is forming a team of volunteers to prepare and serve a meal to House of Faith campers on Wednesday, July 15 at Lake Brownwood! The last three summers a team of FPC volunteers have traveled to Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat and fed over 300 elementary-age children and their counselors. This year we will feed high school age campers and plan to feed 350. We need your help! This is a great way for our youth to get any service hours they might need for school or civic organizations. It is also a wonderful opportunity for mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, cousins, and grandparents to work side-by-side in service to our Lord by feeding and serving others. Call Susan Gober to volunteer, 655-5694. T VBS 2015 he school year is winding down and summer plans are heating up! One thing you won’t want your children or grandchildren to miss is VBS 2015—Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power! As in years past the week begins with a family fun kick-off party at the Lake Lodge on Sunday, May 31, from 6:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. and then June 1-June 4, from 9:00 a.m.—noon at our main church campus. You may register your child on-line by entering the following web address: https://www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/ez/fpc2015. In addition, you may register to volunteer online. If you have already indicated that you’d like to volunteer, you do not need to register on-line. Youth may register for the Assistant Crew Leader and Crew Leader positions as well. Those children entering 6th or 7th grades need to register as an Assistant Crew Leader. Those children entering 8th grade through 12th grade may register to be a Crew Leader. Youth volunteers are urgently needed to be Crew Leaders or assist Station Leaders. It’s a great way for youth to get any necessary volunteer hours completed, all while helping spread the Gospel. VBS would not be possible without the participation of our youth volunteers. The little children adore the teens and pre-teens! For more information about VBS 2015, email VBS 2015 Director, Colette Tschumi at: [email protected], or you may call and leave her message at the church office, 6555694. E very year we provide a teachers’ lounge in the Parlor for the volunteers! If you would like to bring treats to ensure our volunteers are well-fed, you may do so anytime during the week of VBS (June 1-4). You may bring your donations to the Big Kitchen, beginning, Sunday May 31. Bring anything you believe teenagers and adults would enjoy consuming. Savory, sweet, healthy, crunchy, crispy – it doesn’t matter! FMI, call the church office 655-5694.
