Geography revision schedule

The Park Geography Revision Schedule
1
How to do your Geography Revision
Here are some simple steps to make sure you are fully ready for your GCSE exams.
1. Make sure you have completed your Controlled Assessment to the best of your
ability. This is worth 25% of your final mark. Simple.
2. Get yourself a revision folder or book for all of the notes and case study cards you
create. Watch the videos or find your own. It all helps!
3. Stick to this revision schedule. Really make sure that you are either staying on time or
getting ahead of it. Be disciplined.
4. Remember that any work you put in now will make the exam easier and therefore less
stressful.
5. Whenever you are writing answers think SEEP (Social, Economic, Environmental,
Places), PEE (Point, Evidence, Explain) and C3 (Because, Which Means That,
Therefore). Use these structures to frame your answers. Practice these with all of the
exam spotlight questions in the revision schedule.
6. Make full use of your PLCs. Find out which bits of the course you are struggling with
and work hard on them. Tell your teacher if something is red. We can help!
7. Attend any intervention sessions which you are invited to. They will help and might
give you the extra marks you need to improve your final grade.

GEOGRAPHY GCSE Living in an Active Zone Theme 3
I can label and describe the characteristics (thickness, temperature, liquid or solid) of the structure of the
earth. (continental and oceanic crust, plates, mantle core)
I can describe the global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes in relation to the earths plate margins
I can explain how convection currents in the mantle cause the earths plates to move
I can name and describe all four plate margins with real examples (destructive, constructive, collision,
conservative) (Pacific ring of fire, Mid Atlantic Ridge, Alps/Himalayas, San Andreas Fault)
I can describe the main hazards or features at each plate margin (earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis)(Oceanic
Trench, Fold Mountains, Rift Valley)
I can draw a labelled diagram of all four types of plate margin including the direction of plate movement
I can explain in a step by step way how plate movements at each margin cause different hazards
I can explain in sequence the conditions that lead to the formation of an earthquake
I can describe the hazards associated with volcanoes (pyroclastic flow, lava, ash cloud, lahar)
I can describe the hazards associated with earthquakes (Tsunami, building collapse, fire, landslide)
I can explain at least two short term and two long term effects of tectonic hazards on people
I can explain how and why the effects of tectonic hazards vary between MEDC’s and LEDC’s
I can explain at least two reasons why people still live in areas affected by these types of hazard (inertia, jobs,
poverty, family)
Study of Iceland or Etna: tourism, geo-thermal power, mineral exploitation, highly fertile soils.
I can describe at least two methods used to predict the location of tectonic hazards (GPS, seismometers, tilt
metres, gas monitoring, animal behaviour, past activity patterns)
I can describe the methods used to prepare and protect people and buildings from tectonic hazards
(earthquake drills, family plans, emergency kits, evacuation plans, building regulations)
How the effects of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes be reduced (Shorter term - evacuation of people,
channelling lava flows, aerial bombing. Longer term - hazard mapping, new building technology, improved
emergency planning, e.g. Japan and California.)
I can explain how and why the effectiveness of these methods varies between MEDC’s and LEDC’s
I can use satellite imagery to describe distributions and patterns of tectonic hazards
I can explain the varying effects of tectonic hazards using chloropleth maps and data
I can describe the causes and impacts of an earthquake and a volcano in an MEDC (SEEP) EG Mt St
Helens/Etna/Iceland eruption or Los Angeles/Italy earthquake, Kobe
I can describe the causes and impacts of an earthquake and a volcano in an LEDC (SEEP) EG Etna eruption,
Haiti earthquake, Boxing Day Tsunami, Chile EQ, Sichuan

Short term effects such as increased incidence of storms, droughts and flood, changing
business opportunities including for agriculture.
Long term effects such as rising sea levels, changing patterns of insect borne disease, and
migration of environmental refugees
I can explain the positive of negative impacts on a local and global level of global warming
(rising sea levels, flooding, extreme weather, changing food production, spread of disease)
I can describe the responses to global warming (Kyoto, recycling, reducing carbon footprint,
carbon neutral technology, renewable energy, energy saving buildings/cities)
I can judge progress towards cutting CO2 targets for developed and developing countries
I can evaluate the sustainability of the responses to global warming EG RENEWABLES and
KYOTO
I can evaluate future scenarios and impacts of climate change with examples
I can describe and explain the effects on developing countries
I can describe and explain the effects on a developed country
I can evaluate the positive and negative impact of climate change on a range of countries
