Planting the Seeds of Change 2016 Annual Report A s Chairman of The Minneapolis Foundation’s Board of Trustees, I feel privileged to work closely with people who care so deeply about our community. We are coming off a remarkable year of celebration in honor of the Foundation’s Centennial. I was inspired by the stories I heard about the generations of donors who have helped shape our community. Their contributions reminded me of the Margaret Mead quote: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” The Minneapolis Foundation is a rallying place for individuals, families, nonprofits, business, and government leaders – all seeking somewhere to come together to change the world. Partnering with the Foundation today is truly about planting seeds of change that can have an impact now and well into the future. The Foundation is uniquely missioned and charged with ensuring the long-term vitality of our great city. We do that by supporting the generous nature of Minnesotans and by engaging directly in community issues. I thank everyone who joins us in this work. For almost a decade, we have been led by Sandra Vargas – a passionate leader who has pushed us to put our kids first and make Minneapolis a better place for them to learn, live, and grow. R.T. Rybak has just joined us as the seventh president and CEO in the Foundation’s history. R.T. has the vision, energy, and experience we need going forward as we listen to, and partner with, our community’s newest voices. As a community foundation, our role is to reflect and address the pressing needs that our city faces. While our grantmaking may be short-term to address immediate issues, our mission is long-term and is dependent on galvanizing people from across the community to come together and address chronic issues with us. While much is going well in our city today, the disparities that exist in our community are unacceptable. We can, and must, do better. For more than 100 years, the Foundation has played a critical role as a community convener – bringing diverse opinions and perspectives together to break down barriers and create solutions. I firmly believe that we must be willing to get to know one another, have a desire to work together and maintain a commitment to respect diverse perspectives in order to solve the problems our community faces. We can – and must – pivot to the solutions together. Minneapolis is fortunate to have a long philanthropic history. That historic spirit of generosity is alive and well today, and the Foundation is uniquely designed to help donors make their giving go further. It is our privilege to honor the unique philanthropic dreams of our donors and support their individual giving priorities. In this report, you’ll find examples of how we do that in every corner of our community, with a broad spectrum of partners. I hope you will join us in this important work. My kids and grandkids – and yours – deserve to live in a community as blessed as the one I have enjoyed. Minneapolis is a great place. Let’s make it even better – for EVERYONE! Visitors will stop and smell the flowers in a demonstration garden as they learn about bee-friendly blooms they can plant in their own backyards. They’ll hear winged workers abuzz in hives that University of Minnesota researchers will use to study bees. They’ll taste the results, sampling honey made from different kinds of flowers. And in the center’s Honey House, they’ll see up close how honey is extracted from honeycomb. The Honey House was built with help from a grant that Helen and Gary Bergren made from their Donor Advised Fund at The Minneapolis Foundation. For the Bergrens, investing in the new bee center is a way not only to engage visitors in the lives of bees, but to motivate the next generation to help address the challenges facing pollinators. “Anything we can do to make the arboretum a bigger, better place to attract and inform more children is a very good thing,” Gary said. It’s also a deeply personal gift. The Bergrens are supporting the Honey House in honor of their four grandchildren, who have been coming to the arboretum since they were babies to explore, play, and celebrate birthdays. “They literally learned to walk here,” Helen said. Now, she said, “they’re interested in science and education, and we couldn’t think of a better way to keep this family tradition going.” 6 7 A RT S & C U LT U R E Setting the Stage for Future Generations For John and Jean Geisler, doing good has been a long-time family affair. The Geislers, who have a Donor Advised Fund at The Minneapolis Foundation, recently decided to involve their three daughters in their philanthropy. To get started, they had a family meeting facilitated by their Philanthropic Advisor. “We’ve always believed in the impact philanthropy can have, and we wanted our girls to experience it firsthand,” John said. The couple asked their daughters to work individually with their Advisor to define a charitable goal and research organizations to support. The only condition was the girls also had to get involved with the organization. “Giving the dollars is one thing,” John explained. “But when you get involved, you have a chance to see the impact.” Liz, their middle daughter, is thankful that her parents exposed her to many different arts experiences as a kid: “I know there are many kids out there who never get that chance.” Liz set a goal of providing an arts experience to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have it. With help from her Advisor, she found Minneapolis College Prep, a charter school in North Minneapolis. The school, serving mostly lowincome students of color, did not have much extracurricular programming. “As soon as we talked with the principal and met the kids, it was obvious that this was such a great school and they could really benefit from having an arts education,” Liz said. Together, Liz and her parents made sure that the students got that chance. With their support, the high school entered into a partnership with the Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts to begin a theatre program. When the students prepared for their end-of-year performance, Liz created costumes for the performers. She attended the show with her dad and one of her sisters. “I don’t know if there are words to describe how it felt to see the kids perform,” she said. Once-shy students sang solos, found rhythm on the drums, and hit all the right notes on the piano. And Liz learned a valuable lesson: “Have a goal for your giving.” 8 9 CO M M U N I T Y H E A LT H Cultivating Support for Mental Health Services Every fall, the emerging philanthropists of Fourth Generation vote to choose a community issue that they spend the year researching together. Last year, they picked a topic that touches many: mental health. “The need for mental health services is overwhelming, it’s underfunded, and there’s a lot of great work being done to address these issues by organizations in Minnesota,” said Julia Quanrud, a former Fourth Generation chair. Members of Fourth Generation, a program of The Minneapolis Foundation, work together to learn the skills of strategic giving. They visit nonprofits, organize a fundraiser, pool their own donations with contributions from other community members, and make grants to local organizations. The group has tackled issues such as youth homelessness, small business development, and services for aging Minnesotans. “Fourth Generation gives me the opportunity to learn about community issues that I’m less familiar with,” said member Rebecca Stibbe. The stigma attached to mental illnesses is one reason that services addressing them are underfunded, said Wendy Wells, who became passionate about the issue after a mental illness struck one of her family members: “My hope is that, someday, mental illness will be considered like any other disease.” So Wells jumped at the chance to support Fourth Generation’s interest in the issue by recommending a grant to the group from her fund at The Minneapolis Foundation. When the group chose mental health, “I think we initially thought that we’d fund direct services,” Stibbe said, “but we learned that many direct services are funded by the government or health insurance.” Instead, the group identified other important activities to support, including mental health advocacy and services for people with a mental illness who don’t qualify for government assistance. The nonprofits that Fourth Generation ultimately supported ranged from the Walk-In Counseling Center to the Ars Bellum Foundation, which provides clinical art therapy to veterans. All told, the group granted $50,000 to seven organizations. As Stibbe pointed out, that’s far more than she could give on her own. With Fourth Generation, “I can pool my resources with others and make a bigger difference than I could alone.” 10 11 E D U CAT I O N Child Care That Plants Seeds of Success Child care is often regarded as a service that enables parents to work. At Baby’s Space, it’s much more. Baby’s Space serves Little Earth, an American Indian housing development in Minneapolis. The center was started not only to provide excellent child care, but to catalyze change in a high-poverty community. “We work with the whole family around whatever struggles they’re having,” said Debbie Lund, executive director of Baby’s Space. All babies need warm, consistent relationships with adults, and Baby’s Space staff nurtures those ties at the center – but they also help parents strengthen them at home. “We’ve learned that standing in front of a group of parents and teaching them does not work,” Lund said. Instead, Baby’s Space attracts parents with muffins on Mondays and scrapbooking sessions where they talk about challenges informally. On Fridays, all the children – even the infants – get “homework” that families complete together. “Baby’s Space prepares kids for success in a way that most daycares don’t,” said Kathy Gullickson, whose family has supported the organization through their fund at The Minneapolis Foundation. When Minneapolis Public Schools recently screened the 3- to 5-year-olds at Baby’s Space, all were developmentally on track for kindergarten. Baby’s Space staff are trained in best practices for early learning, but they also understand how trauma affects kids – critical knowledge in this community. The center has helped families respond to problems ranging from heroin addiction to area shootings. Staff members rely on their relationships with families to understand what’s going on at home, and how that influences their children’s behavior. “Behind every tear and temper tantrum, there’s something they’re trying to let us know,” Lund said. Knowing the value of cultural competence, Baby’s Space recruits employees from Little Earth, giving the children local role models and enabling staff members like Yolanda M. Reyes to make a difference far beyond child care. When parents need a ride to a job interview, for example, she’s there. “Wherever they need to go to meet their goals, that’s where we’re going to be,” Reyes said. 12 13 E CO N O M I C V I TA L I T Y Building a Company from the Ground Up LaMont Bowens has always had a passion for construction. By the time he was 19, he was renovating houses. When he moved to Minnesota, he started as a carpenter. To advance his career, Bowens enrolled in construction management at North Hennepin Community College. For two years, he took night classes while working on projects like the new Vikings stadium. When he graduated, he interned as a field engineer with Mortenson Construction. By then, Bowens knew that he wanted to start his own construction business, but there were barriers. “The most challenging part was not having the money to finance a contract,” he said. “I had the mindset and the skills of a large general contractor, but I didn’t have the money.” Bowens got help from the Northside Economic Opportunity Network. NEON, a nonprofit supported by The Minneapolis Foundation, helps low- and moderate-income entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. “We started working with LaMont when he was in the early stage of envisioning his business,” said NEON President Marcus Owens. “After completing our entrepreneur training and working with our Business Advisor one-on-one to refine his business plan, he worked hard and was committed to making his plan a reality.” With help from NEON, Bowens got a loan of $8,000 from the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers that enabled his company to make payroll and cover other costs as it took on its first contract. It was a small sum that Bowens repaid in just 30 days, but it made, he said, “a big difference.” Since then, Bowens Companies has tackled projects all over the metro, from Medtronic to the Mall of America. In a twist of fate, the company also landed at The Minneapolis Foundation this spring, taking charge of demolition and clean up as a subcontractor on the Foundation’s office renovation. “When small businesses grow, their success has ripple effects that benefit the whole community,” said Colleen Byrne, the Foundation’s business services manager. “I love to see the Foundation being part of that process.” 14 15 C I V I C E N GAG E M E N T Nonprofit Leaders Team up to Grow Resources in the Somali Community On a spring day just before Ramadan, the staff and volunteers of a South Minneapolis nonprofit helped women carry bags of bread, cauliflower, and watermelons from a warehouse they’d recently transformed into the city’s newest food shelf. Run by Isuroon, an organization that promotes the well-being and empowerment of Somali women, the food shelf is just one way that Somali-led nonprofits are addressing needs and strengthening ties, within and beyond their community. Given the poverty of Minnesota’s Somali community, this food is needed. But Isuroon’s vision is much larger. As executive director Fartun Weli explained, the food shelf is part of the concept for a community space where she hopes Somali Minnesotans will someday gather for everything from social events to immunizations – “to connect to existing services, build resilience, and identify community priorities.” Weli believes that no one is better positioned to address challenges facing the Somali community than Somali Minnesotans themselves. But Isuroon operates on a shoestring budget, and she knows that realizing the nonprofit’s vision will take teamwork. That philosophy drives the Coalition of Minnesota African Leaders, an initiative seeded by The Minneapolis Foundation in response to needs expressed by Somali leaders. Facilitated by Hamse Warfa, a consultant and former program officer at a private foundation, the coalition includes Weli and seven other Somali nonprofit leaders. Warfa is helping them grow the capacity of their organizations, increase their collaboration, advocate for better public policies, and learn how to navigate systems that pose barriers. The coalition is also closing gaps between Somali-led nonprofits and larger “mainstream” organizations, with Warfa acting as a cultural broker on projects such as Isuroon’s food shelf. After Weli told him about the food shelf, which Isuroon had been trying to open for two-and-a-half years, Warfa reached out to Second Harvest Heartland, a large Minnesota-based food bank. Second Harvest agreed not only to provide food for the new food shelf, but also to help Isuroon with its fundraising strategy. Both partners bring something to the table. Second Harvest has a lot to learn from Isuroon, said Michelle Heerey, the food bank’s director of Field Services. “They’re the experts in terms of serving the Somali community.” 16 Consolidated Statement of Activities* As of March 31, 2016 Unrestricted REVENUES, GAINS, AND OTHER SUPPORT Total Amount Raised Less: Amounts Received for Benefits of Others Contributions, Net Total Investment Income, Net of Investment Expenses Less: Investment Income from Charitable Funds Held for Benefit of Others Investment Income, Net Change in Value of Trusts Administrative Service Revenue from Agency Funds and Private Foundations Note Receivable Interest and Other Income Net Assets Released from Restrictions Total Revenues, Gains, and Other Support Temporarily Restricted Permanently Restricted - $ 54,147,883 4,967,829 49,180,054 (18,934,127) (2,142,446) (275,410) (1,493,845) (973,525) (17,960,602) (1,769,255) 446,545 3,562,208 5,459,654 41,481,157 12,098 (5,459,654) (6,516,264) (1,493,845) 446,545 3,574,306 33,471,048 57,471,570 1,162,790 56,308,780 7,657,835 - - 57,471,570 1,162,790 56,308,780 7,657,835 2,783,279 2,089,040 68,838,934 - - 2,783,279 2,089,040 68,838,934 CHANGE IN NET ASSETS (27,357,777) (6,516,264) (1,493,845) (35,367,886) Net Assets - Beginning of Year 546,461,434 73,258,731 35,968,696 655,688,861 $519,103,657 $66,742,467 $34,474,851 $620,320,975 EXPENSES Program Services: Total Grants Less: Grants Made for Benefit of Charitable Funds Held Grants Program Service Expense Support Services Expense: Management and General Administrative Fund Raising Total Expenses NET ASSETS - END OF YEAR $ 52,798,735 4,967,829 47,830,906 (16,791,681) $ 1,349,148 1,349,148 (2,142,446) (973,525) (15,818,156) - $ 2016 Total The complete audited financials and accompanying notes are available for review by emailing: [email protected] 17 Consolidated Statement of Financial Position* As of March 31, 2016 (end of fiscal year) 2016 2015 ASSETS Cash and Cash Equivalents $ 13,224,448 $ 12,385,347 Interest and Dividends Receivable 870,290 938,892 Accounts Receivable 972,374 1,365,616 71,089 159,316 551,181,959 577,657,083 Prepaids Investments Other Assets 2,127,096 2,163,188 Loans Receivable, Net 19,610,515 19,676,941 Notes Receivable 42,495,212 44,084,721 Beneficial Interest in Trusts 48,369,106 50,772,498 653,617 150,289 Furniture, Fixtures, Equipment, and Leasehold Improvements (Less Accumulated Depreciation of $2,682,705 and $3,078,747 as of March 31, 2016 and 2015, Respectively) Total Assets $679,575,706 $709,353,891 $2,070,400 $1,146,452 Grants Payable 4,312,159 4,548,350 Notes Payable 12,273,346 12,246,586 480,706 39,886 Amounts Due Beneficiaries 14,031,831 12,254,583 Charitable Funds Held for the Benefit of Others 26,086,289 23,429,173 59,254,731 53,665,030 519,103,657 546,461,434 Temporarily Restricted 66,742,467 73,258,731 Permanently Restricted 34,474,851 35,968,696 Total Net Assets 620,320,975 655,688,861 $679,575,706 $709,353,891 LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS LIABILITIES Accounts Payable and Accrued Liabilities Deferred Lease Credits Total Liabilities NET ASSETS Unrestricted Total Liabilities and Net Assets *Note that the financial statements are prepared on an accrual basis in accordance with GAAP. 18 Fund Types Donor Advised Funds These funds enable donors to make a charitable gift, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. They are established by individuals, families, foundations, or businesses that value administrative ease and cost efficiency, but still want to be actively involved in the grantmaking process. Contributions to these funds are tax-deductible, but there are no IRS regulations about when dollars need to be distributed. Donor Advised Funds are often the right answer for: people selling a business or facing a liquidity or tax issue; individuals who require due diligence before selecting charitable recipients; donors who want to involve other family members in decision-making; and folks who wish to make their gifts anonymously. ota Minnes Grown A community foundation reflects the diversity of donors’ interests and passions. Donors at The Minneapolis Foundation can select from a variety of fund types to turn their charitable dreams into reality. By administering these funds, the Foundation is proud to support the generous individuals who are responding to the community needs of today and tomorrow. Seeds Supporting Organizations ota Minnes Grown A tax-wise and potentially less restrictive alternative to a private foundation, Supporting Organizations enable donors to hire staff and convene a board. The Minneapolis Foundation handles all administrative and grantmaking oversight, including IRS-mandated tax returns and annual audits. Supporting Organizations are individual 501(c)(3) public charities under Section 509(a)(3) of the tax code and should have assets of at least $5 million. Although they have their own tax ID number and donations receive the maximum level of tax deductions, each Supporting Organization is covered by the umbrella of the community foundation, and its grants and activities must fulfill and support the charitable purposes of The Minneapolis Foundation.
