For the Mathias Fa
mily, the Night of
Broken Glass
was a tragedy they
will never forget.
On the evening of
November 9, 1938
, Sid Mathias’
father, Ernest, was
arrested by Nazi G
estapo Agents
in Germany. He w
as sent to the Buche
nwald
concentration camp.
Through the exhaus
tive efforts of Sid’s
mother and
uncle, they were ab
le to secure safe pa
ssage for Ernest
to America. Ernest
escaped Germany on
the last ship
crossing the Atlanti
c before the start of
World War II.
Unfortunately, the
rest of Sid’s family
was murdered.
