• The protective power of parents and positive family
relationships;

Afternoon Session: Why Do They Act That Way?
A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain
For parents and professionals
working with preteens and teenagers

brain on the path from childhood into adulthood. Revealing the
latest scientific findings in easy-to-understand terms, she will
show why moodiness, quickness to anger, willingness to take
risks, miscommunication and other familiar teenage behavior
are so common-all are linked to physical changes and growth in
the adolescent brain. Erin will show how parents and anyone
who works with youth how to this information can help us
protect young people from risks and help them build on their
strengths. Erin will touch on the following topics:
• The major construction zones in the teenage brain;
• Communication and power struggles;
• Sex, drugs, and alcohol; • Digital media and the teen brain;
• A balanced approach to parenting.
