Comprehension
Student Prompt: “I will read a story to you.”
How the Firefly Got Its Light
(Adapted from www.teacher.depaul.edu )
This is a story about long ago. There was a little fly. It wanted to be special. The fly
was sad. It did not feel special. It looked at the bee and thought it was great. “Look how
big it is. Hear it buzz.” It looked at the butterfly and said, “See how pretty. Look at the
colors. Look at its big wings. But I am just like all the other flies.”
The fly stayed awake one night. It was worried. It was sad. All the other flies were
sleeping. A moth was awake. So was a mouse. They did not notice the fly. It was too
small. It was hard to see in the dark.
The fly saw the stars. They were shining. “I want to shine like that. That would be
special.”
The moon heard the fly. The moon said, “Little fly. You can help me. If you do, I will
help you. I will make you shine.”
“How can I help?”
The moon said, “You can be my friend. I am lonely at night. I come out when it is
dark. Most animals are asleep. If you stay awake every night I will help you shine. You
can be my friend.”
“Yes, yes,” the fly said. “I will stay awake every night. I would love to be your
friend.”
The next night, the fly stayed awake. And the next night…and the next night...and
the next night…
The moon became friends with fly. So the moon told fly the secret of how to shine.
Fly used the secret. It worked! Fly was shining. Fly could make its body shine on and off.
It looked like magic.
The fly was very glad. The fly told the moon, “I will always be your friend. When you
come out at night, I will be here. I will shine my light to welcome you.” As the fly went
to sleep he thought, “Finally, now I’m special too.”
Fly not only had something special. He also had a friend.

Penguins
(Adapted from www.teacher.depaul.edu)
The penguin is a bird, but it does not fly. Penguins
are not like other birds. They are unique or
different birds. Although they do have feathers,
even their feathers are unique. A penguin’s
feathers grow all over, like hair on an animal. The
feathers make the penguin look like he has on
clothes like a tuxedo. Do these penguins look like
they have on a tuxedo?
You will not see penguins in the air, and you will not see them in
trees. Penguins like to spend most of their time in the water. They are
strong swimmers. Penguins get their food from the water. But they do not
have any teeth. They just swallow their food without chewing. Would you
make a good penguin?

Phonemic Awareness - Segmenting Phonemes in Words
Student Prompt: “I am going to tell you a word. You are going to say the sounds in the
word. For example, if I say ‘mom’, you would say, /m/ /o/ /m/.” If the student
responds differently, ask them to listen again. “‘Sat’ has the sounds /s/ /a/ /t/. Now
you tell me the sounds in ‘sat’.” Continue with assessment if child responds correctly or
incorrectly. Say the stimulus and pause 4 seconds for a response each time you give the
word. Consider response as incorrect if student does not respond in 4 seconds or
replies with a different response. (RF.K.2d) DOK 1
Indicate YES for a correct response and NO for an incorrect response in the box to the
right of the word on the form below.
