Missouri Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Conference 2015

Missouri Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
Conference 2015
June 2, 2015
The University of Missouri Campus, Cornell Hall | Columbia, Missouri
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On June 2, 2015, the Missouri State CIT Council in collaboration with the Missouri Coalition for Community Behavioral
Healthcare will host the first annual Missouri State CIT Conference at Cornell Hall on the University of Missouri campus
in Columbia, Missouri. This conference is open to all law enforcement officers, mental health professionals, students,
etc., and anyone with an interest in the adoption, adaptation, and development of CIT programs in their local
communities. Conference seminar sessions will be POST approved for law enforcement.
WHAT IS CIT?
CIT stands for Crisis Intervention Team, and is represented by police officers who have received a comprehensive 40hour training in the areas of mental illness, crisis response, active listening, tactical communication/de-escalation, and
mental health law. CIT officers are equipped with basic assessment skills for handling situations involving subjects in
mental or emotional crisis, and are provided with knowledge of area mental and behavioral health service providers
who may provide the most appropriate type of treatment for that mental health consumer.
CIT serves as both a jail diversion as well as a “fast-track” to immediate mental health assistance for those in crisis who
do not meet the criteria for an arrest on a criminal charge. It was developed in Memphis, Tennessee, in the late 1990s
and has since been adopted by law enforcement agencies around the world. Regional CIT councils, comprised of
representatives from various stakeholders in the mental health and law enforcement industries in their local
communities, serve as advisors to the programs locally and help to coordinate CIT trainings for area law enforcement
personnel.
