Holocaust Ambassadors - Windsor Girls` School

Windsor Girls’ School
21 April 2017
Holocaust Ambassadors
This week, two Year 12 students, Hollie Parker and Caterina Magenes, completed their final
assessment to become National Holocaust Ambassadors. Hollie and Caterina visited Auschwitz
in February of this year as part of a Holocaust Education Trust Leadership Programme. They
have now completed written reports of their experiences and this week they gave a presentation
in assembly to fellow students about their trip. As Ambassadors, their role is to share what they
saw first-hand and to promote tolerance and understanding in the future. Their assembly was
thought provoking and showed what a memorable experience this has been for them.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 5. I hope you all had a good break and some time together over last
weekend. All terms in school are important, but this term really marks the final push towards
examination preparation. Controlled Assessments and coursework are being marked, moderated
and sent to the examiners. Courses and specifications are being completed as teachers and
students shift their learning to focus on revision of topics and examination technique. Over the
Easter holiday, many colleagues were in school with students working to support them in their
preparations. This was great to see and I am sure that the students appreciated the time and
effort.
This term, the LORIC skill we are focusing on is organisation. This is crucial at this stage of the
year and important for all young people as they develop into their adult life. Assemblies next
week will be focusing on this skill and our next Community Week will also be sharing strategies
for how to be more organised.
On Wednesday 26 April, we will be holding our next Windsor Teaching Alliance open morning.
Please share this information if you are aware of anyone who is interested in becoming a
teacher. The purpose of the morning will be to find out more information and to meet with current
trainees and staff who will be happy to answer any questions. We are very proud of our
programme which has led to the appointment of some outstanding teachers across Windsor
Learning Partnership.
As you will have seen when you have visited the school this week, the building work is making
good progress. The demolition of the old kitchen and the new foundations have now been
completed and we are poised to start the construction of the four new classrooms. The kitchen
will move into its new location in the next few weeks and we look forward to sharing the latest
developments over the coming months. You will also note the photographs of the new picnic
tables, purchased with the prize money from Youth Choice, Youth Voice. Students are enjoying
the additional outside space, hopefully the sun will follow.
Mrs G. Labrum
Sixth Form
Year Information
The focus of the term is organisation. As you will be aware this is one of the
key LORIC skills. It is particularly important in the build up to the summer
examinations.
You will see the Extra Curricular Programme attached to this Newsletter.
Year 9
The winning Mock Magistrate Competition team will be taking part in the
regional final on 13 May. The team has to prepare for a whole new case
and will be working with a visiting magistrate on Friday 28 April, during
Periods 3 and 4 in Room 63.
Year 10
Year 10 will be receiving their full written report next week. This will have data
and comments from individual subject teachers. If there are any queries,
please contact the subject teacher in the first instance.
The next Duke of Edinburgh cohort will be completing their expedition this
weekend. Good luck to all participants.
Year 11
There will be a range of revision sessions taking place across the next week
for Year 11 students. The focus for English will be on ‘An Inspector Calls’ and
will take place during registration, in Room 63. Students will be advised which
session to attend.
Further revision sessions will be taking place across different subject areas
and students are reminded to check with their teachers to find out when these
are happening.
If there are any changes to Sixth Form Options please can these be directed
to Mrs Reed in the Sixth Form Office.
Examinations are
approaching. However, the
number of students sitting
AS examinations is much
reduced this year due to
the introduction of the new
A-Level specifications
which encourage students
to take terminal
examinations. For this
reason, the Year 12
timetable will continue as
normal during the
examination period.
If there are any students
who have not yet confirmed
their university choices for
September, this needs to
be done as soon as
possible. Students looking
to complete an
apprenticeship are also
urged to register at https://
www.gov.uk/applyapprenticeship as popular
placements will fill up
quickly.
Following this week’s
announcement of the
upcoming General
Election, we are aware that
the majority of our Year 13
students will be first time
voters in a General
Election. The following
website allows you to
answer questions related to
policy to inform your
decision of who to vote for:
http://uk.isidewith.com/.
Remember, you need to
register to vote by 22 May
2017 using the following
link. https://www.gov.uk/

Science Club
Sweet chocolate activity in Science club!
Students got into the spirit of Easter by
simulating the rock cycle with chocolate instead
of using actual rock.
Students ground chocolate into small particles
(weathered), heated, cooled, and compressed it
– just like the process that happens to rocks
over millions of years.
Unlike rocks, the
chocolate that we used underwent these
processes
safely
and
at
reasonable
temperatures.
It was great to use chocolate to create
sedimentary,
metamorphic
and
igneous
chocolate and to learn more about how these
different types of rocks form.
“At the end of it all we made a lovely, tasty treat!”
said, Amber Atkinson and Freya Burton.
