Muskegon Northside Lions Club THE LIONS TALe December 2014 Vol XXXVI Issue 6 We Serve From the desk of President Lion Frank Krol Hello Lions, The November 11th Northside Lions meeting was a great success due a lot of Northside Lions support and EXTRA EFFORT from Lion ED WEESSIES! Lion Ed was the lion of the hour for organizing and implementing for all the Lions Clubs (9 in total) plus served as chauffeur, social director, room set-up, and a well prepared agenda >> THANK YOU LION ED! speeches, would have been good to hear what each was going to say but this is indeed Michigan and you can never count on the weather cooperating. It was a red letter day for our club, not only hearing the comments made in our regard, but also having PIP Sid Scruggs and Judy with us for this event and also at our meeting that night. It was also good to have the other clubs in attendance as well. The work on the Causeway is now in the hands of the professionals but come spring time we can surely create some other projects within the park to keep us busy. We still have some work to do on our calendar project; the earlier start has given us a real boost. We still have about 390 calendars in the hands of our members, please make every effort to sell your 10, this will lessen the task of selling by the members who go way beyond their original 10. We have a couple of great traditional events coming up in December you really don’t want to miss: >> Dec. 2nd Northside Lions Christmas Party My knee is on the mend, did not anticipate this much A special program that is going to be fun for all in participating in recovery time but then again, it is my first replacement a MYSTERY DINNER!! (see Lion Jan & Pat for details) surgery (and hopefully my last!) Thanks once again for all your concerns on my behalf. >> Dec. 7th Kids Christmas Shopping Day This has always been a great experience to help young people Until next month, PID Dennis in our community. We take these young people shopping for gifts for family members with a cash contribution from Northside Lions. We all return to our meeting hall and help them gift wrap An Editorial by: all their selections followed by a Pizza Party (see Lion Deb & Barb for details) Lion Ed Weessies, PCST 2015 USA/Canada Lions Forum will be held in Grand Rapids, MI on Sept. 15-19th. This will be bringing in hundreds and hundreds of Lions to our nearby partners. Committees are being formed now and they have asked for our help --- our ‘front man’ is Lion JIM WOLFFIS. Lion Jim has a complete list of needs by days of Tuesday thru Saturday. As more details arrive, Lion Jim will be asking you to help serve these requests. Let’s continue our proud motto >> We Serve Lion Frank Krol Lions Tale Editor Fellow Lions, Please keep in mind those Lions and their family members who are in ill health, recovering from surgeries or have lost loved ones. Also keep in your thoughts those members, for whatever reasons, have not been in attendance or working on projects. They need our support as much as we need them. November was an exciting month for Northside Lions, especially having the honor to host the visit of Past International President Sid Scruggs and his wife Lion Judy. What classy Lions and great representatives of Lions Hello Lions: worldwide. Thanks to Past International Director Dennis Cobler for making the arraignments for the visits of Past Well the day finally arrived where the public International Presidents Jimmy Ross and Sid Scruggs to be learned what the Northside Lions have known special guests at our club meetings. What an honor. for months, we have a very large amount of We Northside Lions have so much to be proud of. The work money coming into the Veterans Park. The November 11th members have been doing to improve conditions on the event at the Causeway drew a very decent crowd considering Veterans’ Memorial Causeway in both leadership roles and the lousy weather and after the veteran’s portion was over all of physically working there. With that leadership the the partners in this terrific venture got to speak to their “Causeway” will once again be Michigan’s most beautiful involvement. The heavy rain curtailed the length of the mile. From the desk of Lion Dennis Cobler, PID Page 1 of 8 Copyright © 2014 Muskegon Northside Lions Club www.muskegonnorthsidelions.org Muskegon Northside Lions Club THE LIONS TALe December 2014 Vol XXXVI Issue 6 The sale of our raffle calendar is an important one. The funds raised do much for those in need in the name of Lions. Please do your part in selling calendars. They make great gifts too. PLEASE have your calendars sold, sales cards and money turned into Lion Dennis Cobler by December 15 so that we will be ready for the 2015 drawings. My message would not be complete without the mention of membership. Our strength is in our numbers. For various reasons our members cannot always take part in all of our projects thus the need for a larger group to get things done. We do not have that much to do at this time of the year but we do need active Lions. PIP Scruggs installed three new members those being Lions Tom DeVries, Connie Lewis and Cynthia Williams. What an honor for them. At our second meeting this month we hope to install Myra Dutton. There still are several new vests to be filled though. We do have several members who have left or will be leaving for warmer climates. I hope to be escaping in January for a couple of months but will be reporting from Florida. I hope to visit some Lions clubs I have yet to see. For those who remain behind, be safe! Log fires in the fire place, on those cold winter nights. The red berries of the holly, in that arrangement on the table. Which I'm sure is much better, then Christmas in that stable. The smell of Christmas goodies, that are baked with tender care. The smell is just the greatest, there's nothing to compare. Poinsettia's all around, to balance off the garland. Music boxes everyplace, bought by my sweet darlin'. The evergreen's so fragrant, the smell of Christmas season. Like the hanging of mistletoe, thats done for a good reason. Cinnamon and Peppermint, fills the air thats in our house. And what is stirring in the night, is not the Christmas mouse. (1932) Dates to Remember: Dec 2 Christmas Party Dec 7 Kid’s Christmas shopping New Years Eve 'Christmas Bells' poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till, ringing, singing on its way The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The Carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Page 6 of 8 Copyright © 2014 Muskegon Northside Lions Club And in despair I bowed my head; ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said; ‘For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!’ Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ‘God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
