Recipe: sugar skull cookies Release your inner artist and go to town decorating these delicious sugar skull cookies, reminiscent of the authentic Mexican sugar skulls used to celebrate Day of the Dead. Ingredients • 250g/9oz plain flour 200g/7oz butter, cut into small cubes 100g/3½oz icing sugar Zest of one orange 2 free-range egg yolks Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3. 2. Place the flour, butter, icing sugar and salt into a bowl. Using your fingertips, rub the ingredients together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs (or use a food processor). 3. Add the egg yolks and orange zest and mix until a dough forms. Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll out to a thickness of about 0.5cm/¼in. Cut out shapes using a skull cutter. 4. Place all the skulls on a baking tray. 5. Bake the cookie skulls for 10-12 minutes, or until light golden-brown and crisp. Remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool. 6. Using rolled icing, royal icing, coloured icing, chocolate and sweets in any combination - decorate the skulls to create a range of fabulous characters. 7. Enjoy!
