Program Director Carol Jacobs-Courtz 2 NOVEMBER 2014 NEWSETTE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to all from Albuquerque, New Mexico and welcome to the tenth month of the year and one of seven months with a length of 31 days. In the old Roman calendar, October retained its name (from the Latin octo meaning eight ) after January and February were inserted into the calendar. October is commonly associated with the season of autumn and of Allhallowtide (All Hallows Eve - Halloween). The last week in October is the only time of the year during which all four major North American professional sports leagues schedule games: the National Basketball Assoc. generally begins its regular season at this time, the National Hockey League is about one month into its regular season, the National Football League is about halfway through its regular season, and Major League Baseball concludes its postseason with the World Series. Among the month's celebrations are: National Pizza Month; National Popcorn Popping Month; Cookie Month; and Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. October is also the health conscience month of Breast Cancer Awareness and National Diabetes. And what better way to usher in the month of October than with the celebration of Oktoberfest. It begins on the third weekend of September and ends on the first Sunday In October. The biggest celebration takes place in Munich, Germany, where the tradition goes back 200 years and where over 6 million people descend on the tented fairgrounds to drink massive 16 ounce glasses of beer and eat smoked meat and sausages. Because there is a ban on music over 85 decibels being played before 6:00pm, all must wait for the jamming to begin. There are Oktoberfest celebrations right here so!!!!!!!!go out, lift your steins and celebrate this happy event . A great time was had by all who came to the Mariachi Nueva Generation event. All joined in on singing some of the songs and dancing was a must. Our Monday Night Bingo was also a success as was our monthly Sunday dance. The trip to the Skunk Train was enjoyed by all and the tour of the Levi 49er stadium was the greatest. This is probably the only way we will ever be able to see inside this unbelievably well-designed high-tech stadium. The prices are geared for those who don't blink at paying $10.25 for a bottle of water and who can afford $80,000 for a seat on the 50 yard line. For me, although I miss the thrill of being there, it makes my sandwich and Pepsi in front of the TV much more enjoyable. PHONE: (415) 485-3348 All our trips mentioned in last month’s newsletter are in need of more sign-ups with the exception of Beach Blanket Babylon. In fact, some are close to being cancelled if the sign-up does not increase. So, sign-up now if you are thinking of going on one of the trips during the next 2 months. Also, mark your calendar for our Holiday Dinner Dance on December 12th and join in celebrating the holiday season. And if you want a great breakfast join in Breakfast with Santa the next morning, 12/13. A reminder that the Senior Information Fair is coming up on October 22nd and if you haven't already gotten your flu shot you can get it there. Also, our Craft Fair is on 11/7 and Lorraine needs any new items you can donate for the baskets she assembles. And now is the time to start baking for our bakery booth. It is ALWAYS our biggest seller at the Fair. Dodie will be popping popcorn and handing out water for Thursday's movie, Las Vegas, on 10/23 and Barbara Nelson of San Marin Travel will be discussing new procedures onboard cruise ships and other travel issues at the Community Center on Tuesday, 10/14, at 1:00pm. Also, don’t forget that at the October 29th General Meeting, the slate of officers for 2015-2016 will be presented for a vote: Please see details under the General Meeting announcement on Page 4. We encourage all members to attend and support your club! It is time to close my letter, as well as my eyes, as I will be rising up at 6:00am tomorrow to join the Dawn Patrol watching the lift-off of the balloons. Hopefully I will be able to keep my head from falling in my dinner plate tomorrow night!!!!!!!!! Until next month I leave you with the words of Charles Schulz: "all you need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt." Joanne MARIA MURANO JANE CREIGHTON DIANA KING NANCY FISHER SUE SCHENDEL ANNE McELFRESH DICK VERLING NSHAN SHIRABAD LOIS McLEAN VARSENIG THRONE KAREN TORNEY Please give a warm welcome to our newest members.
