ORANGE CRUSH© (Black Licorice, Pink Lemonade, etc) by Debby Kratovil Choose your favorite colors for a two color quilt! This is NOT paper piecing! This uses a supersized 18 degree ruler (Dresden Plate shape) with a 12-1/2” height. For Orange Crush we focus on the 60” markings to cut the steep angles. The cutaway triangles are not thrown away but are swapped and used with the mirror image main patch. This is pieced in four sections, which are interfaced to turn the curved edge and then zig zag appliqued to 15” background squares. Four squares comprise the center 30” block. The center circle is added last, also interfaced for ease of turning. Orange Crush: 41” x 41” (30” block) Students will learn: -- how to cut wedges using the 12-1/2” ruler with no waste -- how to cut the 60 degree angle forming the blade tips, using the lines on the ruler -- how to turn curved edges using interfacing -- simple zig zag machine applique to stitch the fan wedges to background squares -- how to use this versatile ruler for other projects The kit fee of $25 includes the multi-sized Vortex/Dresden Plate ruler (12-1/2” ), along with a FULL COLOR multi-page, well illustrated pattern with clear instructions for completing this project. AND a 4-1/2" square to interface center circle • 45" square (or larger) of backing fabric – this may be pieced • Low-loft batting, 45" square (or larger Please bring: sewing machine, thread, rotary cutter, cutting mat and if possible a 16-1/2” square ruler. If you don’t have one, bring a 12-1/2” square ruler, as well as a long 6” x 24” ruler. These are big blocks! Black Licorice Block Black Licorice is a variation of Orange Crush where the positive/negative effect of the colors spins throughout the block. Orange Crush “changes direction” midway through the circle (note the solid white top unit and orange bottom unit). For Black Licorice, you will need TWO 12-1/2” strips of EACH of the two colors (not one as in Orange Crush). You will then be cutting and piecing for two blocks to get one. If you want a two block quilt, increase the other supporting fabrics accordingly.
