ACTIVITY 4: Table Completion
Read the following extract and fill in the gaps in the table below.
The four longest rivers in the world are located in four different continents.
That, at least, is undisputed. However, while most scientists agree on the
order, it is difficult to accurately measure the length of such enormous rivers,
and there is also sometimes disagreement on where a river actually starts
and finishes. The Nile, beginning at Lake Victoria, is Africa’s longest river,
negotiating its 6,650-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean Sea through
land which has been used continuously for over 6,000 years.
The Amazon, in South America, is the largest but not the longest river,
starting high in the Peruvian Andes and flowing for much of its 6,400kilometre length parallel to and not far from the Equator, eventually emptying
into the Atlantic Ocean.
The Yangtze, with its source in the Kunlun Mountains of Tibet, is China’s
most important internal waterway and travels 6,300 kilometres to the Yellow
Sea.
The fourth longest river of the world is the Mississippi-Missouri, the source
of which was not discovered until 1832, when it was traced to Lake Itasca
in Minnesota. It deposits rich silt in the delta where it ends its 6,275- kilometre
journey and flows into the Gulf of Mexico.
