THINK QUEST
Automated Version
(A Team Quiz Competition)
OBJECTIVES
1. Encourage students to expand their knowledge while having fun;
2. Promote greater interest and appreciation of the courses in the different
programs of study;
3. Provide students with an opportunity to work in a team towards a common
goal; and
4. Identify and recognize students who exhibit exemplary performance in quiz
competition.
THE COMPETITION
The Think Quest is a quiz competition participated in by teams of students with
exemplary knowledge on various disciplines and their applications. It is an event
to watch as students are expected to display their ingenuity, analytical ability and
knowledge.
The competition is divided into three rounds: ONCE AND FOR ALL, DOUBLE THE
FUN and TRIPLE TREAT. For each round, the teams are given an equal chance to
answer all the questions, including the Think Twice Questions. Think Twice
questions are pre-determined among the ten (10) questions for each round and will
be signified by the Think Twice Sound. These questions allow the teams to
strategize because they are given the options to answer (GO) or not (PASS). Points
assigned to Think Twice Questions are twice as much as the points assigned to
regular questions. Teams opting to answer will either earn additional points for
correct answers or lose points for incorrect answers. A team opting to pass waives
its opportunity to answer therefore will not earn or lose a point.
For the ONCE AND FOR ALL ROUND, there are ten (10) questions and each
question is worth one (1) point. The teams are given ten (10) seconds to answer
each item unless specified in the question. In this round, only one (1) Think Twice
question worth two (2) points will be asked.

For the DOUBLE THE FUN ROUND, there are ten (10) questions and each question
is worth two (2) points. The teams are given fifteen (15) seconds to answer each
item unless specified in the question. In this round, two (2) Think Twice questions
worth four (4) points each will be asked.
For the TRIPLE TREAT ROUND, there are ten (10) questions and each question is
worth three (3) points. The teams are given twenty (20) seconds to answer each
item unless specified in the question. In this final round, three (3) Think Twice
questions worth six (6) points each will be asked.
CONDUCT OF THE COMPETITION
An automated system with the following features will be used for the conduct of
the competition:
a. Allows questions in Multiple Choice or Identification formats
b. Contains the database of questions, answers, and explanations
c. Has an answer text box or option button that is enabled once the question is
flashed on the contestants’ monitor. The text box or option button is
automatically disabled/locked once the time for each particular question
has elapsed
d. Checks answers and records scores automatically
e. Allows overriding of points upon the BOJ’s decision
f. Has a built-in timing module
g. Records the running score for each round and the cumulative score for all
rounds
h. Has GO and PASS command buttons for Think Twice Questions
i. Generates results per round and the summary results
The automated system requires the following equipment and applications:
 Two (2) lcd projectors
 Two (2) projector screens
 Computer units in a LAN set-up (quantity depends on the number of
participating schools in a cluster)
 Windows XP (OS); preferably P4 or dual core; 2.8 or higher; 512 MB RAM;
good network connection
 One (1) unit of printer
For situations wherein the automated system cannot be used, the manual

THE COMPETING TEAM
Each school is entitled to send one team composed of three (3) entrants per
division.
The competing teams may join the Senior or Junior division depending on the
program they are enrolled in. Senior division is only for teams whose members are

enrolled in any CHED (3-5 year) program. Junior division is only for teams whose
members are enrolled in any TESDA (1-3 year) program.
The school must assign an STI faculty member as a coach. The coach is also the
team’s official representative and the only authorized person to file a protest in
behalf of the entrants.
THE BOARD OF JUDGES (BOJ)
The Board of Judges shall be composed of three (3) members who will convene to
resolve any issue that may arise during the conduct of the competition. Members
of the BOJ are professionals or experts in the areas of information and
communications technology, mathematics, history and culture, arts and literature,
science and technology, and general information.
MECHANICS
1. Each team is provided with a computer unit installed with the Think Quest
automated system.
2. A place shall be designated for all coaches.
3. The coaches and contestants are given approximately 30 minutes to test the
assigned computer unit and the program or system to be used prior to the
contest proper.
4. The emcee shall introduce the contestants with their coaches, members of
the Board of Judges and announce that the database of questions in CD
format has been installed in the presence of an STI HQ representative.
5. The BOJ is provided with a hardcopy of the questions per round sealed in
separate envelopes.
6. The contestants are given three (3) trial questions for them to test and get
accustomed to the system before the actual competition.
7. A printout of the Think Quest score sheet containing scores in the test round
will be routed to the teams in the presence of their coaches who will be
asked to sign the copy. This certifies that the assigned computer unit for
each team is installed with the system needed for the competition and that
the said unit is virus-free, in good and acceptable operational condition, and
is suitable for the purposes of the competition.
8. The same copy will be routed to the BOJ to certify that all teams have
checked their computer units and system. The accomplished sample score
sheet printout will serve as the signal that the competition can start.
9. Questions shall be displayed on each team’s monitor.

10. All questions shall be read twice and the timer starts when the emcee says
“Go”.
11. Using the provided keyboard and mouse, contestants can key-in their
answers in the answer text box or click on the option button within the
allotted time. Contestants may answer while the question is still being read.
12. As soon as a team has keyed in the answer to a particular question, they
should click on the “SUBMIT” button to ensure that the answer is captured
by the system. However, if the time has elapsed and the team failed to click
on the “SUBMIT” button, the system will disable the answer text
box/options and considers all characters keyed in, if any, as the final
answer of the team.
13. Answers with solutions that require special characters shall be written
manually using the provided clean sheets of paper.
14. A member of each team is required to write the team’s answers on the
provided clean sheets of paper which will be collected after each round.
Note that written answers must be the same with the keyed in answers.
These will only be checked and accepted by the BOJ when technical
problems such as but not limited to electricity or network failure arise.
15. Answers with wrong spelling and capitalization are considered incorrect.
Answers with the corresponding correct or wrong mark, as reflected on the
answer database, will be displayed on their computer screen or monitor.
16. The BOJ has the authority to override the system on the acceptability of
answers.
17. For items which will require multiple answers, a comma must be used to
separate each item.
18. Calculators are not allowed for questions that require computations.
Answers that require computations must be written in their simplest form.
19. For Think Twice questions, the subject area will be mentioned before the
competing teams are given ten (10) seconds to decide whether they will opt
to answer (GO) or not (PASS). Teams will decide by clicking on the
appropriate button. Any team that fails to click on any button after the tensecond deciding time has elapsed will automatically be considered as having
opted to “GO” and will be REQUIRED to answer the Think Twice question.
20. Only teams that opted to “Go” are allowed to answer the Think Twice
question. The teams with the correct answer are awarded with the
designated points while the teams with incorrect answers get the designated
point deductions from their accumulated points. A NO ANSWER is considered
an INCORRECT answer and gets the designated point deductions.
21. Teams that opted to “PASS” are not allowed to answer the Think Twice
question. The answer text box or option button in their assigned computer
unit is disabled. Thus, their scores remain the same.

22. After each question, the teams are given appropriate scores. Scoring is done
simultaneously using the computer system and a tally score sheet.
Accumulated scores are flashed on the provided screen.
23. To determine the ranking, points for the three rounds are accumulated.
The three teams with the highest accumulated points shall be declared as
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. However, a team that gets zero and below
will not be declared a winner even when there are only three or less
competing teams.
24. In the event of a tie, a tie-breaking question is given. Whoever gives the
first correct answer wins.
25. In cases wherein a team encounters a technical problem (such as computer
display problem, network problem) with its designated computer unit during
the progress of the competition, the team should get the attention of the
emcee by raising their hand. The emcee will then allow their authorized
representative or coach to attend to their concern.
26. FILING OF PROTESTS
 Only the official coaches are allowed to file a protest.
 Protest to be made by the authorized representative is done by
raising his right hand immediately before the next question is read.
The representative will be asked to approach the judges to settle the
issue.
 Any protest made, once another question is read, will not be
entertained.
 Controversies and objections are resolved by the Board of Judges
before the next question is read by the emcee. The decision of the
BOJ is final and irrevocable.
