FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Our value for the term is curiosity. Being
curious means having an intense desire to
know and understand. It means being inquisitive,
having an inquiring mind or a thirst for knowledge.
Having curiosity means you will question, and you will
be deeply interested in things. If you are going to be
successful in life you are going to have to be curious.

Einstein said: “I have no special talents. I am
only passionately curious.” His achievements are
unquestionable.

Sudie Back said:
“Be curious always!
For
knowledge will not acquire you; you must acquire
it.”

Roy Bennett said: “Act with integrity. Speak with
honesty. Listen with curiosity”.

And Leo Burnett – in our quote for the week –
said: “Curiosity about all aspects of life … is the
secret of great and creative people”.
There’s a big world out there, and some huge
competition.
If our students are going to be
competitive when they leave this school, then they
need to be intensely curious about what life has to offer
and about what they have to offer life. Knowledge is
power and having an education gives you choices. So,
in Term 2, live our value. Be curious.

ROGER MCQUILLAN
“The human race has one really
effective weapon, and that is
laughter” - Mark Twain.
As we remember and reflect on
Roger McQuillan’s life and his
enormous contribution, we
cannot help but look at some of
the things Mark Twain has said.
Both Roger and Twain were
known for their dry humour,
laconic manner, balanced
perspective, unassuming manner
and their unflappability.
Roger’s wit represented a greater character within.
Positive psychology recognises the correlations between
humour and wisdom; humour and the love of learning;
humour and strength of character. Roger used this to
great effect to make others feel good and help buffer
stress.
In Roger’s career at Te Anau School, followed by 27
years at Fiordland College, numerous staff and students
experienced this ability he had to take the drama out of
any situation and enhance the positive.
Roger served the College through teaching in various
departments as well as taking camps, golf, volleyball,
dance and numerous other options… and if he was stuck
he would come up with one of his well known lines -
“I thought we would just play a game.”

Roger left a huge imprint on the Fiordland College
culture and on all those who came in contact with him.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

GATEWAY
SOUTHLAND CROSS COUNTRY
Fiordland College hosted these championships once
again at Ivon Wilson Park, on Wednesday.
Tom Kitto Thomas is exploring his future
career choices through the Gateway Work
Experience Programme.
The numbers were up on last year with over 250
competitors and at least that number of spectators
from the 16 competing schools.

The standout performer from Fiordland College was
Olivia Murphy who ran a very smart and controlled
race to win the Senior Girls title.
Other runners to make the Top 6 in a very large field
were Lily Campbell in the Under 16 Girls and
George Nichols in the Senior Boys.
One of the other features is the teams’ race, and our
athletes who performed well were:


Under 16 Girls team (Lily Campbell, Claire
Hames and Erika Johnstone) placed 2nd in
the Southland Section and 1st in the Fiordland
Shield Teams Event.
Senior Girls team (Olivia Murphy, Harmana
Kraak and Dyani Shepherd-Oates) were also
2nd in the Southland Section and 1st in the
Fiordland Shield Teams Event.
SCHOOL JACKETS
We have a number of jackets available from
the school office for sale at $110.00 each.
These are showerproof and polar fleece lined
with the school logo embroidered on them.
EX STUDENTS’ UPDATE
From time to time we will drop in a feature highlighting
the inspiring pathways of some of our former students
and what they are now up to. This week we have two
future electricians featured:
Tyler Hansen and Lizzie Souter have both
been taken on by ETCO (Electrical Training
Company) to complete an electrical
apprenticeship over 3½ years.
Tyler Hansen
Tyler and Lizzie were both Year 12 students at
the College in 2016. Tyler will be working at
Fiordland Electrical and Lizzie at Jones
Electrical.
Lizzie Souter
Both students worked hard to gain the necessary NCEA
credits at Level 2 to ensure successful entry into this
demanding career.

Fiordland Trails Trust AGM and Opening Celebration
for the Queens Reach to Balloon Loop section
When: Sunday 28th May, 1pm AGM, 2pm opening ceremony
Where: Queens Reach – look for the Meridian marquee
(Yacht Club as back up venue for AGM if the weather is severe – check our Facebook page on Saturday 29th)
Transport: A bus will be available to transport people from the Department of Conservation long term car park (on the Te
Anau-Milford Highway) to Queens Reach for the opening ceremony, leaving Te Anau at 1.30pm. After the opening ceremony
the bus will take people from Queens Reach to Balloon Loop to enable people to travel the 19km back to Te Anau or 9km to
Queens Reach. A bike trailer will travel at the same times. Transport back to Te Anau is not provided.
Cost: There is no charge but donations to the development and maintenance of the trail are welcome.

Outside Sports, by the Yacht Club and at the opening ceremony.
FREE EPILEPSY SEMINAR
There is a free Epilepsy Seminar on Tuesday 23 May
at the Fiordland Community House and Heartland Centre in
Luxmore Drive from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
