GUIDELINES FOR TRAVELING AS TOURIST FROM MERCOSUR COUNTRIES (EXEMPTED OF
VITUR)
When traveling to Brazil as a tourist from a Mercosur country, exempted from
tourist visas, you must bear in mind that presenting your passport upon departure
towards Brazil gives you the right to arrive at a port of entry (port, airport or
border control). Your admission into the country is discretionary of Brazilian
immigration authorities.
Upon arrival you must be able to show that:
1. your passport is valid and you have enough pages available for Brazilian
immigration authorities to stamp your passport upon arrival and departure;
2. your passport is going to be valid on the date of your return;
3. you are financially capable of maintaining yourself during your intended
stay in Brazil;
4. you have hotel reservations, lodging arrangements or are going to stay at
a family member’s or friend’s house;
5. you must be able to answer questions about your intended activities;
6. you are going to leave Brazil before your maximum permitted stay
(return tickets are usually considered a proof that you have arrangements
to leave the country).
If you are entering Brazil coming directly from your country, you may travel
without a passport, as long as you have a valid identity document from your
country and as long as that document was issued less than 10 years ago. If you are
entering Brazil coming from the United States, you need a valid passport from your
country.
How long am I allowed to stay?
The immigration authorities will stamp your passport with your maximum allowed
stay. Otherwise, you are allowed to stay in Brazil for 90 days each time you visit the
country. The limit of days you are allowed to stay in a year as a tourist is 180 days
(when you sum up all the days spent in Brazil).
If you already know that you need to stay longer than 90 days as a tourist, you
must apply for an extension at the nearest Superintendência Regional da Polícia
Federal within 30 days of your arrival (more information available at
http://www.pf.gov.br/servicos-pf/estrangeiro/prorrogacao-de-prazo-de-estadade-turista-e-viajante-a-negocios-temporario-ii-1).
If you overstay, you are going to be fined and may have problems applying for an
extension or for a new visa in the future.
