Medium Term Planning Year 3 Term 3 and 4 Romans Environment In our links with the science topic we shall look at how the local environment effects the choice of building materials. We shall look at how the land changes to form volcanoes and how they can be both dangerous and a positive occurrence. In a link with Romans we shall discover how their legacy of building straight roads had such an impact on the landscape of our country today. Enterprise The children will have the opportunity to plan their own sponsorship fundraising enterprise to raise money for wet play games. Spiritual and moral The children will have the opportunity to learn about Spiritual and moral beliefs of the Romans. We will study the origins of the gods and goddesses and the stories and beliefs behind them. The children will relate them back to their own beliefs and how society was and is affected by them. They will have the opportunity to think about what makes them belong to a group. The importance of family (blood and otherwise) and the role those people have on their lives. Knowledge of the World The children’s knowledge of the world will be enriched by their work during Fairtrade week. The children will take part in activities looking at the lives and situations of people who are affected by and will benefit from the support Fairtrade gives them. They will actively help to campaign for a fair deal for all. In Our Topic of Romans over the whole Autumn Term we shall have the opportunity to look at the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain (including the rebellion of Boudicca and the events leading to the battle of Colchester) and the legacy it left us. We will look at the organisation of the Roman army and why they were so successful, as well as considering why Britons joined the Roman Army. They will have the chance to find out about Roman settlements and engineering, Roman Gods, life as a Roman citizen. We will visit the Roman settlement of Chedworth and towards the end of the topic we will be holding a Roman themed day. P.E will be based outside this term covering the skills and game tactics of Football building to full game situations and practicing our long distance running skills, thinking about fitness and strength. Towards the end of Term 2 we shall be holding our now traditional ‘Strictly Deddington’ dance competition. Science is all about Rocks and Soils. We shall be thinking about where we find rocks, the different types of rocks, what types of soil there are and how soil is made. We shall become Rock detectives and test the properties of rocks to think about they can be of use to us in everyday life. Art will be looking at creating an outdoor Mosaic. We will also study the Art of Piet Mondrian and the sculpture of Roman Busts. Phonics/spelling ….We will also be covering all areas of grammar in specially designed sessions within the timetable. French will be continued each week and is based on conversation and food and drink, the written word has been introduced. See planning folder for RE and Music.
