Ourselves How We Express An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, culture, nature, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity. Central Idea: People express themselves through music and movement. Lines of Inquiry Students will inquire into: • Music and movement • How people use their creativity to express themselves • How people express themselves differently through music and movement Key Questions Teachers will guide the inquiry by asking questions, including: • What can I express through music and movement? (form) • How can I express myself through music and movement? (function) • How does music make me feel/move? (reflection) They will also have the opportunity to reflect on various kinds of music and demonstrate their creativity in expressing themselves musically. Transdisciplinary Skills In this unit of inquiry the students will work on fine and gross motor skills by moving to music, dancing and making and playing instruments. They will develop their spatial awareness by moving safely around and becoming increasingly aware of others’ personal space. They will work cooperatively on creating dances and/or musical pieces with peers. They will work on communication skills as they watch, listen to and analyse various types of music and movement. Attributes and Attitudes Key Concepts Students will investigate form by listening and responding to various kinds of music and movement, including songs, dances, musical stories and games.They will explore function by investigating how various instruments are played, how to make music and do dances. Ideas for Home Students will be encouraged to demonstrate their risk-taking/courage as they participate in songs and dances.
