600th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Jan Hus
July 6 is the 600th anniversary of the martyrdom of Jan Hus in 1415. Hus
earned a doctorate from the University of Prague and was ordained in
1401. He became preacher at Prague's Bethlehem Chapel, a center of
reform in Bohemia (for example, sermons were preached in Czech, not
Latin). Hus preached Reformation themes, including:




Calling for a higher level of morality among the priesthood.
Preaching and Bible reading in the common language, and that all
Christians receive full communion (at the time, laypersons received
only the bread, and only priests were allowed to receive the wine).
Opposing the sale of indulgences, which were documents of personal forgiveness from the Pope,
often sold at exorbitant prices to raise funds for the Crusades.
Opposing the doctrine of Papal infallibility when Papal decrees contradicted the Bible. Hus asserted
the primacy of the Scriptures over church leaders and councils.
Hus was excommunicated and forbidden to preach. He leaned even more heavily on the Bible, the final
authority for the church. Named a heretic, Hus left the area but was eventually found by the Catholic Church
Council in the City of Constance and burned at the stake. Given one last chance to recant, Hus prayed, "Lord
Jesus, it is for thee that I patiently endure this cruel death. I pray thee to have mercy on my enemies."
His witness and commitment inspired Gregory the Patriarch to establish a new church 40 years after Hus’s
death—the Unitas Fratrum (Unity of the Brethren). Through the centuries, the Moravian Church has preached
Hus’s message that faith must be completed in love, with the simple proclamation of the good news of Jesus
Christ and God’s unlimited love for all people. Six hundred years later, Moravians proclaim Hus as a martyr
to the truth, a faithful witness of the gospel, and a shining example that truth cannot be destroyed by violence.
(paraphrased from the writings of Rev. Dr. Craig Atwood, director for the Center for Moravian Studies; photo,

Pope Francis, speaking from Vatican City on June 16, 2015
“I welcome you, distinguished representatives of the Hussite Czechoslovak Church and the Evangelical
Church of Czech Brethren, who are in Rome to celebrate a Liturgy of Reconciliation on the occasion of the
600th anniversary of the Reformer Jan Hus.
“Six centuries have passed since the day that renowned preacher and Rector of the University of Prague,
Jan Hus, died tragically. Already in 1999, Saint John Paul II expressed his ‘profound regret for the cruel death
inflicted [on him]’ and numbered Hus among the Reformers of the Church. The study must continue on the
person and activity of Jan Hus, who for a long time was the subject of contention among Christians, while
today he has become a reason for dialogue. This research, carried out without conditioning of an ideological
type, will be an important service to the historical truth, to all Christians and to the whole society, also beyond
the boundaries of your Nation.”

Our Congregation’s Story
During the following Sunday services in July, the Stewardship Committee will have conversations on the
congregation’s faith story over the past 20 years. We’ll learn how one person’s vision and a $1,000 pledge
flourished and multiplied a thousand times to bloom into the living, breathing, thriving campus we are today!
July 12 – A vision and a seed planted
July 19 – Cultivation and growth
July 26 – Fruition & harvest

Meet James Heroux
James is a member of the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. For some time,
he has felt called to the ministry and will begin attending Moravian
Theological Seminary this fall. He has already earned his bachelor’s in
Business Administration and is working for the Sevastopol School district as
a Special Education Aid.
This summer, he has been working with Sturgeon Bay as an intern. Now he
comes to us at Sister Bay for a few weeks (preaching at the end of June).
After that, he goes to Ephraim Moravian. To obtain practical experience, he’ll
be participating in worship, the Anderson Docks-ologies, various meetings,
the ministry at Scandia Village, and helping Pastor Kerry at Mt. Morris.
We partner with James in his desire to serve the Lord through ordained
ministry. When you see him around the church, introduce yourself!

July Community Lunch
This month’s free Community Lunch falls on July 1. If you’re in the mood for a picnic, the menu is perfect for
you: outdoor grilling…sides of chips, potato salad, and beans…and root beer floats for dessert!
Last month, Cheryl Lubahn made her mother’s recipe…delicious,
fluffy and light. Cheryl’s happy to share this family recipe with you.
Alice Senkbeil’s Lemon Jell-O Dessert
1 6-oz box of lemon Jell-O
2 c boiling water
1 c cold water
1 16-oz tub of Cool Whip
1 20-oz can of lemon pie filling
Combine Jell-O with boiling water. Stir to dissolve thoroughly. Add
cold water and stir. Chill in refrigerator until slightly thickened. Add
Cool Whip and pie filling, folding in gently until it’s blended. Pour into
a 9 x 11 pan or individual serving dishes. Chill about 2 hours.
Spiritual Writers Guild
The Spiritual Writers Guild will be meeting on Saturday, July 11, at 10 am.
Everyone is welcome to sit in, discuss ideas, enjoy the fellowship, and have
some refreshments.
We’re moving ahead with our Advent challenge! Pastor Kerry reminded us that
this is an avenue for creativity. The booklet will offer devotionals from the
broadest base possible, from a place of faith but with a local aspect. The four candles/themes of Advent—
Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace—will define the four sections, with subheads for days of the week. Some days
may contain one item and some may have more.
The hope is that this will be used for many Advent seasons to come. You do not have to be a member of
the church or the group or even come to meetings. Write a poem, a life experience, hymn lyrics, a prayer,
or a short essay. For those who aren’t writers, you can submit photos or pictures (high-resolution, please)
of your artwork that represents a theme.
Deadline for submissions is September 30.
[email protected]) or come to the July meeting!

Celebrating Our Soldiers
Independence Day always brings to mind our
military men and women who served throughout
our history and kept us safe—and proud! The
101st Airborne Division (Ft. Campbell, KY)
honored 1st Sgt Billy Jack Sargent of the 159th
Combat Aviation Brigade at a Retirement
Ceremony on May 28, 2015.
1st Sgt Sargent retired after 22 years of active
duty and six deployment combat tours: two to
Kuwait, one to Iraq, and three to Afghanistan.
His assignments through the years ranged from crew chief of the 507th Medical Company
Air Ambulance to a maintenance supervisor, aircraft technical inspector, aviation life support technician, squad
leader, platoon sergeant, and retiring as an assault company 1st Sergeant.
Through his 22 years in the Army, he earned multiple badges, ribbons, awards, and medals, including Bronze
Stars, National Defense Service Medals, The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism
Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbons, ISAF NATO Medal, Multinational Force and Observers Medals, and
the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait).
A graduate of Howards Grove High School, 1st Sgt Billy holds an AAS in Aviation Maintenance Management, a
BS in Aviation Technology, and is currently pursuing FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification. He is the father
of four children: Alexis (14), Ashley (12), Kaylee (9), and Dylan (7). His parents are Cheryl Lubahn of Ellison Bay
and Franklin Sargent of Fort Worth, TX.
The Oasis
Stop by The Oasis for good summer reading! New in The Oasis are copies of
Guideposts, Angels on Earth, and Mysterious Ways magazines.
These are interesting and quick reads that you can take home—courtesy of
Beth Ferris, who has been inspired by these publications and will be bringing
them regularly to share with her church family.
Words of Worship
A few minutes before worship, listen for the ringing of the Memorial Garden bell as the
candelabra are lit. It is a signal to conclude our conversations and get ready for the
prelude that will lead us into our worship service.
On July 5, we celebrate the martyrdom of Jan Hus, a religious theologian and reformer.
He was influenced by the writings of John Wycliffe, who believed the “Bible is the faith
of the Church and should be taught in whatever language is most easily understood.”
Each time we read Scripture or hear it read, is an opportunity for us to thank God.

From the Parish Nurse
D
o you know Debbie or Donald Downer? The couple appears and people scatter
because they proverbially chat on a negative theme. Have you noticed how
negativity changes the spirit or tone of a group even in a one-on-one conversation?
You could start out the day feeling on top of the world, lighthearted and in love with life,
and someone like this enters your sphere, it’s like a storm blew in.
Negativity is a very powerfully charged feeling, and negative people are not helpful or
supportive of anyone’s position except their own. Someone who thinks in the negative
has a glass that probably is not even half empty.
If you find yourself in the presence of someone who is always negative and not
receptive to your attempts to consider the subject in a different manner, back away. Life is way too short to see
everything in a pessimistic way. It reminds me of the film Pollyanna where the orphaned child is playing the glad
game in a town filled with dour people who are reminded weekly by the local pastor of God’s wrath. The glad
game eventually creeps into everyone’s heart and, of course, there is a happy ending where even the controlling
aunt gets “glad.”
I haven’t tried that tactic, but the method seems similar…trying to show pessimists there is another way to see
a subject. It also makes me a happier person to steer clear of negativity. I choose positive energy…and you?
