HOMEWORK DIRECTIONS
Personal history
Write a one page history of yourself. Where were you born? When? What important
events have happened in your life? How have you become the person you are today?
This does not have to be typed and should not take much time. Remember to also get the binder!
My generation song or poem
Write a short song or poem that summarizes who you are as a generation of young adults. Think about how your
generation is different from your parents – what things make each generation different? What is the culture of you
and your friends? Your song or poem should have a total of at least 20 lines.
Re-write Enduring Understandings #3 and #4
Write enduring understandings #3 and #4 in your own words in a sentence or two. For #3, define a “system” and
a “movement” and use the internet (or memory) for historical examples. For #4, complete the Venn Diagram –
one circle is conflict, one circle is cooperation….consider how “both” could fit in the middle.

For homework tonight, you will have the opportunity to watch a short (3 minute) video from the History Channel.
You may have to watch it more than once. If you do not have internet access at home, please plan to use
computers at school.
Reconstruction is the time period immediately after the Civil War. The Northern government tries to
“reconstruct” or rebuild the South after the war, but there is resistance. In addition to dealing with the
former slaves, the government has to figure out what to do with the former “rebels” from the South.
1) During Reconstruction, what positive things happened for black people?
2) Despite these positives, why is the video entitled “The failure of Reconstruction”?

For the project in this unit, we will write short research papers (3-5 pages) regarding The Jungle by Upton
Sinclair. Your job as the historian is to prove whether or not The Jungle is an accurate representation of life at the
turn of the century in the United States. Our goal is to learn important research and writing skills that will impact
the rest of this course. All papers are due by Wed, Sept. 18. No late papers will be accepted.
