Lent Term 2016
Where did the Lent term go?
Wow, what a whirlwind of a term that was. Ten action packed weeks filled with
everything from coursework deadlines to house competitions, interschool sports
fixtures, drama productions and of course the small matter of CHAPS thrown in
to add a little bit of spice to the mix. All of this on top of the normal day to day
running of lessons and prep; what was that about the European working time
directive? In any case I know the boys wouldn't have it any other way, and I’d
be hearing groans of “Sir, I’m so bored.” if it was.
From a personal point of view it has been a real adventure for me. Coming into
an established culture and environment was always going to be an interesting
transition; however it has been made significantly smoother thanks to the enthusiastic, mature and sympathetic welcoming the boys have given me. The
same boys have had a great term and there have been highs and lows across the
board; but remember, the point is not to get to the end of term as quickly as
We’re No. 1: The Yr 9s galloped to victory in the College
steeplechase with George Pool, Adam Armitage, Reubin
Hart, Joe Shouksmith and Will Harris finishing 1st, 2nd,
7th, 8th and 11th respectively .
possible. If that was so, people would do the absolute minimum and miss out on
all the College has to offer. The point is to enjoy the journey, the good and the
bad, to reflect on it, to learn from it, and to ultimately become a better person
because of the experience.
Enjoy a great break.

CHAPS
This year’s Craig House Amateur Performance Society relocated to a new Lent term slot that fell the
weekend after half term. Each year group were tasked to come up with a sketch in order to entertain
the parents of Craig and members of staff in the VIP area at the front of big school, as well as the more
vocal members of the school body sat in the heaven's right back in the cheap seats; a tough act to balance out. But with the guidance of the Upper 6th the boys were, ‘alright on the night.’ Particular performances that lit up the evening came from Oliver Arnold and Charlie Milner with a rendition of “Love
Yourself” by Justin Bieber, Steven ‘Neel Mirpuri’ Spielberg for his Star Wars trilogy and of course his annual guitar solo and Fergus Piper and Charles Pendry for “Ordinary People” by John Legend. I would also
like to thank our sponsors; Fitbit, Pantene, Guinness and Channel 4 for their continued support.
I wait in anticipation to see who wants to step up next year.
#chaps
After a fantastic effort by the boys in the house, Craig managed to win the trophy ahead of competitive efforts from Reeves and Pennell houses. The day
got off to the best possible start with George Pool and Adam Armitage gaining
a first and second place respectively and beginning the all out dominance of
the Yr 9 competition. As the day went on Reeves and Pennell started to get
some good results in the inter boys competitions and placed some pressure on
the house. However, quite fittingly it was the senior boys who brought home
the title with a spirited performance towards the end of the afternoon finishing
second and third the two senior competitions. #craighousechampions

Academics
The boys have been burrowing away hard in the house and at
home on their academic work and there are some notable
achievements. Toby Brooks has had a fantastic term that has included numerous show HSMs, a reward escalation, a gold medal
in the UK biology Olympiad and to top it all off an offer from
Clare College to read Natural Sciences. Across the year groups Yr
9 recorded the most Show HSMs over the course of the term with
Yr 11 coming in second place followed closely by Yr 10 in third.
Special mentions to Oli Carter, Reubin Hart, Alex Lock, Joe Pocklington, Tom Stewart—Blacker, Jaynish Patel, Hugo McNally and
Toby Brooks for being the show HSM leaders in their year groups.

House Hockey
The house hockey tournament, held on Beresford
asto in the last week of term
saw boys throw down their
College allegiances for the
house cause. Both the junior
and senior sides battled
through tough competition
playing all of the other houses in a round robin format.
The junior side achieved a
collection of wins; however,
not quite enough to win the
competition. The senior side
however went one better
and brought home another
cup for the house winning
the competition at a canter.

Music
Three boys have gone under the spotlight this term in order to achieve
a graded level with musical instruments. Charles Pendry (Grade 8
Flute), Adam Howard (Grade 6 Violin) and Joe Shouksmith (Grade 5
Piano) have spent considerable time honing their skills and have been
successful in achieving their respective grades. Well done gents.

Study Leave
As we move into the summer term the exam season draws ever closer
and a matter very close to the boy’s hearts comes in to focus; study
leave. This is obviously a hugely important time for the boys and their
ability to optimize their chances of getting the best possible grades in
the summer. It is possible however for some to get it wrong from time to
time. So in order to just align the boys and the school expectations I’ve
put together some key bits of information below.

When a pupil, who is not on study leave, has a morning exam, they are expected to attend afternoon
lessons that day following the exam.

When a pupil, who is not on study leave, has an afternoon exam they are expected to attend lessons
prior to break; however, they may take lessons after break off in order to prepare for the exam.

During study leave (Dates below) formal teaching has finished and revision sessions are laid on for pupils by departments. Pupils are encouraged to attend these, however, pupils may revise at home
where parents feel that this may be more effective.

Regardless of study leave being in operation, all pupils are required to fulfil all other school commitments.

No study leave period granted for L6th. Those sitting examinations this year are to follow the above
guidance
