Preparation for our worship
Hilda is often depicted holding a church building to her heart. But it was
people, not buildings, which she treasured most. One such was Caedmon, a
simple illiterate cowherd who, through Hilda’s encouragement, became a
great writer
writer of spiritual songs and hymns. As you prepare for worship
please ask God to speak to you through these words.
A Kontakion1 for Hilda
Blessed are you, mother of the Church,
radiant jewel lighting our darkness;
faithful in achievement and adversity;
disciple of Aidan;
teacher of bishops;
fosterer of nuns;
wise mentor, generous host;
friend of creation;
counsellor of rulers, patron of cowherds;
encourager of talents;
able teacher, noble in bearing;
constant in disappointment;
devoted to prayer, unceasing in praise.
Like a tree whose roots go deep,
you bear the secret of growth and the fruit of wisdom;
you seek to heal the wounded nations.
All glory to the Three of Tender love
outpouring on you, outpouring on us;
one God who mothers us all.

into Thy presence.
There show me what I am,
and what Thou has purposed me to be.
Then hide me from Thy tears.

The Greeting
Ogle,, greets the people
The Dean of Birmingham Cathedral, the Very Revd Catherine Ogle
In the name of Christ, we welcome you.
We have been called out of darkness into God's marvellous light.
Grace and peace be with you
and also with you.
As a mother comforts her child,
So you take us in your loving arms.
Be our refuge from the strife of tongues.
Inspire us by Hilda’s saintly life.
Prayers of Penitence
We come before God just as we are.
The gospel calls us to turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.
As we offer ourselves to him in penitence and faith,
we renew our confidence and trust in his mercy.
Hilda was constant in faith throughout her life.
Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have been faithless.
Hilda offered guidance to high and low alike.
Forgive us, Lord, for prejudice towards others.
Hilda fostered excellence in all that was done.
Forgive us, Lord, for being content with half-heartedness.

There follows a pe

Then everyone joins in, saying:
4
Father eternal, giver of light and grace,
we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour,
in what we have thought,
in what we have said and done,
through ignorance, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We have wounded your love,
and marred your image in us.
We are sorry and ashamed,
and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light.
Amen.
Absolution
The Dean says these words of forgiveness
May the God of love and power
forgive you and free you from your sins,
heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,
and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Stand.
As forgiven and freed people, we sing the Gloria.
This turns our focus from ourselves to God the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit.

The Gloria
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory to God in the heights of the heavens.
Peace to God’s people, all people on earth.
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Son of the Father, all glory and worship;
praise and thanksgiving to you, Lamb of God.
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory, glory, glory to God!
You take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us, receive our prayer.
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Seated in pow’r at the right of the Father,
Jesus alone is the Lord, the Most High.
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory, glory, glory to God!
And with the Spirit of love everlasting,
Reigning in glory for ever, Amen.
Glory, glory, glory to God!
Glory, glory, glory to God!
The Collect for St Hilda
Please remain standing
Eternal God,
who made the abbess Hilda
to shine like a jewel in our land,
and through her holiness and leadership
blessed your Church with new life and unity:
help us like her, to yearn for the gospel of Christ
and to reconcile those who are divided;
through him who is alive and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word
Sit.
A Reading from the Old Testament: Isaiah 61.10-62.5
10
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD,
my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11
For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up before all the nations.
62For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
until her vindication shines out like the dawn,
and her salvation like a burning torch.
2
The nations shall see your vindication,
and all the kings your glory;
and you shall be called by a new name
that the mouth of the LORD will give.
3
You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4
You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
and your land shall no more be termed Desolate;
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
and your land Married;
for the LORD delights in you,
and your land shall be married.
5
For as a young man marries a young woman,
so shall your builder marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so shall your God rejoice over you.
At the end of the reading, the reader says:
This is the word of the Lord:
Thanks be to God.

A Reading from the New Testament: Revelation 1.1-4, 2.1-5
1The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what
must soon take place; he made it known by sending his angel to his
servantJohn,2who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus
Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of
the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in
it; for the time is near. 4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and
from the seven spirits who are before his throne.
2‘To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who
holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden
lampstands:2 ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance. I know
that you cannot tolerate evildoers; you have tested those who claim to be
apostles but are not, and have found them to be false.3I also know that you are
enduring patiently and bearing up for the sake of my name, and that you have
not grown weary.4But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love
you had at first.5Remember then from what you have fallen; repent, and do the
works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lamp stand
from its place, unless you repent.
At the end of the reading, the reader says:
This is the word of the Lord:
Thanks be to God.
Hymn: Common Praise 411 – Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Stand.
Who was Caedmon? An illiterate cowherd who worked for St
Hilda’s Abbey in Whitby, he received a dream from God who told
him it was time to start composing hymns of praise about ‘the
beginning of created things’. He had always thought he could not
sing! But he remembered the song he had sung in his dream
when he awoke. When word got to Hilda about Caedmon’s
vision, she encouraged him to start work as a hymn writer. With
her support and nurture he became one of England’s earliest
recorded poets.

The Gospel Reading: Luke 18.35-end
Remain standing as the Dean introduces the reading
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
35
As he approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside
begging.36When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was
happening.37They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’38Then he shouted,
‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’39Those who were in front sternly
ordered him to be quiet; but he shouted even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have
mercy on me!’40Jesus stood still and ordered the man to be brought to him; and
when he came near, he asked him,41‘What do you want me to do for you?’ He
said, ‘Lord, let me see again.’42Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith
has saved you.’43Immediately he regained his sight and followed him, glorifying
God; and all the people, when they saw it, praised God.
At the end
This is the Gospel of the Lord:
Praise to you, O Christ.

Blessing of the banners
Please stand as the Dean leads the blessing of the two new banners
in memory of Mary Abel and Mary Apperley
Wisdom lights up the land.
She calls us to walk in her ways.
Wisdom has built a house.
She calls us to learn her ways.
Wisdom is more precious than rubies.
We desire her above all things.
9
O God, our vision,
in our mother’s womb
you formed us for your glory.
As your servant Hilda shone
like a jewel in the church,
and Caedmon was encouraged
to use his musical gifts,
so now we delight to claim
her gifts of wisdom and nurturing.
Bless now, we pray,
these banners to Hilda and Caedmon;
that they may inspire us
to be a community that grows in wisdom
and nurtures good gifts,
as we give thanks for the lives
of Mary Apperley and Mary Abel.
In the power of Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Preparation of the Table
Everyone joins in saying the words of the offertory proclamation
Yours, Lord, is the greatness,
the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty.
For everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.
Eucharistic Prayer F
Remain standing.
The Lord is here.
His Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
11
And now we give you thanks
that your glory is revealed in Hilda and all the saints.
In their lives you have given us
an example of faithfulness to Christ.
In their holiness we find encouragement and hope.
In our communion with them we share the unity of your kingdom.
Father, you made the world and love your creation.
You gave your Son Jesus Christ to be our Saviour.
His dying and rising have set us free from sin and death.
And so we gladly thank you, with saints and angels praising you, and singing:
Holy, holy, holy,
My heart, my heart adores you!
My heart is glad to say the words:
You are holy, Lord.2
We praise and bless you, loving Father,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord;
and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit,
that broken bread and wine outpoured
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
On the night before he died
he had supper with his friends and,
taking bread, he praised you.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,
in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice
made once for all upon the cross.
Bringing before you the bread of life and

cup of salvation,
we proclaim his death and resurrection
until he comes in glory.
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died:
Christ is risen:
Christ will come again.
Lord of all life,
help us to work together for that day
when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy
will be seen in all the earth.
Look with favour on your people,
gather us in your loving arms
and bring us with St Hilda and all the saints
to feast at your table in heaven.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours,
O loving Father,
for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Sit or kneel
As our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory
are yours now and for ever. Amen.
13
Breaking of the bread
The president breaks the consecrated bread.
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in the one bread.
All join in singing
Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.
God’s holy gifts
for God’s holy people
Jesus Christ is holy,
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Amen
Time to reflect and receive
All are welcome to come forward to the altar rail, whatever church you may normally attend.
Come as you are. Hold out your hands to receive bread and wine if you are used to receiving
communion. Otherwise keep your hands by your side and receive a blessing from the priest.
Unconsecrated grapes may also be offered to children. Wardens will guide you up at the
appropriate time.
What should I do once I have
received?
Today we are offering prayer for wholeness and healing
in the St Katherine’s chapel, to the left of the main altar.
Once you have received Holy Communion or a blessing,
then and you would like to be prayed for, then members of
our prayer ministry team are waiting for you.
Otherwise, use the peace and quiet to pray for those near
you, using the following prayer:
Lord Jesus, surround N with your love:
Come to them in their weariness
Take their burdens on your shoulders
For you are gentle and humble of heart.
During the distribution of Holy Communion the Choir will sing ‘Living Bread’ and ‘Spirit of
the Living God‘. Silence is kept at the end
14
Prayer after Communion
A special prayer is said by a minister. After which all join in:
Merciful God,
who gave such grace to your servant Hilda
that she served you with singleness of heart
and loved you above all things:
help us, whose communion with you
has been renewed in this sacrament,
to forsake all that holds us back
from following Christ
and to grow into his likeness from glory to glory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Almighty God,
we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.
Through him we offer you our souls and bodies
to be a living sacrifice.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory.
Amen.
Final Hymn: Hope of our calling
Stand to sing. During this hymn the choir will process into the nave
Hope of our calling: hope through courage won
by those who dared to share all Christ has done.
Saints of today, Christ’s banner now unfurled,
will bring his gospel to a waiting world.
Hope of our calling: hope with strength empowered,
inspired by all that we have seen and heard;
this call is ours, for we are chosen too,
to live for God in all we say and do.
Hope of our calling: hope with grace outpoured,
from death’s despair the gift of life restored;
our call to serve, to wash each other’s feet,
to bring Christ’s healing touch to all we meet.
15
Hope of our calling: hope by faith made bold
to sow God’s righteousness throughout the world;
bring peace from conflict, fruitfulness from weeds,
the kingdom’s harvest from the kingdom’s seeds.
Hope of our calling: Spirit-filled, unbound,
old joys remembered and new purpose found,
our call refreshed by sacrament and word,
we go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

KEEPING WARM IN ST HILDA’S
We would love the church to be warmer on a Sunday. But we need you to
know this fact.
We calculate, with current gas prices, it costs us £50 every time we heat up the
church.
The boilers are in good working order but our lovely building's spaciousness
does make it difficult to heat.
We will be experimenting with setting the heating on a continuous low setting at
the end of November to see if that improves things and is affordable. Until then
please wrap up warm, sit closer together with others and wear extra layers if
you are finding church a little more nippy than your home.
Rev Paul Hinton, on behalf of the PCC.

THANK YOU FROM MELANIE MITTOO & FAMILY
Thank you from me and my family for all the prayers made for Daniel. He was
cremated last Friday which was a sad occasion but he had a lovely service with
lovely memories of him shared.
CHRISTMAS LUNCH
We shall be offering Christmas lunch on Christmas Day in the church hall for
about 28 people; who live in the community and would normally spend
Christmas Day on their own. If you know of any such person please let one of
us know as soon as possible. David & Wendy Dyke.
ST HILDA’S BABY GROUP (NEWBORN TO 2 YEARS OLD)
We are looking for some help on Thursday afternoons (term time only) between
1pm and 4pm. Would you like to help? Tea and biscuits available as a
reward! Please speak to Jackie Lawrence, Carole Southall, Carol Hadlington
or Mary Hallman.
DO YOU HAVE AN “ICE” NUMBER?
Recently a number of the group leaders in church underwent Basic Emergency
First Aid Training. During the training the question was asked if we had an
“ICE” number in our phones (In Case of Emergency), this is so the police or
ambulance can contact a relative or friend if you were unable to contact them
yourself. It may be a duplication in your phone, but is worthwhile having, so
enter ICE as a contact name in your phone with the number of the person you
would want to be contacted in an emergency.
BIRMINGHAM HALF MARATHAN
I would like to thank the congregation for their encouragement, support and
sponsorship as I ran the half marathon. Thanks to you and the congregation at
St Germain's church we have raised enough money to take 13 beaver scouts to
the Hippodrome pantomime in December. On behalf of those 13 very excited
children, thank you.

SMETHWICK FOOD BANK - IT’S TIME FOR ACTION!!!
Firstly thank you all for your very kind donations of food especially the wonderful
gifts you gave at the Harvest Festival. These will really make a difference to
local people struggling to buy food.
During the Harvest Festival Service I asked if we could gather a team together
from St. Hilda’s to take the lead in a local supermarket collection. Several
people said that they would be willing to help.
We have now secured a supermarket collection for the Saturday 1st December,
so now is the time for action.
If you can help, I will be putting on a short information and training session on
Sunday 25th November after the church service. Could you call me on 07962

soup whilst they wait for their food, we are trying to build a stock of these up, to
see us through the winter months. So if you can, could you please donate a
box of ‘Cup a Soup’.

ARE YOU A KNITTER? WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN WITH THE HELP
OF SOMEONE ELSE IN THE CONGREGATION?
MIGHT YOU LOVE CROCHETING AND KNITTING FOR CHARITY?
MAKE 8"/20cm SQUARES AND HELP KEEP A COLD AIDS ORPHAN
WARM.
During the recent Quiet Day and the residential for the Growing Leaders’
Course, several people rediscovered or found an interest in knitting. I now
have wool and some knitting needles and I would like to try to send some
squares on a regular basis to KasCare’s knitting for charity scheme. They
make blankets for babies born with AIDS in Africa.
The wool, needles and instructions will be in the church porch in a box either
under or on the table and I would love to see some knitting going on during
coffee time after services or any time the church is open and you have some
minutes to sit and knit or encourage others. When you have done enough, just
put your knitting back in the box and maybe someone else will pick it up and
carry on with the square. You could of course take it home and bring it back
finished!
The squares need to measure 8”, in double knitting wool, garter stitch (every
row plain knitting). You can use lots of different colours if you like. 6mm or
size 4 needles should be used, 32 stitches per row.
Finished squares should be left in the box for me to collect and send off.
Congratulations to Betty Tombs who has already completed one square. WELL
DONE, BETTY!
If you borrow needles, I would be grateful if you could return them to the box
when you have finished with them. If you have any needles you now longer
use of the right size, I am sure someone else in the congregation could make
use of them. Just leave them in the box or give them to the Duty Warden.
If you would like to know more, please contact me on 0121 422 2786.
Keep knitting!

November at St Hilda's
Each Sunday morning this month we have services which mark
important festivals in our church year.
Today is our Patronal Festival, when we honour St Hilda. We
welcome the Dean of Birmingham Cathedral, the Very Rev Catherine
Ogle, who will preach and preside. But also, we will dedicate two new
banners commissioned in memory of Mary Apperley and Mary Abel.
They are of St Hilda and Caedmon and will eventually hang in the choir
vestry - you can see them today hanging from the pillars in church.
Also today we will be asking the congregation to give in aid of our
Mission Charities.
And finally, on November 25th, we will celebrate the last Sunday of the
Christian year - Christ the King - with a service of Holy Communion at
10.30am. The baptism service will happen at 12.30pm.
The proposed sermon series exploring the ministry of healing and
prayer has been postponed until 2013.
