GENERAL INFORMATION: This is a special cooperator area, managed for wildlife, waterfowl and special hunt purposes by Muskegon
County with the DNR Wildlife Division. Managed waterfowl hunts are organized cooperatively and offered in select portions of this
area - as described below, within the map on reverse side, and in other DNR documentation; the area is divided into managed hunt
locations, and all numbered areas may not be available in each hunt. The MCWMS goose management unit, defined in the
Michigan Wildlife Conservation Order (WCO) Section 12.703, is approximately 8,411 acres, not counting the Restricted Areas.
WATEFOWL HUNT PROCEDURES:
(See WCO Sections 3.412, 12.703, and 13.6 for more details)
1. Term: Opening date depends on crop harvest. Contact the Muskegon SGA Headquarters for more information.
- The MCWMS goose management unit, as posted, shall be closed for the early September Canada goose season, Sept l-15.
- On Tuesday morning only hunts: Morning-only hunts are from opening of hunting hours until 2:00 p.m.
- On Saturday morning and afternoon hunts: Morning hunts are from opening of hunting hours until 12:00 noon.
Afternoon hunts are from 1:00 p.m. to closing of hunting hours.
- See the annual waterfowl digest or the hunting and trapping digest for opening/closing hunting times and other details.
- Youth Hunt(s): During a day designated and published by the area manager as "youth day(s)", hunting parties made up of at
least 1 youth (aged 10 to 16 years old) accompanied by 1 or 2 adults (parents, guardians, or other persons authorized by the parent or
guardian and who are 18 years of age or older), with appropriate licenses and stamps, shall be given first priority for local permits.
2. Requirements to Hunt: (a.) personal identification; (b.) valid Michigan small game or other appropriate hunting licenses as
required; (c.) State and Federal duck stamps, as required; and (d.) a local daily hunting permit issued by the DNR at the
Muskegon SGA Headquarters Office or by DNR staff at hunt headquarters near the intersection of Swanson & White roads.
3. Game: Ducks and geese only.
4. Permit Issuance: Parties, of 2-4 people per party, should be at the Muskegon SGA Headquarters at 5:30 a.m. local time for
a morning hunt and at 11:00 a.m. for an afternoon hunt, for a drawing to determine the order for each party to
pick hunting locations. After the initial drawing, vacant areas will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Single individuals will be allowed to hunt, after all parties have been assigned and if any locations are available.
5. Control: a. Access - (ingress and egress): Hunters will be admitted to the hunting areas by means of the most direct route to
parking areas near their assigned locations. Parking instructions will be provided during the drawing.
All other driving within the MCWMS area requires a special access permit from the MCWMS Office.
b. Limited Entry: Only hunters with official permits will be admitted or permitted to remain in the hunting area.
c. Limited Areas: Hunter numbers within each hunting zone or location are limited for safety reasons.
Firearms may not be discharged anywhere except from the assigned location (zone, area or post).
d. Parking: Parking areas will be assigned with permits.
e. Reporting: All hunters must report to the game area office (or designated check station) to return tags and report
all game taken and/or have game checked, within one hour following the end of the permitted hunt time.
RULES, REGULATIONS, AND PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES – in addition to the above information and procedures:
1. All hunting will be subject to applicable laws of the State of Michigan. No hunting outside of assigned areas or location.
2. Hunters and their permits, tags, and firearms will be subject to inspection by DNR or Muskegon County personnel.
3. Firearms shall be unloaded at all times except at the assigned hunting zone, blind or post.
4. All hunters will be limited to 25 shells each, with shot size no larger than BBB. Steel shot only must be used.
5. It is unlawful to use or possess any shot, whether loose or loaded in shotshells, of material other than those of
Federally approved non-toxic materials (specified in WCO section 3.411), except single projectile loads.
6. Use of dogs will be allowed.
7. No littering is permitted. No cans or bottles will be allowed on the area.
8. Persons damaging any Muskegon County property shall be liable for all damages and costs incurred.
9. Do not enter the “Restricted Area – Do Not Enter” portions of area (see map) without formal MCWMS Office permission.
10. Other Rules and Regulations may be posted in the area; look for additional signs or notices to ensure a safe hunt.
REGARDING SAFETY AND CONDITIONS: Each hunter shall be liable for any injury or death to persons or damage to property.
Muskegon County, MCWMS, and/or the DNR shall not be liable for the recklessness or carelessness of other hunters.
Every person shall use reasonable care for his/her own safety. This permit is granted for hunting purposes only.
Muskegon County and the DNR reserve rights to alter or amend rules and regulations at any time if circumstances so require
• CAUTION: Use care near all open water; some of these areas may contain deep water, depending on season and rainfall.
• BE A SAFE HUNTER - A safe hunter obeys laws governing hunting and boating, and is alert to any conditions
hazardous to the personal safety of the hunter and to others.
