As a member of the Heartland Cancer Research NCORP (see page 7), Illinois
CancerCare ranks second in overall accrual of patients into clinical studies,
according to the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology—ahead of such noted
names in cancer research as Dana-Farber, Ohio State, University of Chicago,
Mayo Clinic and Southeast Cancer Consortium.

At 75, Roger Nuhn of Glasford is a relative newlywed. When he and Bonnie married five
years ago, he joined a close-knit family—two daughters, five granddaughters and two
great-grandsons (and another great-grandchild on the way). They all rallied around him
when he started treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia in the winter of 2014.
So did his Illinois CancerCare family. Presented with the opportunity to participate in
a clinical trial, Roger debated it, then decided, “What have I got to lose?” The answer:
Nothing. He’s not only responding well to treatment—which he’s not sure he could have
afforded on his own—but he’s also recovered the energy to do the things he loves. “I
wouldn’t have been able to do anything without this treatment. Now, I feel like doing stuff
again.” That includes plans to head to Florida with Bonnie to escape the coming winter.

YOUR DOLLARS SUPPORT : Cutting-edge cancer treatments
offered in our patients’ hometowns. Through the NCI Community Oncology
Research Program (NCORP), Illinois CancerCare shares in $2.5 million of
annual funding for National Cancer Institute clinical trials. Patient costs for
trials exceed that amount, however, resulting in a significant budget shortfall.
The Foundation fills that gap—committing up to $400,000 per year for the
next four years to help ensure local patients receive the quality care they
deserve, close to home.

BEST MEDICINE
How would you expect a retired fighter pilot to battle lung cancer? Probably not by
donning tie-dyed T-shirts and knitting stocking caps for his care team—but that’s the
approach Dan Jacobs of Galesburg took. “People are going to look when you lose your hair,
so I might as well make them laugh.”
It hasn’t all been laughter for Dan, his wife Jean and their son Cory, but after undergoing
several rounds of chemotherapy, Dan’s tumor has shrunk and he’s entered a maintenance
program as part of a clinical trial. “It’s the best way to learn—to give back and help the
greater good. I know someone else did it for me, and my dad didn’t have this opportunity
when he faced cancer 30 years ago.”

YOUR DOLLARS SUPPORT : Studies and therapies that
help patients deal with the side effects of cancer treatment. Balance
problems caused by chemo-induced neuropathy can lead to falls, injuries
and reduced quality of life. In 2014, the Foundation awarded a grant of
$37,982 to the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPMR)
to study the effects of taxane chemotherapy on balance in breast cancer
patients. We also committed $20,000 for lymphedema treatment and
compression therapy, which help patients deal with tissue swelling and
fluid retention caused when lymph nodes are removed.

THE HEALING
STARTED IN MY
GARAGE
Like a lot of patients undergoing chemotherapy, Vickie Brewer of Morton worried about
losing her hair. So her friends at work threw her a hat party, and her daughter bought her a beautiful
wig. Then, her extended family—husband, daughters, parents, brothers and sisters-in-law—threw
one of their spur-of-the-moment “garage parties” to shave Vickie’s head. “It lightened things up, and
that really helped. I made up my mind I’m not going to give in to breast cancer.”
After her diagnosis in 2014, Vickie had a lumpectomy and then began chemotherapy. That resulted in
a side effect called neuropathy, a type of nerve damage that can cause numbness, tingling, pain and
muscle weakness. When her physician asked if she wanted to participate in a clinical trial for a new
neuropathy drug, Vickie didn’t hesitate. “I want to be part of proving that more drugs can work
for more people.”

A fall wedding, a new baby girl and a home on the family farm—Skyler
Krans of Bradford has all the motivation he needs to beat the gallbladder
cancer he’s been battling since 2012. Joining the fight are his parents, Dan
and Dianne, who travel with him to every treatment, and his fiancée, Chelsea,
who met him after his diagnosis. “I told her about what was happening to me,
and she still wanted to be with me. I asked her to marry me this Christmas.”
(Chelsea and Skyler welcomed baby Aria in April 2015.)
Skyler’s care team at Illinois CancerCare has been by his side, too, helping
him match the right treatment to his diagnosis. His physician encouraged him
to submit a piece of his tumor for genetic testing, which resulted in a 57-page
report detailing his various tumor markers. That information was then aligned
with available clinical trials. “It’s all about targeted therapy. If you’re going to
beat cancer, you need to know what you’re going after.”

IN THE FIGHT
As a children’s pastor for Compass Kids, Stacey Lux talks with children
about all kinds of issues. She didn’t know cancer would be one of them until she
was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. Now she dons funny hats and brightly
colored wigs as she shares her story with her young congregation—and she says
the support the kids give her in return is critical in her treatment.
At Illinois CancerCare’s clinic in Normal, where she’s undergoing chemotherapy after
a double mastectomy, Stacy says, “The nurses are wonderful. I feel pampered. I’m
getting over the hump and getting closer to the finish line.” And she has faith the
nausea-related clinical trial in which she’s participating will bring hope to someone
in the future. “I have a passion in my heart to use this experience to bring about
something good.”
YOUR DOLLARS SUPPORT : Assessment
tools that help women prevent breast cancer or diagnose it
sooner. In 2014, the Foundation awarded a grant of $57,181
to OSF Breast Center to develop a first-of-its-kind program in
our region. Using tablet computers, women answer a series
of questions about family history of breast cancer and other
risk data for analysis. Those identified as higher risk are
referred for assessment, counseling, personalized care plans
and possible genetic testing.

Over the past three years, Jody Scott of Morton has battled
cancer in multiple forms, but she’s never let it get her
down—not with husband Greg, daughter Devan and cats
Owen and Juno surrounding her with love and support. And
when times were tough around the holidays, volunteers
from the Foundation’s Trust in Hope program made her life
a bit easier. “I was just beside myself when they came and
brought a full Thanksgiving meal. They touched my soul.”
With recent scans indicating she’s cancer-free, Jody credits
family, faith and everyone at Illinois CancerCare with her
recovery. “These people are meant to be doing what they’re
doing. I love them all. I always say it’s like hugging angels.”

Barbara Shelby’s treatment for colon cancer ended seven years ago, but she
keeps a shoebox full of memories. Inside are notes, drawings and 12 special
cards—one for each of the floral arrangements delivered to the Peoria clinic
on her treatment days. Close friends (including Susan Riediger, right) sent
them anonymously to buoy her spirits.
Now Foundation donors, Barbara and her husband Bob know firsthand how
much patients rely on support from all angles. “When I was in treatment, I
would hear other people telling their stories, and I knew they were hurting.
When you’re diagnosed with cancer, you’re given a chance to fight. I want
to help pass on that chance to others.” The couple also want others to know
what a difference the ability to stay close to home during treatment makes.

Alli Turner and her husband Jake moved to Peoria from
Chicago to be near her father as he battled brain cancer. During
his treatment, Alli decided to give back to the organization that
was so supportive of her family. As a member of the Foundation’s
Young Leaders Board, she helps plan events like Golfin’ in the Wild
and build a legacy of giving for the future. Even her one-year-old
daughter Autumn “requested” donations to the Foundation in lieu of
gifts for her birthday. “This is one of those rare causes where you

After his sister succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2010, Orin

CELEBRATE A LIFE
Naramore and his family wanted to take an active role in fighting
the disease. They raced in the 2011 Purple Stride in Chicago,
raising $4,000 for PanCAN, but wanted to generate and use funds
locally. Two years later, the Theresa Tracy Trot was born. A four-mile
run and two-mile walk held in East Peoria’s Levee District, the event
has attracted more than 450 participants in each of its first two
years and raised more than $35,000 for the Foundation. (The 2015
race will be held November 7.)

Just as important, the Theresa Tracy Trot is helping Orin and his
friends and family deal with Theresa’s loss. “Through this event,
I get to celebrate my sister’s life on an almost daily basis. It’s
amazing how much better you’re able to cope when you’re around
people who know what you’re going through.”
