Their land was covered with trees and forests. Which is how the land got their name. (Eastern Woodlands). The climate in this region has freezing winters and hot summers. Environment is, the surroundings or conditions in were a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. The Eastern woodlands is a very green and swampy place with little creatures all around. • • • • • Culture is the way of life for an entire society. The wigwam ,or green corn festival is all at once a celebration of thanks , a symbol of tribal survival and the chance to be connected to other tribal members , past and present. It is held at the end of the summer. They covered the frame with mats made from bark from birch trees. Wigwams are small houses ,usually 8-10 feet tall. The frame can be shaped like a dome, cone and rectangle. • • • • • • They grew crops like maize, squash and beans. The men hunted turkey, deer and small game. They also gathered berries, and roots and nuts. They went fishing on the coast. People gathered the stalks in august and September, dried them, and then shook them to collect seeds, which are the rich in protein. They ate soup, cornbread and stew. The Mohegan’s used moose and deer skin • The women wore wraparound skirts. • The men and teenage boys wore cloths. Both the skirt and the cloth were ornamented sometimes elaborately, with painted designs in a variety of colors. • Leggings of moose or deer skin were worn by both genders, and moccasins of the same material protected the feet when necessary. Additional pieces of clothing were added for warmth or protection. • • • www.moheganlanguages.org www.moheganindians.wee bly.org • www.mohegan.nsn.US • History Alive Book • •
