The UAE’s National Environment Day
is by now a well - established event
that serves to focus the attention of

the

and the general public on matters of
environmental concern.
The UAE leadership has always been
showing unwavering commitment to
environment preservation. The Founder
of the Nation Late President Sheikh
Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan accentuated
more than once that environment is “a
dear part of our heritage, civilization and
future”. Ecologists always cite soundbites
circulated by indigenous peoples around

Strategy Execution Model
A model of the strategy execution process was then presented in
which the implementation was broken into four phases: strategy
development – planning – execution – review. Each of these
was discussed in turn with analysis of what was required to be
successful in each phase.
This year, the guest speaker was Mr. Gavin Ferdinando from BP
who gave a talk of the practical experience gained in implementing
strategies. He discussed two separate examples, on safety
culture and integrity management, outlining the steps taken and
key success factors behind successful execution in each case.

Practical ADMA-OPCO Examples
The conference then returned to practical ADMA-OPCO
examples with presentations on Sarb, Umn Lulu, Nasr and the
+100 MBD programme followed by current strategies on people
development and drilling.
The above presentations were interspersed with a management
exercise and syndicates focusing on the key factors in strategy
execution and where there is a scope for ADMA-OPCO to make
further progress. Polling was used at various stages to gain
delegate opinions of key issues.
Following the conference, an analysis of the presentations,
debates, syndicates and polls will take place. Potential actions will
be identified and these will be discussed by Senior Management

Bags
The UAE Government is working towards having the
use of plastic bags eliminated in the near future.
The initiative came in synchronization with the
celebrations marking the UAE Environment Day on
February 4th.
The task of eliminating plastic bags will be achieved in
phases, according to Dr. Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahd, the
Minister of Environment and Water.
“By 2013, all plastic bags used in the country will
be biodegradable. A three-year programme was
launched in October 2009 to make sure all plastic
bag manufacturers comply with this specification,” he
added.
Furthermore, new measures to reduce the use of
plastic bags will be announced until the country
becomes completely free of them, he noted.
Simultaneously, awareness campaigns to educate the
public about the harmful impact of plastic bags on the
environment will be undertaken to curb usage.
However, phasing out plastic bags will be challenging
as a study by the ministry showed a 15 per cent jump
in its use annually from 2006 to 2008.
Urging residents to minimise consumption, the
minister said: “Changing behaviour of the public is
the key to achieving results, and this is directly linked
to awareness.”
He called on the public to use reusable shopping
bags as much as possible.
